DoubleDown
Path may clearing for Burress to become a Jet June 15, 2009 7:11 AM Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Graham Free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress is being marketed around the NFL as completely available for every game this season. The New York Jets are said to be listening. Burress' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Fox affiliate WSVN in Miami he's optimistic the former New York Giants star "will be able to play unobstructed" this year. The expectation from Burress' support team is that he won't stand trial for felony gun charges until after the season and that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will wait that long to issue any suspension. "We are hopeful that the commissioner will not suspend Plax," Rosenhaus said Sunday night. "He's already been suspended by the Giants last year, five games. Since there hasn't been a resolution in the case, there's really no reason to suspend him." Burress accidentally shot himself with a Glock semiautomatic pistol at a Manhattan nightclub in November. He was arraigned on counts of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded gun and an unlicensed weapon. There's a mandatory minimum sentence of
124
This would be a dream come true for me. I wanted the Jets to draft him in 2000 when we had 4 selections and we didn't use 1 of them on him, unfortunately. By far my favorite Offensive player in the NFL to watch and to see him in Jet green would be amazing. He would do wonders for either Sanchez or Clemens. I'd have that jersey ordered so fast, the Jets wouldn't be able to put one out on their website before I got to it.

Irish Jet
I don't believe Drew for one second. IMO he's still going to jail. Would love for this to happen though regardless. Even if he does miss 4 games through suspension (Something he's getting if he avoids jail, again I don't believe Rosenhaus) he'd still be a great signing beyond that, he'd help Sanchez to a great extent. Teams have to give Burress some serious attention, he has that deep ball threat. Hence, he would open up all sorts of space for our running game and for Cotchery and Keller. He would upgrade every aspect of the offense with his presence alone. I'd sign him anyway, just ensure we have him regardless. I'd get him right now before any desicion is made simply because if he is escaping jail time then we're going to find a lot more teams interested. I don't think he will ultimately miss jail time, but it seems like his trial will be postponed until next year. That gives him a full season this year, and it's possible that the NFL will not suspend Burress until the conclusion of the trial. There has been speculation that Burress will only receive a few months of jail time which he could complete during the offseason. Also, the Giants have already suspended him for 5 games due to this incident so the NFL may not see a need to issue a long suspension on top of it. BroadwayJ667
unlikely he'll be suspended by Goodell for now. He's a first time offender, and Goodell goes after repeat offenders. And he hasn't been convicted of anything yet. so if the Jets get him, it'll probably be a whole season, and hopefully he'll be motivated with his impending doom and spite towards the other NY team

