Eric Smith back in the fold

By Rich Cimini

S Eric Smith means business. Instead of playing the field as a restricted free agent, Smith signed his one-year tender for $1.176 million, the Jets announced today.

With Kerry Rhodes in Arizona, Smith has a chance to win a starting safety job. He'll be competing with the recently-signed Brodney Pool (one year, $1.3 million) and James Ihedigbo.

Smith is a player who has grown on Rex Ryan. During the season, Ryan candidly admitted that he thought about trading or cutting Smith last offseason, thinking he'd never fit into his system. Smith gradually won him over and stepped in to the starting lineup for a couple of games when Rhodes was in the doghouse.

Smith received the low (original draft-round) tender, meaning the Jets were entitled to a third-round pick as compensation if he had signed elsewhere. Instead of shopping around for the remaining four weeks of the RFA signing period, Smith decided he wanted to be back with the Jets.

In case you're wondering, an RFA doesn't have to sign his tender to participate in the off-season program, which begins Monday for the Jets. For the Jets, the biggest question mark is WR Braylon Edwards, who was tendered at the highest level -- first- and third-round picks.

I have a good feeling that Smith may become the starter for the Jets come opening day. I really wanted to get Rolles, not sure Pool get the start with Smith having a year in the system already. He played really well for us when we sat Kerry Cupcakes. Only thing is Smith isn't a great cover guy

I like Smith...I really do. However, this sounda an awful lot like "umm..I was sitting by the phone and it never rang so I figured 'screw it, I'll just sign the tender'.

It's gotta suck being an RFA tendered like this. He knows know one's coughing up a 3rd round pick for him, yet his alternative is signing on for one season and hoping he gets a longer term deal next year. Plus, the Jets traded Rhodes away opening the starting lineup door, only to sign Pool a couple days later. So he doesn't even have the option of grumbling privately at home during the OTA's, he has to be in NJ competing.

I don't think Smith is too worred about Poole. He's had 4, count them, 4 concusssions and he's a "hitter". Reminds me of when the dolphins signed Trent Green with his concussion history. And sure enough, he was laid out on the field never to play again.

:sign0098: Sadly for Smith, that was the bottom line. I'm glad he's back.
