Jersey Wal-Mart Store is looking at security video to figure out who made the announcement Updated 10:50 AM EDT, Wed, Mar 17, 2010 Wal-Mart officials are looking at security tapes after an announcement was made for "all black people'' to leave a store in South Jersey. A man used the public-address system at the Route 42 store in Washington Township Sunday night and calmly announced: "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now.'' Patricia Covington and Shelia Ellington were inside the store when it happened and told the Courier Post that customers and store employees looked stunned when they heard it. "In 2010, I want to know why such statements are being made because it flies in the face of what we teach them [our kids] at home, and that's tolerance for people," said Ellington. Ellington and other customers let store management and police know they were upset. They asked the store to use the same announcement system to apologize to customers that night, which it did. Wal-Mart management called the incident "unacceptable," and said it's working to make sure nothing like this happens at any other stores. Washington Township police and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office are investigating the incident as a possible bias crime. "I can't believe it in this day and age," Covington told the paper. "Wal-Mart needs to be more responsible." Covington and Elllington are boycotting the store. Agreed. How many times have we been at a large box store and laughed our ass off when someone manages to get a hold of the PA code. It's classic. Once again a random jerkoff ruins it for everyone. Joseph Casias, 29, was fired in November from a Walmart store in Battle Creek, Mich., after marijuana was detected in a routine drug screening that he underwent after he sprained his knee at work. Casias, who was the store's 2008 associate of the year, said he legally used marijuana to reduce pain associated with his disease and was never under the influence while at work. "I gave them everything," Casias told Wzzm13.com. "110 percent every day. Anything they asked me to do, I did. More than they asked me to do. Twelve to 14 hours a day." Casias, who has been collecting unemployment since his termination, reportedly received a notification this week that Wal-Mart was challenging his eligibility for benefits. But Wal-Mart officials will no longer object to Casias receiving those benefits, company spokesman Greg Rossiter told FoxNews.com. "This is just an unfortunate situation all around," Rossiter said. "We're sympathetic to Mr. Casias' condition, but like other companies, we have to consider the overall safety of our customers and associates, including Mr. Casias, when making a difficult decision like this." People are still going to be racists and do and stupid things. And since you're so pissed off about this, the person who did it wins. They got what they wanted- a reaction out of you. Someone making a racist comment isnt a crime. Using a store's intercom for unauthorized purposes? Maybe. But it isnt a bias crime. Its a shame that in this day and age they would consider this a bias crime. Bashing someone over their head because they are black- bias crime. Telling blacks to leave the store? Not a bias crime.
