Asomugha to the Jets?

Raiders could make some big moves

Tuesday, February 23, 2010 | Print Entry

With the NFL's new league year kicking off on Friday, March 5, trade talks are intensifying -- and nowhere more so than in Oakland.

The Oakland Raiders have had multiple discussions -- with multiple teams -- in an effort to see if they can unload any of their players, league sources said. It is similar to what the Raiders did last year, when they sought out trades with other teams, only to find few takers.

The Raiders are open to dealing multiple players on their roster, including Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. The problem is that Asomugha's contract makes him virtually untradable.

Asomugha is scheduled to make a 100 percent guaranteed $16.59 million for the coming 2010 season.

As if that contract weren't problematic enough in a difficult economy, Asomugha has an $8 million roster bonus that is due on the first day of the league year -- next Friday -- meaning that a trade would have to be agreed to in the next 10 days and consummated before the Raiders paid that bonus. On top of that,

Asomugha also has a $7.83 million option bonus due on March 19.

And what makes a potential trade for Oakland's Pro Bowl cornerback even more difficult is that, after his contract expires following the 2011 season, Asomugha's team is forbidden from franchising him -- or it must pay him the average of the top five quarterback salaries, which this year would be $16.4 million.

But in the coming months, new blockbuster deals are expected for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady; this means the price to keep Asomugha beyond 2011 will be astronomical.

Thus the Raiders have tested the waters to see if any team would be interested in taking him now. Teams love the player but are unwilling to absorb the contract, thus making a deal for him virtually impossible.

Still, the Raiders are looking to make deals -- and will continue looking as the NFL's offseason prepares to kick off next week.

I doubt Davis would trade him to us out of pure hatred for the Jets, but I can dream. I'd love it if he'd be willing to renegotiate his contract to get out of Oakland and pair up with Revis which he stated during the pro bowl he's interested in doing.

Crazy Al really is crazy!!!

Check this out, this is what Asomugha is due the next 3 weeks:

March 5 -- $8 million roster bonus

March 19--$7.83 million option bonus.

Link

The Raiders have to pay Aso $15.63 million in REAL MONEY by March 19.

Forget about trading him, the Raiders might have to cut him if they can't restructure.

No, that has to do after his contract expires. The Raiders can't franchise him or they'll have to pay him a top 5 deal.

That $15+ million is set in stone and is real money. Crazy Al has to write him 2 checks by March 19 totalling over $15 million.

That's insane.

misleading thread...but I don't even think it's possible for us to get him even if we wanted to.

How was the title misleading? the title wasn't Asomugha to the Jets!. The Guy is on the block and there's been a lot of talk about this being where he wants to play alongside Revis. His contract status and the Raiders general ineptess means it could be a possibility.

Wtf is up with this retarded thread title? I opened this expecting to see the JETS mentioned atleast once in the article and nothing.

WHy does every JETS fan think every FA or RFA is going to be a JET?

Not to mention how disrespectful it would be to bring in someone who's salary eclipses Revis' by a lot.

Here's one with mention of the Jets:

http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/10692/could-the-jets-bite-on-asomugha

Three weeks ago, Oakland Raiders superduperstar Nnamdi Asomugha stood on the 50-yard line of Sun Life Stadium after the Pro Bowl and told me he wanted to form a dynamic duo with New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Although Asomugha insisted he was "dead serious," he later claimed he was joking.

But it turns out Asomugha's whimsy actually could be attainable for 2010.

ESPN's Adam Schefter blogs the Raiders are actively looking to dump players Insider, including their elite defensive back:

The Oakland Raiders have had multiple discussions -- with multiple teams -- in an effort to see if they can unload any of their players, league sources said. It is similar to what the Raiders did last year, when they sought out trades with other teams, only to find few takers.

The Raiders are open to dealing multiple players on their roster, including Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. The problem is that Asomugha's contract makes him virtually untradable.

Schefter notes Asomugha is scheduled to make $16.59 million -- all guaranteed -- this year and then explains some other wild clauses in Asomugha's contract that only underscore the Raiders' ineptitude.

But let's stop and consider this for a moment.

The Jets need a cornerback. They're almost certain to release Lito Sheppard rather than pay him a $10 million roster bonus in a couple of weeks. Jets head coach Rex Ryan places a premium value on cornerbacks. I wouldn't be surprised if simply hearing "Nnamdi" caused Ryan to throw back his head back reflexively and drool like Homer Simpson. Mmmmmm ... Elite shutdown defender ...

The Jets are handcuffed in free agency by the "final eight" plan that, one of the quirky uncapped year rules that essentially prevents them from signing an unrestricted player until one of their unrestricted free agents (Jay Feely, Tony Richardson, Marques Douglas, Larry Izzo, et al) signs elsewhere.

But the Jets can make all the trades they want.

If Asomugha really wants to play with Revis and experience life under defensive savant Ryan -- and get out of Oakland while he's at it -- perhaps he'd be willing to restructure his deal to play for a team that's trying to, you know, win.

The possibility of Asomugha still seems remote because of his contract, but the fact the Raiders are dangling him around the league makes you wonder how nauseous AFC East quarterbacks will get at the mere thought of him and Revis in green and white together.

And this is probably a thread because Asomugha came out and said during Pro Bowl week that he and Revis wanted to play together, so it's not really out of the blue or anything like that. Extremely unrealistic, but most offseason talk is unrealistic. Almost as unrealistic as the notion that people should stop talking about offseason acquisitions.

