It's so hard to give up on this kid because he has the speed you look for in a big play WR but for some reason he doesn't seem to have what it takes to elevate his play to that next level.

I'm hoping that he shows some skills this season to make it onto the field so we can see what he's got.

Exactly. Amazing slot speed, he just doesn't have that star potential the Jets desperately need. 1st round - Golden Tate

He's improved each of the last two years. The third year is often the breakout year for wide receivers. Keep him through training camp and see if he improved this year.

What have we got to lose?

Yeah, I can definitely see 400 yards 5 touchdowns in rout to an undefeated preseason this year

Looks like you are holding his preseasons against him.

He was hurt almost his whole first year, showed flashes his second, why not see if he's improved in his third, when many wideouts step up a big notch?

Clowney will be there this summer. I hope he's competing against a 1st or 2nd round draft pick, and maybe Laveranues Coles, too, for a job. If he's having a breakout summer and can hold them off to win the team's #3 WR spot that's good for everybody. But it would be foolish for the Jets to rely on him.

This really isn't a joke. Miles Austin had 18 for 350 going into last year. Robert Meachem had 12 for under 300. They both put up numbers. Some guys take time to get it.

Agreed. Fine by me.

No it isn't. If you are one of these Jets fans who makes a negative judgement on somebody, it is much more important for the kid to fail and amaze everyone on a message board of your great wisdom. As opposed to hoping he surprises, helps your team and have to admit you were wrong.

I don't want Clowney to fail because I can then say "I was right". I want him to succeed, but know he will fail, and would rather get a new slot receiver in here. Big difference.

I mean, do YOU trust Clowney as a starter if Braylon or Cotchery go down?

I'd like to give him another training camp and preseason to show us if he can fit that role. I think his visible improvement on the field during the season earned him at least that.

Incidentally, is there some rule that Clowney has to be our number three wideout? What about a number 4 wideout?

We have to acquire a # 3 WR before that can happen. There's no guarentee on that, and holding onto Clowney while dispatching a guy like Wallace Wright who contributes on special teams too tells me that they may be ready to stand pat with Edwards, Cotchery, Clowney and Brad Smith, with a replacement for Wright as a # 5 / special teamer.

My point is, how do you or others "know" he will fail? Whenever he has been given a chance, he has produced. Even catching several short passes in traffic for first downs, which was supposedly one of his weaknesses.

I agree we need at least one more receiver in the mix. But as a 4th or even 5th WR with his potential upside, it is insane to want him cut.
