What pieces are we missing?

What pieces is this team missing that we would need to get a championship? IMO we are just a few players away but then again, so are most other teams!

Anyways my thoughts are:

1. Big time WR

2. Solid blocking TE

3. Upgrade at either K or P. An odd choice maybe but I think special teams is of primary importance right now given the makeup of this team.

4. Pass-rushing monster. My hope is that VG develops into this, which would really free us up next year in terms of the draft..

I'm optimistic about Sanchez' future, but you'd have to put QB on this list, too - at least until he proves he was worth the investment.

the most glaringly obvious puzzle piece would be WR, but DMaynard and 124's camp reports have me re-thinking about the effect that Henry Ellard seems to be having on our corps-I'm trying to think positive here with my green goggles on....

I agree that these are the question marks along with QB as Slats said.

I am optimistic about Sanchez and to some degree, the young WRs. I have no problem with Feely. Punter is a big problem. Blocking TE is a concern. And Gholston is a huge question mark, although I do think we will have a pretty good rush by committee.

Good post.

SFJ, besides having Ellard here and what I saw in practice, I am also reading into the fact that the Jets did not seem all that upset with Coles leaving and not biting on the many experienced WRs that have been "available" (TO, Harrison, Holt, Edwards, Ocho, etc.).

I also think Stuckey showed enough in limited time last year to easily project to a decent starter.

Still, don't uncross the fingers just yet. ;)

Hey D, if Gholston turns out to be a bust then so be it bro....1/2 of the high DP's turn out to be meh anyway-so we move on. There's no shame as far as I can see. If he makes it then good if not, then we cut his ass and give it to some guy who wants it more-like a Murrel or the kid from Rutgers. I'd rather NOT have a big old reminder of an Eff-up that the cameras can focus on every week standing around on the sidelines anyway ya know?

I like Murrell. He could surprise.

I'd love to see a Wallace Wright, David Clowney, Marcus Henry or even Brad Smith turn into something-the Jets SEEM to be confident in who we have here...but then again how many times have we heard stuff like that..." Lamont Jordan will get 10 carries a game next season" and then poof he's gone

True. Like I said, I think we can count on Stuckey, so you would think (hope) that at least one of the other 4 young receivers will step up. Volume helps. :D

did you say he was lining up in the slot and Smith was opposite Cotch?

I was watching some old tape of the Jets and ran across this. Jets had so many opportunities in this game. This gets me depressed everytime I see it, but look how good Wayne Chrebet was. That's the type of player we need.

We are missing:

1. A WR to start opposite Jerricho Cotchery

2. Tight End Depth/Blocking Tight End

3. Inside Linebacker Depth

Time to hope the players on the roster we have right now can step up and make these holes disappear.

Ellard would have to become David (Bukalo) Blaine or David Copperfield to turn our WRs into studs.

Ellard is high on Wallace Wright, saying he believes that Wright is ready to step out of his Special Teams shadow and be a contributer on the offensive side of the ball. Said Brad Smith is still learning the position, this is going to be his FOURTH year in the league. I can honestly say I do not want Brad Smith back on this team in 2010. No thank you.

From what I read today, Ellard has some high hopes for Clowney and Wright.

Pass Rushers are a bit of a problem but I believe there is enough talent to utilize Ryan's/Pettine's aggresive schemes to get to QB's. Guys like Pace, Harris and even Rhodes are all very effective when they're asked to blitz, I think they'll get a lot more opportunities this season. Gholston is obviously a wildcard, hopefully he can step up, although I wouldn't hold my breath over that.

The most obvious weakness on this team like you said is at WR. Although I've said that I don't think it's going to be a huge problem simply because we're not exactly looking for a lights out passing game. Would it help a young QB? No doubt, but not to the extent that our offensive line and running game will IMO. We're not going to be passing it very often, guys like Cotchery and Keller (And hopefully another guy will step up) are adequate targets for what we'll be trying to do offensively IMO.

I'd say something similar for the QB, It has be considered a weakness until one of the guys has proven himself. I'd say it'll be Sanchez getting the nod and to be honest I think he'll be alright, he wont be asked to do too much. Play action should be his best friend this season.

As for the other weaknesses you pointed out? I think Feely was fine last season, not ptoblem there. We never seem to have a good punter, but our coverage unit tends to make up for that. I'm happy enough with Franks as a blocking TE if he's healthy.

My main concern this season is with depth. In a lot of areas one injury could kill us.

1. Do not forget about Bart Scott. When asked to rush the passer, he can do it and do it effectively. As an OLB in 2006 he recorded 9.5 sacks.

2. I honestly think our primary blocking TE in 2009 may just be Andrew Davie or Jack Simmons, one of the UDFA's. They both are looking good, I'm glad we have them.

1. Oh sure, I was more talking about the guys who suffered under Mangini. Even Jim Leonhard flies to the football and would be pretty useful in that area. (I've been watching a lot of Baltimore games from last season and this guy is exciting).

2. I don't know anything about either but it'd be great if one of them could step up. Good to hear they're looking good. It'd also be great if Keller could improve his blocking, something he's said he's working on.

Dustin is simply the man. He looked a little bit more comfortable on the L.O.S. to me, but I didn't have the greatest view on him and was honestly concentrating more on the Quarterbacks and Receivers. I love Dustin, I think he's going to continue to improve and be a special player for us. He is going to be our #2 receiver, basically.

I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up leading the team in recieving yardage. He'll be a great target for whoever is at QB.

I don't know, now that I have his authentic jersey, he'll probably start to suck with my luck.

But hopefully not... TJ did great last year after I got his...

Nah, Keller's going to be a beast next season. He was epic in that Pats game last season.

I was thinking about getting a Keller jersey, I'm getting one this year but I dunno who.

It's between:

Keller

Mangold

Revis

Sanchez

Leon (Needs to get a new deal)

Mangold -- Don't get Mangold unless you're like, well, my size. :) -- I'm surprised I don't have his jersey yet, I think that will be my next one.

Revis -- No. ;)

Leon -- Wait for a new deal before considering him.

I really say go with Sanchez. You are a Sanchez guy and he is going to be on this team, even if he blows, for at least 3 years. I'd buy a Sanchez if I didn't have a thing about wearing single digit numbered jerseys. I don't know why, but I can't wear a jersey if its numbered 1-9. I mean, yes, I had a Nugent jersey, but I never wore it and I didn't buy it, it was a gift. I bougt a Favre last year for $4 at work (long story on how I got at that price -- in AUGUST!) and wore it to one game... but after that I was just like, nah. Just frame it if he does well. So much for that. Lol.

Oh I'm big enough. Not O-line big but I could change that.:D

I probably will go with Sanchez, but he's not a sure thing in terms of performance. For example I doubt 49er fans who bought Alex Smith jerseys look too smart right now. LOL

Shonn Greene is another guy I'd consider. He's gonna be a beast.
