gg
whatever you think of them.. when they die.. there is an overwhelming outpouring of emotion these are the ones i can think about in my lifetime Elvis John Lennon Princess Di and now Michael Jackson. who do you think could be next. All of these "icons" died young and/or tragically. I am not wishing anyone death.. but i am wodering who could die young that would produce this type of reaction? is there anyone? Michael Jordan? Tiger? what do you guys think?
JohnnyHector
Not necessarily icons to me, but a few off the top of my head: Kurt Cobain Notorious BIG Tupac Everyone else in Blackout's deceased rappers thread (though if nobody heard of them, they can't really be icons I suppose). I am not sure any of those deaths produced the overwhelming response for days and days like the others have.. but i guess i didnt make myself clear, i was thinking who could die now and produce similar responses.. not who already was dead. Now? I don't know but if we are doing experiment I could come up with a list of people I'd like to see go and hope for the best. We can start with the jonas sisters. JohnnyHector
I am not sure any of those deaths produced the overwhelming response for days and days like the others have.. It obviously depends on your perspective, age, and musical taste. I remember the response for Kurt Cobain being pretty overwhelming, but for you, I doubt you or your peers were avid Nirvana fans (though I could be mistaken). but i guess i didnt make myself clear, i was thinking who could die now and produce similar responses.. not who already was dead. It's tough to say, but anyone who is already considered to be, or is on the verge of becoming an all-time great in music, movie, television, or sports that dies suddenly will have a similar impact. Ok.. i dont think i am getting my point across.. lol when elvis died he was in his 40's yet he had become part of the culture like no one had seen before . when John Lennon died, he had been a member of one of the top groups ever. when Princess Di died she was the peoples princess and we watched her grow up from a magical fairy tale story to a tragic life now Michael.. from the jackson 5, to thriller, to wacko..to selling out 50 shows in the UK i dont think the Jonas Brothers are there yet. BUT i could be wrong. Do people pilgrimage every year in droves to the place where Cobain killed himself? i dont know .. if that is the case, then i think he did fall into the category. Arsis
It depends on if it is a slow news week or not. Or if there is something serious going on that they want to drown out. Michael Jackson is only such a big deal because they would rather talk about that then North Korea or Iran.

Tupac's death led to more emotion than Jackson's...I'd argue the same for Cobain. Icons are going to different per person/culture so that's why you might not recognize it as much. With that said, I'm an iconoclast.

Garb
What is an icon exactly? Someone that defines an era? A generation? A trend? I mean, would Bill Gates be an icon? He should be, right? I suppose MJ is an icon because he revolutionized pop and music videos and paved the way for pop artists as ultimate entertainers - most certainly black artists. I 'dunno. I think a real icon isn't up for debate. You either are or are not. I think icons transcend age, race, political leanings, income, gender, etc.

Garb
Good point, then who are Icons that are left? I 'dunno - but I can think of "things" that are iconic....for better of worse. The mustang car, reality tv, etc. I think Marilyn Monroe was inconic. She brought sexy siren, pin-up girl, buxom blonde to the world. To me icon means someone who revolutionized and represented a change in the country, world, culture, etc. But as to who is left, I'll stick with Bill Gates. What would the world be like WITHOUT Microsoft?

war ensemble
....and MJ was an alleged pedophile. Your point? Get a corporate job and then tell me where the world would be without Microsoft, okay? Depends on the corporate job...is it one that's being helped by Microsoft-made office products or one stifled by their impossible-to-overcome assets that stifle creativity? Microsoft's not perfect and I don't see why another company couldn't simply do what they did without Bill Gates.
