Rural Mich. counties turn failing roads to gravel

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Some Michigan counties have turned a few once-paved rural roads back to gravel to save money.

More than 20 of the state's 83 counties have reverted deteriorating paved roads to gravel in the last few years, according to the County Road Association of Michigan. The counties are struggling with their budgets because tax revenues have declined in the lingering recession.

Montcalm County converted nearly 10 miles of primary road to gravel this spring.

The county estimates it takes about $10,000 to grind up a mile of pavement and put down gravel. It takes more than $100,000 to repave a mile of road.

Reverting to gravel has happened in a few other states but it is most typical in Michigan. At least 50 miles have been reverted in the state in the past three years

Because every president turned the country around within 6 months.

I didn't just mean this one I meant all of them, America is killing itself. We need to change the way big business and the govt work. They take way to much money for dumb ****. It cost to much for someone to run a business here.

No worries you got it.

First thing we need to do is make gambling, prostitution and weed legal. Then get a federal run education system where every school has the same test and books and a better discipline system (no more kicking unruly students out of school), then figure out a way for people to own businesses without having to pay 50%+ of their money in taxes and licenses as well as figuring out how to make it cheaper for farmers to make a living. Then work on getting a better fuel source and all the environment crap.

Where do you want to start?

You already got my vote on this one.

The rest of that sh*t makes you sound like a commie.

If you took stuff for all types of govt and made a new one it would work better. Our system doesn't work we need to tweak it.

And what's wrong with being a commie? I've had really good sex with commies, old Easten Block girls are the best. :hump:

Farmers are screwed anyways. Its not the government, its their mindset. They refuse to run themselves like a business, and adjust the way they operate to gain a competitive advantage, and it makes all of them fail.

Henry Ford said it best...

"I believe that the average farmer puts to a really useful purpose only about 5%. of the energy he expends.... Not only is everything done by hand, but seldom is a thought given to a logical arrangement. A farmer doing his chores will walk up and down a rickety ladder a dozen times. He will carry water for years instead of putting in a few lengths of pipe. His whole idea, when there is extra work to do, is to hire extra men. He thinks of putting money into improvements as an expense.... It is waste motion— waste effort— that makes farm prices high and profits low."

***Forgot to quote Mick on this in his presidential platform of saving the farmers

My cost cutting ways:

I get a bunch of free food from brokers... I dont have to buy tea, pancake mix, microwave thai food, mustard, and lots of other stuff

I buy off the reduced rack.

I no longer get hookers, I just look at porn online.

I steal music online.

I didnt buy PSL's.

I make my girlfriend pay for dinner... or go to her parents house for dinner.

I dont pay $55 for exclusive content.

I siphon gas from my neighbors cars.

I dont shower.

I dont brush my teeth.

I dont use deodorant.

I take backroads instead of the Mass Pike.

When I grocery shop I stock up on non-perishables when they are on sale. I bought a second freezer for buys on frozen foods and to freeze fresh meats that are on sale. It paid for itself in months. You would be surprised how much stuff that you normally buy that go on ridiculous sales every couple of weeks/months.

I changed the thermostats to digital programmable ones. Save about 20 bucks a month since then.

I sign up for coupons for diapers and baby formula using multiple e-mail addresses. I have about 100 bucks of formula and diaper coupons ready to go.

very good point

"vampire energy" is a huge waste. Even when they are turned off, they suck energy

Easiest way to deal with that is plug as many things that use vampire energy as you can into one circuit then just turn off the breaker. You should be able to turn off almost everything plugged in with two or three breakers unless you live in a big ass house.

I have a coffee maker with a timer, so I decided to set it up before bed and have it ready in the AM

I was spending like $3 a day at DD, thats about $600 a year right there

Bingo!

I was doing the same thing only at Caribou Coffee (like Starbucks but better IMO)

1. I rarely eat out anymore.

2. Pack a lunch - I not only can eat healtheir, but I save time and gas by not driving someplace to buy lunch.

3. I dont have cable/direct tv. I would only watch it 8 - 10 hours a week and I really need to read more anyway. And, I got the digital converter to work.;)

4. I have a garden that will begin to produce here shortly, but in the mean time I buy vegatables and fruits at the farmers market.

5. I'm not buying a new truck anytime soon until the automakers get their act together and build a fuel efficient diesel engine for a light truck. The Europeans have been driving diesels for ages beacause they get more MPG, theyre powerful and petrol is so expensive over there.
