SouthernJet
OK, we have been teased before. But maybe the Football Gods have been playing a joke on us for years and its time for them to pay us back for all the suffering. Why else would we see the Karma and DejaVu associated with the current state of affairs. Our last scene of Glory, SuperBowl III saw a pudgy little Defensive coach guy patrolling our sideline. Buddy Ryan. Rex's Dad. Buddy should have been our next head coach if it werent for the only stain on Weebs resume. Weeb handed the reins over to his idiotic son-in-law Charley Winner. Buddy walked. Now, we fast forward past many many years of heartbreak, sorrow and kicked in TV screens to today, 40 years later!! We have aligned the Football God's intent by having Ryan back in the Jets fold. Buddy is back to see his son, Rex, deliver on what Buddy had envisioned so many years ago as our Defensive Coach. Balls to the walls Defense, smart Offense, field position and being a coach who the players will walk through Hell in a Gasoline Suit for. 2009 will be our year of implementation of kick-ass football. There will be bumps for sure in 2009 as we grow a new playbook and a new QB. Playoffs are a possibility in 2009, but from 2010 on, I know there will be a long string of consecutive Playoff appearances for us. Its finally happened fellow Jets fans, the Question of Balance in the Jets football sphere has been fixed. Storm clouds are forming, but the future is BRIGHT!!!!!!! DoubleDown
I like the team we are building. Tannenbaum has done an excellent job since taking over in 2006, and all of the pieces are starting to fall into place. We have a very talented group of young players who make up the core of the team...Sanchez, Cotchery, Leon, Keller, Dbrick, Mangold, Harris, Pace, Scott, Revis, Rhodes. Hopefully Rex can take us to the next level and bring us a championship. I like his fire so far, but I hope it translates well into managing the team on the football field. I'm worried he will be overly emotional and let it affect his decisions during the game. Plenty of elite defensive coordinators have gone on to flop as head coaches. Let's hope for the best. I like your optimism. This could be the best team we have fielded in a very long time, and I'm excited to see what type of run we can put together in the next few years. I think Gholston is the big X factor. If he flops, it is a huge mistake for Mr. T in an otherwise impressive start as a GM. I think the Jets will be very good even if Gholston does not come on, but if he does, he can be the difference in a good aggressive defense and one that dominates and controls Brady. Forget the Dolphins and the dopey Bills. Make no mistake, to go far, the Jets have to beat the Pats. And to beat the Pats, you have to limit Brady like the Giants did. But ... if he does succeed, he could put them over the top to be able to beat the Pats.

Yes, we certainly can't "expect" big things from Gholston based upon what he has shown so far. Don't be surprised if Marques Murrell becomes our key situational pass rusher. I liked this guy last summer and Rex had nice things to say about him after yesterday's practice.

Shaun Ellis ring a bell? I am so sick of Jets fans dissing this guy. If you don't think Shaun Ellis is any good, you don't know what the **** you are talking about and should take a few minutes to learn the game rather than being obsessed with fantasy stats. He is not flashy and does not pile up a ton of sacks, so people overlook him. But he is solid against the run, does not slow down in the 4th qtr, and gets as much pressure on the QB as you should expect from a 3-4 DE. And I don't think he has slowed down at all. slats
sort of what I was saying.. wont break us, but would be GREAT gravy for us if he comes thru.,. I personally am not counting on him at all and expect the Jets to pick up a June 1st veteran salary cap casualty cut from another team to fill this hole. With 2010 currently being uncapped, there were no June 1 cuts this year. If Rex needs bodies, he'll be sifting thru players who get cut from other training camps. Not to mention that players like Gholston, Pace, Thomas will be playing with their hand in the dirt much of the time. In this system, there is not much separating the DL from the LB's...you really have to consider the whole front 7 as a whole because of the movement and shuffling around. This is true. To beat the Pats, you have to have a killer pass rush. That's the blue print the Giants gave the NFL; it's just not that easy to follow. Gholston was brought in to be the guy who puts the Jets over the top in that department. If he doesn't, the Jets are only going to go so far until they find someone who will. They can be good enough to be a playoff caliber defense without him breaking thru, but not a championship defense. Not this year. And this is why I hate trading away so many draft picks (and why Shonn Greene needs to be Jim Brown!), because the Jets don't have a chance for any diamonds in the rough without being able to bring in some second day guys. Tannenbaum's drafting style makes them more dependent on Gholston - and it's that tendency to trade up that doesn't allow Tannenbaum the leeway to have the top 10 whiffs that you may be able to tolerate from a GM capable of collecting draft picks. I like what we've put together, but it all comes down to Sanchez. If he's a good QB, doesn't need to be a superstar, but good QB, then we're going to be a strong, competitive team. We still need another WR though. That scares me.

Irish Jet
Good post. I like what we've put together, but it all comes down to Sanchez. If he's a good QB, doesn't need to be a superstar, but good QB, then we're going to be a strong, competitive team. We still need another WR though. That scares me. Exactly why I make comparisons to the 2008 Ravens. Sanchez just has be a Joe Flacco type QB, where he just doesn't kill the team. I think we'll win games in spite of his play a few times in '09 but that's to be expected with a rookie QB. What Sanchez doesn't have though is a Derrick Mason at WR and you're right in saying that's a problem. The offense is going to be reliant on the running game, that's a given and teams will know that. Sanchez however will have to take advantage of teams selling out to stop the run, like Flacco did. I'd genuinely be shocked if we don't lead the league in rushing attempts this season. With the addition of Greene has the potential to be truly dominant. If we can keep games close, I think Greene can come in late in the game and take over. The defense is going to be good, potentially great if our edge rushers can really step up. I've been watching a lot of Baltimore Ravens games and his defensive looks and schemes are unbeleivable. They were a huge factor in the success of that defense, it wasn't all talent. With the core of players we have here - Jenkins, Ellis, Scott, Pace, Revis, Rhodes, Leonhard etc. it can be at that level IMO.
