Light at the end of the tunnel

CORTLAND _ Good morning from Cortland, where I'm watching training camp wind down, but with a lot of spirit in today's first practice.

The players have been more vocal and fired up than usual this morning, perhaps because they see light at the end of this long training camp tunnel as they draw closer to returning home Friday.

When offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who missed the last couple of practices for personal reasons, emerged onto the field at around 9 a.m., the offensive players gave him a rousing ovation.

On the injury front, there appears to be a new one _ CB Donald Strickland is standing on the sideline out of uniform wearing a boot on his right ankle and foot. (broken toe-SFJ)

RT Damien Woody (concussion)_ and LG Alan Faneca (broken finger) remain out of uniform. NT Kris Jenkins (calf) and FB Jehuu Calcrick (knee) are also not involved in team drills, instead doing calisthenics on the side of the field.

C Nick Mangold, who has a good shot at playing Monday night in Baltimore, is again in uniform, but still not participating in team drills. Same for CB Darrelle Revis (hamstring).

Cool moment last night: Kellen Clemens and his family dined at local favorite restaurant Doug's Fish Fry, where owner Mark Braun, a Jets season ticket holder, has been wearing Clemens' jersey at work the last

three weeks in his show of who he's supporting in the QB competition.

More later.

Quarterback competition 'status quo'

By MARK CANNIZZARO

CORTLAND _ The Jets' quarterback competition between rookie Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens appears to be at a stalemate.

Rex Ryan today called the battle "almost status quo'' at the moment.

Ryan then somewhat backed off his earlier words about making a decision on the starters before the Jets' Aug. 29 preseason game against the Giants.

"I'm not going to say the deadline is this,'' Ryan said. "I've said all along that I want to make the decision as fast as possible, but it's going to be a prudent decision. It's going to be a decision that, when the timing is right to make the decision, we'll make it.

"When we feel confident that we definitely have the right guy we feel good about to go against Houston, we'll make that decision.''

Sanchez took snaps with the first team in the morning practice. Both he and Clemens completed 5-of-8 passes each in 11-on-11 drills.

Among the Jets' several injured players, it looks like center Nick Mangold has the best chance to play against the Ravens Monday night in Baltimore.

Mangold, who's been nursing an injured left knee since he tweaked it last week in practice, was in uniform today for the second consecutive practice, though he worked only in individual drills, not team drills.

"Hopefully he'll be able to play Monday night,'' Ryan said today. "The way he's progressing that's a definite possibility.''

That's big-time news for rookie QB Mark Sanchez, who's starting the game and will need all the help he can get against the Ravens' defense.

"He's the best center in football,'' Ryan said of Mangold. "When you're playing against Ravens you better have someone who knows what he's doing in there. You've got to be on top of everything, because you're going to see a lot of movement, with multiple fronts and blitzes.''

Ryan said RT Damien Woody (concussion) "is getting better,'' and he, NT Kris Jenkins (calf) and CB Darrelle Revis (hamstring) "are questionable to doubtful for the game.''

FB Jehuu Caulcrick (knee) is also out for the Ravens game.

CB Donald Strickland sat out yesterday's practices with a boot on his right foot from of a broken toe he suffered in Tuesday's practice. Ryan said the injury is "not that serious an injury,'' but said he won't play Monday night in Baltimore. "If this were a regular season game he would probably play.''

****

Ryan said WR David Clowney, the fastest among the Jets' WR corps, always says to him: "Who can cover the 'Clown?''

Clowney, at the start of training camp, said one of his goals was to embarrass all the Jets' DBs in practice.

"This guy wants to be a complete receiver,'' Ryan said. "I like the strides he's making.''

****

Ryan will never be accused of lacking a sense of humor.

In a direct goof on the bold words he delivered Tuesday about not fearing Bill Belichick and Patriots, Ryan began his press conference mock reading from a script, saying in measured words how much he likes Tom Brady and Adalius Thomas.

There was a semi-contentious moment in a morning 11-on-11 drill when LB Larry Izzo put a hard-hit tackle on RB Danny Woodhead in what is supposed to be a non-tackling drill. Clemens, showing his displeasure, had a few words with Izzo and walked away shaking his head.

Moments later, DE Mike DeVito tripped up RB Thomas Jones in the backfield and forced a fumble.

If DickbagWearsAGreyHoodie just said what I think he said, shouldn't he be banned?

DarkLadyJets handled the situation her self. No need to ban anyone. She stood up and told him to put his weiner between his legs, cross them and jump up and down (F^cking himself).

He hasnt responded so I guess he's in the middle of it now.
