New York Jets seem to have cooled on ex-Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress - Hutch

Although the agent for wide receiver Plaxico Burress said he hopes to land his client a job in the NFL before the start of training camps in light of his felony gun possession case being adjourned Monday morning until Sept. 23, it appears the Jets' interest in Burress has cooled.

I'm hearing that the Jets feel that their collective group of wide receivers are good enough to get the job done. Besides, it's still only June and the organization will keep its options open at the wide receiver position. Even so, it seems as though they don't feel that the bad-boy Burress is the answer despite his immense talent.

According to reports, the Jets, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have shown interest in Burress.

"Consistent with our philosophy, we will continue to do our due diligence with any and all free agents that are available now and in the future," the Jets said in a statement Monday afternoon.

The week before the draft, the Jets contacted the agent Drew Rosenhaus to inquire about Burress' legal status but the club hasn't spoken with Rosenhaus since that conversation.

Last week, the Jets went into minicamp hoping one of their young wide receivers would step up and they emerged from the three-day camp encouraged, I'm told.

Quarterback-turned-wide receiver Brad Smith and special teams standout Wallace Wright have the organization excited and the Jets remain upbeat about speedster David Clowney, who was inconsistent during the camp. Smith was especially impressive and receivers coach Henry Ellard thinks he can be special.

Simply put, the trio of Smith, Wright and Clowney along with steady veteran Jerricho Cotchery and underrated slot receiver Chansi Stuckey has apparently instilled enough confidence in the organization heading into training camp that it feels it doesn't have to make a move on Burress.

This writer has zero quotes from the Jets or anyone from the Jets. He probably read the article in which the Jets receivers coach, Henry Ellard, said that he was confident we could win with what he had and then this moronic journalist just wrote this piece of crap up. Unbelieveable.

The Jets arn't stupid. We will pursue Plaxico if it is set up so he can play the 2009 season.

Good point. I really wouldn't be concerned about this "report". The Jets have shown repeatedly that they will do whatever it takes to land their man.

The Jets, once considered a potential suitor for the talented, but troubled Plaxico Burress, no longer are as interested as they once were, according to an NFL source.

That is a rather surprising change for the receiver-needy Jets, who have been linked to Burress since a pre-draft phone call to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Could this be posturing? Perhaps. From what I hear, their interest in Burress isn't completely dead. "Cooled" is the word I've heard. As long as there's a pulse anything can happen, but right now the Jets apparently have put it on the backburner. Perhaps the Jets aren't willing to wait for Burress to emerge from his legal obstacle course.

I'm not buying the notion they're content with the current receiving corps. They need a No. 1 receiver, a big target to complement Jerricho Cotchery. Rex Ryan has gushed about the likes of Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey and Wallace Wright, but, remember, this is the same coach who spoke highly of Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff ... then went out and made a huge trade for Mark Sanchez.

So, for now, the Jets are out of the Plaxico mix - or perhaps "on the periphery" is a better way of putting it. But have they checked out for good? I doubt it.

This means the Jets will sign him.

The Jets will come out and say they like Plax after they sign Plax.

How many times does the FO have to say they love a player(s) on their team and then find his replacement before the media learns not to post these "Jets have cooled on X" stories?

Remember how Tanny loved the QB competition between Chad and Clemens? Clemens and Ratliff?

They're not going to say anything that will disparage who they have. They'll just evidence such by signing or trading for their replacement.

+1

Another good realization. You can't believe anyone's word in sports. No one.

It would be nice if the uniform colors in this picture were reversed.

I'll never forget Burress' stiff arm of Dyson and him walking the last 15 yards down the sideline. Embarassing. Thats what Burress does:

Helps young QB's succeed and embarasses Cornerbacks.

PUSH HIM OUT OF BOUNDS YOU STUPID ****ING DICK!

*My reaction to that photo

he couldn't get close enough to him IJ, Burress' big arms held him at bay-like trying to hit a boxer with a 6 inch reach advantage and a mean assed jab

Just our luck.

I'm guessing that Burress would recommend a deal similar to T.O.'s 1 year, $6.5 million.

I agree with you on this one Joe-get Burress and we contend-without him and we're pretty much in the SOS, middle of the pack, maybe sneak in to the playoffs as a wildcard and then out after the inevitable road loss-I'm so sick of that

SMC is correct, Thank God.
