that bum used to play for the fins. I thought he was such a steal when we snagged him int he 7th rd., ended up being a bum.

Yep, and what sucks is he's one of those guys with all the talent in the world too. Hopefully he can turn it around. Still so young definitely worth a shot. A very good signing imo. Low risk with a possible high reward.

well if anyone can get him to play well it would be ryan. so let's see what he's got. this is basically a shot in the dark. if he shows something great he gives us some depth. otherwise he's a goner an no big deal. it won't change our drafting at all.

y'know i'm at the point where even though i think you definitely need talented players....you also need a system. much like the patriots have been able to maintain a high level of play due to their system even with losing many players.......i truly believe in ryan's system. if this guy has anything at all to give to an nfl team then ryan will get it out of him and maybe we got ourselves a decent player for depth at least. if ryan can't get it out of him then he's likely toast.

UNlike what we saw from Gholston last summer when Rex was telling him "hey Vern go in there, cut this gap and blow the play up" Nothing happened. Like lighting off dud firecrackers that cost way too much $$$ to just throw away

Rodrique Wright

Position: Defensive Tackle

School: Texas

Status: Senior

Height: 6-5

Weight: 330

40-Yard Dash: 5.00 (est)

Positives:

When you watch Rodrique play, you'll notice he is often the first player off the ball. Combine that with his good speed for a 330 pound lineman, and you have many sacks and tackles for loss. He's also a very strong player, which allows him to push linemen into the backfield. Wright can also drop back and cover a small zone once in awhile, and his good jumping ability allows him to knock down some passes. He also takes up a lot of space, and draws double teams due to this fact.

Negatives:

Once in awhile, he'll take a play off. While it rarely occurs, if he continues to do this at the pro level, he won't be the player he's capable of being. He will also occasionally be over aggressive, and overrun a play, or get a costly penalty at a crucial point in the game.

Overview:

Just like when he was entering college, Wright will be the top DT prospect available. He should definitely be a top-10 pick. His size, speed, and strength make him a constant threat to get into the backfield. And he has proven he can play very well against top offensive linemen.

It will more then likely take him a couple of years to adjust to the speed of the NFL game. But he will quickly learn that he can't over-pursue plays and still have positive results like he did on occasion in college. With the right coaching and a better work ethic, he could be one of the better DTs in the game.

Excellent info! Rep'd!

Very intriguing pickup. It's all upside. I like it.

I don't recall one play from him

Ok. Sorry to hear that. I watched him close the pocket at least on one big play he drove the OT back into the QB for a pressure. Maybe Carolina? Don't know. You don't have to believe me or care to. He got some decent playing time in a few games though. And he didn't look too bad from what I saw.

LOL, I know. He is an enormous dude. I just remember noticing him on a few plays towards the end of the season and that it looked like he was holding his own. And he definitely did collapse the pocket at least that one time. It was a pretty big down too, I believe. I'm saying that because I remember saying something like wow, "Pot just made a big play."

Rodrique Wright has been a guy that looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane since high school. Always looked like he should be more productive than he was. Those types of guys don't do anything for me. Give me a Mike Devito or Jamaal Westerman type that plays above his ability and I get jazzed. We always talk about how good a guy could be if someone could light a fire under him. How often does that fire ever get lit?

Almost never, agreed. However there is major talent their...and youth.

Agree as well BUT, I think the Jets might see something in him to sign him so early.

We can't overlook the timing of the signing. They signed him before any of the OTA and offseason workouts. So unless he's a total a-hole, that means he'll be with the team at least until minicamp in June.

That's at least 3 months in the system, physical training in the Jets facility, working with the coaches, getting along with prospective teammates, etc. This gives Wright the opportunity to get into "Jets shape" before camp.

A "tryout" like the Doctor mentioned would be a signing around minicamp in the beginning of summer or even training camp in late July.

I'm not suping this guy up or anything. It's just obvious to me that with Rex's success with UDFAs and the like, the team has taken the approach of, "Let's get this guy in here early and working with us and let's see what happens."

we can try to make this a bryan thomas, vernon gholston or drob thread but none of that changes what rod wright brings to the table... and the answer is not much. if he's on the 53 man roster when the season starts I'd be shocked.

Ok but seeing he had a better college career than thomas, gholston or drob...

He's only 25, was a 4 year starter, All American, Lombardi finalist, National Champion in college. He dropped due to tearing his rotator cuff, missing his entire rookie season. He had a pretty good first year as a rotaional player and starter before injuring himself again.

So based on 13 games which was essentially a rookie year for him, and a superb college career, he stinks?

Nobody is claiming he's the second coming but it's a really good low risk signing. Don't really know why you need to rip it.

Agreed, and well said.

I expect nothing from this guy, but when you see what his potential might have been, then see a video. Of course of only his high lights, you have to think. Why not? The guy at one time seemed to have a lot of quickness, and certainly strength.

More then likely Bit is right, and he won

I wonder what he weighs now. From what I read he was 330 at the combine. The Dolphins had him drop 20-30 lbs to play 3-4 DE. I'd be interested to know what weight he's carrying and what weight they want.

Bad Religion!

Have to assume he is nowhere near football shape. That
