The NFL debut of the New Meadowlands Stadium is now just six months away. The Jets and Giants, co-owners of the 2-million-square-foot pigskin palace, want the privilege and honor of being the host team when that first regular-season game is played there in September.

Who will it be? The Green & White or the Blue & Red? The decision will be made by

That won't work, for the reason you mentioned....but Jets-Giants could be the first pre-season game ever in the new stadium.

Would easily have worked. Do the 2011 schedule in 2010 and the 2010 schedule in 2011. EASY.

Probably the only way to do it. I was deathly afraid that they were going to automatically award it to the Giants for the following b-s reasons:

1) They would argue that we closed the old stadium (not that the stadium has anywhere close to sentimental value). Actually saw a Giant fan make this argument.

2) NBC wanting to nationally televise the game and being in love with NFC East matchups

3) Same teams seem to open at home almost every year and the Giants open up at home alot more often than not.

That being said, regardless of who wins the toss, I hope that we start seeing a lot more balance in the home openers. In other words, if the Giants win the toss this year, the Jets open up at home next year (and vice versa). Alternate the home scheduling.

Makes sense, as it it is the only fair way to determine who gets the game, because even if the league were to have one team play Sunday and the other play on Monday, the team playing on Sunday would still be the team to open up the stadium.

All I know is the Jets are the home team to the Giants in Week 3 of the Preseason, which will supposedly be the first NFL game played in the stadium. Weeks 1 & 2 of the Preseason both the Jets & Giants will be on the road.

Are the pre-season schedules set already? Or is this speculation?

They haven't been released yet, no, but according to the Jets the first Preseason game in the new stadium will be Giants @ Jets. Both the Giants and Jets will not play a home game in the stadium before this, and since this match-up is always Week 3 of the Preseason, it is safe to assume that it will stay Week 3 of the Preseason.

That would mean the Giants would play three road pre-season game and at most only one home pre-season game (week 4). While @ Jets isn't much traveling for the Giants, it would mess up the symmetry of each team having two home pre-season game and two away games, requiring another team to host three home games which would royally piss off the season ticket holders.

I think would be safer to assume that if the first game in the new stadium is Giants @ Jets that it will be week 1 or week 2.

Jets' claim on coin toss called into question

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2010 3:29 PM ET

On Saturday a story on the Jets' official web site reported that a coin toss would be used to determine whether the Jets or Giants got to host the first game at the teams' new stadium.

The league office says Commissioner Roger Goodell, not a coin, will make that decision.

The New York Daily News reports that an NFL spokesman (who curiously isn't named in the report) said on Sunday that Goodell is the one who "determines the schedule," and that "Other than that, we have no announcements on the schedule now."

A Giants source told the Daily News that the Jets have been pushing the coin toss idea because they think the league is planning to give the game to the Giants.

The Jets, however, stand by their story, and team spokesman Bruce Speight says, "We look forward to the coin toss."

This is bizarre.

Even more bizarre is the league supposedly held the toss w/o the Jets there and we "lost".

Sources said Jets owner Woody Johnson was "outraged" - not because the Jets lost but because no team representatives were present.