SoFlaJets
it makes a lot of sense for Buress to BE a Jet. Remember the Johnson family is VERY VERY VERY influential in NYC and Woody could easily call in some political favors to help the guy get a break. Look, as stupid as it was for the guy to shoot HIMSELF now, NOT point the gun at somebody else and fire, they may look at this with some favoribility(sic) for him. Also, I read somewhere this past week that he would like to "stick it to his former team" by signing with the Jets. One more point; we already have one Patriots killer at receiver in Cotchery and Buress would present them with twice the problems outside-we need to get this done SIGN THIS BEAST
Ghost
The signing of Plax will most definitely put us on the top. I know he'll probably get slapped with a 4-game suspension, but I don't care. We need to sign this animal...
SoFlaJets
Plax watch begins... By Ronnie Shumake Today is a huge day for the New York Jets. It is the day they find out what will happen regarding the legal issues surrounding Plaxico Burress. If he can avoid a jail sentence, I fully expect to see him in Green and White. Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan have tried to downplay any interest, but it is painstakingly obvious that this is the player the team needs to push the offense over the top. With Laverneus Coles gone, the team needs another veteran to keep defenses honest. Regardless of who is the starting QB this year, a proven big threat receiver is a security blanket for ANY NFL QB, let alone a rookie or one with half a season's experience starting. I am a huge supporter of the current core of wideouts, but there is no denying the way that this guy changes the game. He forces defenses into double coverage. With his height and wingspan, he catches anything thrown within a ten foot area of him. He has proven to be a force on offense that will free up your tight end and running back to make more plays. There may be a surprise superstar in the making in guys like Brad Smith, Wallace Wright, Marcus Henry, Chanci Stuckey or David Clowney, but it is more likely to take another year for those guys to blossom and reach full potential. This team is built to win now and Plax will give them the best chance to win now. Many players have said that they would welcome him with open arms and I think he would even help the younger receivers develop faster with his experience. There has been talk about Anquaan Boldin, Braylon Edwards and even Brandon Marshall, but I am not confident if either of the first two can handle the NY media spotlight. I would love Marshall as he is another force and seems to have the most upside as a player, but he is an "alleged" abuser of women. Even if it's not true, to have such allegations alone speaks volumes about the character of a man. I really didn't see anything solid in his addressing the allegations to give me any faith in him being a stand up team player. He seems like more problems are lurking around the next corner, the one after that and the one after that. We already know Plax can handle the spotlight here, the question is whether or not he would cause more injury to himself in some other moronic fashion. He just needs to leave the guns in Miami where they are registered and focus more on playing football and not the clubs. I suspect that with guys like Bart Scott, Thomas Jones, Jerrico Cotchery, Kerry Rhodes, Kris Jenkins and even the rookie Mark Sanchez as teammates and also being fortunate enough to get a second chance that he would learn from his mistake and move forward in a different direction. Scott would talk too much trash and embarass him daily in practice for shooting himself in the leg in the first place, Jones would keep him working out, Cotchery would inspire him to be more humble, Jenkins would threaten to bear hug him if he did anything to jeopordize a run for the title, finally, Rhodes and Sanchez would be too busy getting him into modelling to be out clubbin like he's Tupac and Suge Knight. I can picture him pulling the NEW Marcus Henry and working out all day and then going home to be with the family. There is great talent on the team and I like the attitude of the core of receivers. The thing is, this is a team built to win it all now. They have some key cornerstone players to build a franchise around. But certain key skill players have a small window of time to get it done. There was a chemistry that the team had that was disrupted last year. Players have already gone out to say they would welcome Plax so I don't see him having a negative effect here no matter how much mainstream media tries to imply that. If they could go out and dump cerebral Chad last year for Favre, they need to go get Plax tomorrow as soon as the verdict comes out that he will get off easy (which I suspect will happen). You don't keep giving someone delays in the trial to throw the book at them here in NYC.

Klecko73isGod
Plax has a great history with young QBs. In '04 he quickly became Rothliesberger's favorite target and then in '05 he thrived with an inexperienced Eli. Sanchez to Burress could be fun to watch. Stonehands
Count me as one that would not be upset if Plax went elsewhere. Tom Coughlin is a no nonsense coach and by all reports he couldn't get Plax to show up on time to meetings or for practices. He also seems to miss a lot of time with various injuries. I don't want to be beholden to having a top player that doesn't always come to play.

While you say the well to do may "usurp" the law, let us not forget that Plax ain't hurtin, and many of us regular Joes want to see those well-to-do to face the same music we would have to. Like I said, I want him on the team, and for example I wouldn't want Vick on this team but Burress is ok, because the difference between torturing animals for your enjoyment and shooting yourself in the leg is a gaping one. If there are any problems I have with Burress is his lack of work ethic, but he still shows up on Sundays. IMO this ordeal might work out to our advantage if we get him because perhaps now he will be a good soldier from now on and work hard and not be such a blatant schmuck. I don't want to be beholden to having a top player that doesn't always come to play. Idk about that one. The way all of the players look up to Ryan leads me to believe that there will not be a big problem with it. Bart Scott will shut him up if he starts acting out. And if not, it'll probably only be a one year deal since the jail time is unknown. I would take TO for one year cause his cancer doesn't really spread until at earliest year two. So we take a chance, have him fall in line, and miss him when he goes to jail, or he continues to be a turd and we kiss his ass goodbye when he goes to the slammer. Either way, having a dominating threat like that, even if he doesn't catch anything, will garner double coverage a lot of the time, leaving us with favorable match-ups for Cotchery, Keller, and our number 3 (Wright? Stuckey?) I think this would be a no lose situation for the jets. Unless of course he goes clubbing with Leon Washington and accidentally shoots him too.