From ESPN

Nnamdi Asomugha started a firestorm of controversy at the Pro Bowl by suggesting that he and Darrelle Revis were poised to be in the same defensive backfield. Later, he clarified, saying that he was joking.

But where there's smoke, there can be fire, and such could be the case here. NFL Insider Adam Schefter has word that the Raiders are looking to swing a trade this offseason, and Asomugha is among those that the team is open to trading.

The problem, if you haven't been following closely, is the CB's contract situation, which includes an interesting clause, summarized below. But that might not keep the Jets away if he's really available, per AFC East scribe Tim Graham. Expanding on the "Revis Island" theme, we'll call the Jets' defensive backfield with Revis and Asomugha the "Rex Ryan Archipelago."

Sorry next time I'll wait till some blog or a beat writer posts an article based off pure speculation before I attempt to post an original thought and speculate on my own but there you go something is up now talking about the Jets.

This is the first thing I've posted all offseason about a potential player. If you where paying attention pro bowl week he's the one who was talking about wanting to play with Revis and Ryan so it isn't some random player. He would make the leagues best defense exponentialy better and fix the one glaring weekness we had on that side of the ball this year. It's an intresting thought but if you have something better to talk about till the combine starts go ahead.

The thread title was misleading, that was all. Now if you posted the article Night Stalker did above, I wouldnt have an issue.

I dont think Asomugha will be a JET, his contract is equal to two players'. I think it's too rich even for Tanny's blood.

I didn't bother reading it, becuase it simply won't happen. His contract is unreal. I did hear that he's going to get paid even more if Peyton Manning gets a new contract. Al Davis had an agreement with him about something like him being paid like the Top QBs.

I'll keep that in mind to prevent an issue in the future, next time I won't tie in the obvious connection myself. I'll wait around for an hour so somebody else to make the exact same speculation so it'll be more credible and less confusing for everyone.

Average of the top 5 QB's but that'll be to keep him from becomeing a free agent beyond this season, obviously we'd need to renegotiate a new contract. It's an intresting idea though given how hamstrung we are in trying to find a #2 corner. He also wants to play with Revis. Who wouldn't get excited about that idea? not counting Tom Brady of course

If we could somehow tempt Asomugha to come play for Rex Ryan and his #1 ranked defense, on a team that went to the AFC championship game with a rookie QB... I'm sure he'd consider taking a substantial pay cut to play for a "winner". $10 million/year is plenty of dough to "get by" on. Additionally, being apart of a defense that could perennially challenge for SB rings is an alternative mode of motivation that cannot be dismissed. At some point, players will emphasize legacy and championships over dollar signs [see Patriots FA signings circa 2009].

Having two "island" CBs would make our pass rush much much more effective. Also, next year we get Kris Jenkins back along with a healthy Harris and Scott. Translation: our middle is covered; and lets not count out the impact that Westerman and Murrell (and that Gholston guy) could potentially have on our team... or the impact that Thomas and Pace could really have if allowed to let it loose.

I would trade Clemens, Rhodes AND our 2010 first round pick to the Raiders to get Asomugha on our roster. I would move Lowery to safety where his ballhawking and tackling skills are better utilized and his poor catch-up speed is de-emphasized... and we would have a legitimate shut-down secondary... on a team that cannot be run on.

Draft a very talented WR in the 2nd round, get line depth through UDFAs and in later rounds... and we have a Championship!

Oh yeah, does anyone really think that Tanny WON'T make a splash this year--the year before we move to a new stadium that still needs to sell PSLs???

Asomugha turns 29 this year. He's not taking any pay cuts. He's got one last big contract left in his career, and he's going to maximize his earnings. It's not about "getting by" year to year, it's about being set for life. About having his kids set for life. Al Davis is screwed because he owes him $15M+ over the next couple weeks, and no one is going to consider taking that contract off his hands. If he were up for trade, the Jets have very little to trade with. They're already short on picks. If AN were to surprisingly get cut, there'd be a high-priced run on his services. He may not go to the highest bidder if he hates the team, but he wouldn't take "substantially" less to play for a "winner."

This.

Aso would get top dollar if he's cut, but he won't see anything close to what the Raiders game him. In that sense, he could make the argument that he "took less to go to a winner" but in reality he didn't have to.

No team other than the Crazy Al's would have signed Aso for the contract he has right now.

I'm thinking in real world terms and wondering if the Raiders can monetarily afford to pay Aso his $15 million by March 19. The Raiders franchised Seymour and what Aso is due March 19 is more than the Raiders will pay Seymour for the entire year.

We can't forget that players get paid during the season every 2 weeks besides any other payment they're due on a given day per the terms of their contracts.

The Raiders may have a liquidity issue here if they have to cut a check for Aso in such a high amount. If so, would the NFL loan them the money to cover payroll?

It's not crazy to believe that the Raiders may have to cut Aso simply because they don't have the money at the moment to pay him by March 19.

The way I see it, the player has Davis by the balls. No team will straight up trade for that contract, especially with 25% of the teams hamstrung with these uncapped restrictions. That means for anything to happen, the player has to agree to renegotiate. He could either stand pat and force them to cut him, or dictate who he will and will not negotiate with. In the end, I think he can force his way where he wants to some degree. And would you pay that much cheddar to someone who said he wanted out?
