Donnie Avery could miss opener

One of the least experienced wide receiver groups in the NFL just lost their best player for 4-6 weeks.

Rams No. 1 wideout Donnie Avery could miss the season opener after an MRI on his foot showed "more than we thought," according to coach Steve Spagnuolo.

Avery originally suffered the injury in Friday night's scrimmage, and the team said an initial x-ray showed no fracture. It's unclear what an MRI on Avery's foot revealed.

Marc Bulger, trying to reverse a steep career decline, will now roll with Keenan Burton and Laurent Robinson as his starting receivers through the preseason and possibly into September. Don't feel bad if those names don't look familiar; they have 661 career receiving yards combined.

Ronald Curry, acquired through a trade from the Lions, will also get a chance for more snaps.

Avery had an excellent rookie year, but is known for raw route running, and was in his first training camp in a West Coast offense. He will miss key time learning the system.

St. Louis was already planning to focus their offense around Steven Jackson and now they don't have much of a choice.
