NFL taking measures to avoid tanking

all this talk of tanking assumes a LeBron type talent at #1 (which basically never happens)

most years no one in the NFL wants to be close to #1

until they redo the salary structures for these picks no one will tank to get a draft pick

i do agree with the proposal to keep playoff teams honest maybe... its supposed to be entertainment not preseason

I don't agree with making teams play their starters. If you want to make the last two games against divisonal teams that's fine. But in the end what matters the most??? Not being undfeated, it's winning the title.

Yea - could you imagine the outcry if Manning, or Brady were forced to play and then got a season ending injury? The NFL would suffer irreparable damage, and this is an image league isn't it!

While the Colts-Jets game is probably what finally caused this to get done, I have been saying for years that the last three games (week 15, 16 & 17) should be all division games.

It will make for better football.

1. Teams will be less like to clinch early. Forcing the teams to play their starters and have meaningful football.

2. Teams will be eliminated later. Once your favorite team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, watching the games become pointless and talk starts turning to who to draft. This will result in more teams still "in the hunt" later in to the season, make later games more meaningful.

3. Teams that are "hot" in December will be more likely to make the playoffs. Some times you will have teams that were playing their best football in Sept and Oct make the playoffs and a team whose playing their best football in Nov and Dec miss, because the bulk of the division games were early and a bunch of out of conf games were late. Having the hot teams make the playoffs, provides for a better post-season product.

When 10 or 11 out of the 12 the playoff spots are locked up week 17, it is not as much fun to watch football as when there are still 6 or 7 divisions that are yet to be decided.

i thinkit will make for more exciting late season football as well. there will be more chances for a team that's not making the play-offs become a spoiler against a division rival or even for divisions to be decided in last 2 or 3 weeks of the season.....this is definitely a good idea for having exciting, meaningful football late in the season

Why is this even an issue?

If the Colts sat Dwight Freeney to rest for the playoffs, no big deal.

Now if they sit Manning we need a rule change?

You cannot change the way things are done based on one unique situation.
