Who's in line for Notre Dame job?

If Charlie Weis is fired, there's a long list of potential successors

It seems inevitable Charlie Weis won't be patrolling the sideline for Notre Dame in 2010. Brian Hamilton takes a look at candidates to take his place, from the unlikely to the likely to the desperate measures:

Forget about it

Urban Meyer (left), Florida coach: Tough to quantify love-of-Notre-Dame factor. But easy to quantify the recruiting-

in-Florida factor. Still: Why not ask?

Nick Saban, Alabama coach: Like Meyer, has everything he could want already. Unlike Meyer, has no deep affinity for Notre Dame.

Tony Dungy, retired Indianapolis Colts coach: Said he doesn't want to coach anywhere, at any level, anytime soon. Too bad; he would be another perfect fit.

Long shots

Bob Stoops, Oklahoma coach: If he's tired of Sooners fans' expectations, what's he going to think at Notre Dame? Would be strictly a ready-for-new-

challenge move.

Jon Gruden, ESPN commentator: ESPN contract extension seems to say it all, but who knows if there's an out clause for son of former ND assistant.

Kirk Ferentz, Iowa coach: Have to think he likes his fiefdom in Iowa City. Does he want change of scenery?

In the wheelhouse

Brian Kelly (right), Cincinnati coach: Would crawl on hands and knees over broken glass for the job. Has won everywhere. But is the electric-offense, OK-defense model right for Notre Dame now?

Gary Patterson, TCU coach: Top-five defense and offense. Perfect philosophical match for ND. Only a question of whether background suggests he can handle rigors of prominent job.

Jim Harbaugh, Stanford coach: Weekly national spotlight would sate his appetites. Might want to stick it to his alma mater, Michigan. But before Oregon and USC routs, wasn't a hot name. And can you take another Stanford coach?

Butch Davis, North Carolina coach: Has pedigree from Miami days and winning with good defense in a so-so spot at North Carolina. Age (58), cancer scare in '07 have to be factors.

NO!!!!!!!! please stay in Chapel Hill Butch !!!!

Tom Clements, Green Bay Packers QB coach: A sharp mind, Ara Parseghian's last quarterback gets results everywhere he coaches. But has zero head-coaching experience, and has base forgiven him for involvement in Joe Moore episode?

In case of emergency, break glass

Al Golden, Temple coach: Young (40), energetic recruiter, defensive background, raised Temple from dead. Probably too green, has Weis-like pedigree. Ultimate fall-back guy.

ND is not in a great position. They can't recruit the best athletes because of academic restrictions and they won't get a coach worth a lick because of it. That's why Urban Meyer went to Florida in the first place. Whomever takes over for Weis will probably actually be worse. If ND ever loses that TV contract with NBC, that program is doomed.

It would probably be the best thing for them. Then maybe their delusions of grandeur would be replaced with realistic goals.

Very true

I heard they graduate around 70% which is way higher than the other schools in the hunt.

Guess again skippy

Bama is at 67% grad rate

ND requires higher SAT scores

Wrong again Seamus

Read a book

Notre Dame and Duke are graduating football players at a 96 percent rate. Navy (93), Northwestern (92), Boston College (91) and Vanderbilt (91) are next.

then why did you quote 70% skippy???????????????????????????

"I heard they graduate around 70% which is way higher than the other schools in the hunt."

Thats what a guest said on Sports radio. Seamus

Nevertheless, the premise of this guests comments were that ND holds its athletes to significantly higher academic standards than other schools competing for a Nat Championship.

Those are the facts..
