Earlier this week it looked like Brandon Marshall and the Broncos had made steps toward finding a way to work together, but Thursday brought new reasons for uncertainty. Marshall wasn't present when the Broncos convened for practice, just a couple of days after he was restored to a starting position on the team's depth chart.

There's no word out of Broncos camp as yet about why Marshall was absent. He could have aggravated his hip injury during practice on Wednesday, when he was a full participant, or it could have something to do with his ongoing unhappiness about his contract. The third, and most intriguing, option is that it could have something to do with his trade demand.

Teams around the league now have a pretty good idea about what they have at wide receiver entering the season, and there's been renewed chatter from some of them about upgrading that position. The Jets and Ravens, for example, are said to be monitoring the Eagles to see if their deep corps yields any players who could bolster their iffy talent at the position.

The Jets, in particular, seem like an intriguing option for a Marshall deal. They have Jerricho Cotchery and a lot of question marks at wideout at present. New York general manager Mike Tannenbaum has shown willingness to make bold moves in the past. With Mark Sanchez officially installed as the starter, the team may be looking to surround him with as much talent as possible in order to make his job as easy as possible.

For now, though, all we know is that Marshall is again away from the field and that it is highly unlikely he'll be on the field when Jay Cutler returns to Denver on Sunday night.

Bill Devaroe is reporting that marshall missed practice today, and said that there is film of him intentionally batting down passes, kicking the ball across the field and being a basic dictraction. It is believed by Devaroe that he was sent home. More to come on this breaking story.

This dude makes TO look like a saint

why Denver is keeping him around is the real mystery Matt-why wouldn't they unload his ass...ya know to US?

It would be really interesting to watch the dynamic between Marshall and Sanchez in the huddle. Sanchez has a reputation of being a great leader. I wonder if he'd be able to handle a high-maintenance guy like Marshall, especially if and when things get tough.

Am I the sexy young QB or the enigmatic, yet talented, psycho?

That is a tough one due to your metro sexual tendencies...

Anyhow it would be interesting to see Sanchez have to deal with a personality like that so early in his career. I guess the hope would be that Marshall was just happy to be out of Denver. But we know how that stuff usually ends up...

Broncos' Marshall likely out Sunday

Associated Press

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall appears unlikely to make his preseason debut in Sunday night's exhibition against the Chicago Bears after missing practice again.

Marshall, who had offseason hip surgery, has missed most of the team's training camp with a hamstring problem. He also has requested a trade after clashing with the organization and new coach Josh McDaniels over his desire for a new contract.

McDaniels refused to specify the reasons for Marshall's absence from practice. He had returned to practice Tuesday, and McDaniels had said he participated fully in the team's drills. However, Marshall appeared to hold himself out of some pre-practice warmup drills Wednesday -- the only portion of the team's workout open to the media -- and was nowhere to be seen on Thursday.

During a brief post-practice news conference, McDaniels refused to say whether Marshall's absence was health-related.

"I'm not going into it," he said. "If they're not ready or able, they're not out here."

McDaniels was then asked if Marshall was on the premises.

"I don't know where he's at right now. He was in the building this morning," McDaniels replied.

McDaniels appeared to become irritated when, in a follow-up question, he was asked whether he had spoken with Marshall.

"I'm not talking about it," McDaniels said. "He's not out here at practice. When he's ready and able to practice, he will practice. That's it."

The Associated Press sought comment from Marshall's agent, Kennard McGuire, but was told he was out of the country until Monday.

McDaniels held Marshall out of last Saturday's exhibition at Seattle, saying the wide receiver wasn't prepared to take the field in a game. Marshall missed the team's exhibition opener against San Francisco with an injury.

Marshall has only practiced a handful of times this offseason. A Pro Bowl receiver with 206 receptions the past two seasons, Marshall has sought a new contract and, after the Broncos did not act on his request, asked in June to be traded.

He pulled a hamstring on the first weekend of training camp and didn't return until a week ago. But after telling reporters that he still wasn't up to speed on the new playbook, Marshall found himself limited largely to scout team duties last week.

You know, this clown's hip problems severely effected his performance late last year, hence the off-season surgery. I wonder if his hip is as shot as his mind. Good reason to insanely pursue an extension and new guaranteed $$$. Truth is, no one has seen him work post-surgery. Yet another reason to pass.

Marshall obviously wants out of Denver. Tanne needs to get him here interview and grill him to see if he wants to play football for the JETS. His contract here could be loaded with incentives for performing on the field. The JETS need a legitimate threat at WR this season.

Marshall looks like all the worst personality traits of Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Laveraneus Coles mixed together with a little Pete Kendall thrown in for flavor. As good as he is, I really don't see why any team would want him unless you were going for it all this year. He's just another WR who will be trying to shoot his way out of town every 2-3 years.

We wouldnt take such a huge hit on salary.. the 1st round pick that we would have to give up would take care of that... we wouldnt have to pay a first round player so that would basically make up for the trade and signing marshall
