The Jets announced Monday that they claimed guard Mike Fladell off waivers from the Giants. The 6-7, 334-pound Fladell was signed to the Giants practice squad last December as an undrafted rookie free agent. The Giants waived the Rutgers product last week (June 24).

Fladell, a two-year starter at Rutgers, played left guard for the Scarlet Knights from 2003-07.

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter at left guard who also saw action with the first team as a sophomore.

POSITIVES: Well-sized, competitive blocker who.s at his best in a small area. Blocks with good lean, stays square, and anchors at the point. Moves defenders off the ball, plays with a nasty attitude, and works to finish blocks. Smart, cognizant, and works well with teammates. Uses all his assets to their maximum.

NEGATIVES: Marginal athlete who is not light on his feet or effective in motion. Lacks top footwork and the ability to slide laterally. Does a bit of arm wrestling.

ANALYSIS: Fladell is a hard-working, intelligent blocker who could play in a system that limits his responsibilities in space.

The Giants don't make too many mistakes on assessing OL talent. My guess is that this guy is a pro wrestler or a bouncer by September.

That's all true, but it's a positive, not a negative. The Giants have a good line and they aren't all first round picks and high level FAs. The fact they kept this guy around all last year means there is something there. Odds are against him rising above practice squad level, but it's not like they got the guy from the Raiders or Lions practice squad.

Can we please stop signing people from Rutgers?

This entire state has gone nuts with their mediocre play, at best, against any collegiate team that is worth anything.

There is a pattern to how Woody/Tanny operates. The have a preference for players who will sell tickets, get the Jets in the news, boost TV ratings etc.

I am not saying they will purposefully go out and sign a player they don't think will help the team. But if other things are equal or undeterminable they will always choose to go for what will draw interest.

Questionable if Favre was a wise aquistion from a football stance. Brilliant from a gettign the Jets in the paper/selling PSL perspective.

Sanchez may or may not be the future of the Jets. But unquestionable that the trade and the draft was outstanding from PR persepective.

Ryan may or may not have been the best choice for coach of all the avialable coaches. Unquestionable that his mouth is more likely to result in the Jets get the lead on sport center than any other option.

Rutgers players whether they can play at the NFL level or not, will draw local college football fans to the Jets.
