People that go to concerts...

NIGHT STALKER

Recommended Posts

When I was going to concerts many moons ago, my only beef with certain artists that would perform their hit(s), was that they would at times put their own spin on the way they song their hit...in other words, I wanted to hear the song exactly the way I heard it either on the radio or record (yes, record...I said many moons ago).

Does it bother you all that much or are you satisfied with just listening and enjoying the atmosphere?

I used to feel that way too and it used to bug me when I would buy a "live" album and my favorite songs sounded a little different. Now, I don't go to concerts that much so I'm not sure.

I get extremley pissed when this happens. Saw the Chilli Peppers and they pulled this stunt on a few songs were the guitarist went into a heroin induced guitar solo for like 15 minutes staight, trying to make weird orcha whale sounds with his guitar and ruined the song. Another thing that bugs the hell out of me is when i go to see an artist and they decide to play their new album in entirety and ignore their older hits. The only reason i was at said concert was to hear the hits, not an entire album of something i'm not very fond of.

when a band comes out with a new album they go on tour to promote it. why would you expect not to hear almost the entire new album? yeah...they'll usually play a couple of the hits but unless it's reunion tour you can expect to hear almost all of the newest album and not much of the older stuff you love so much.

Dude it's a terrible new trend with these bands playing new albums from start to finish. A few songs of the new album will do. Theres very few and i mean very few artist that i would want to sit and listen to their entire new album live...play the hits bro.

That's the kind of thing I hope for when I go to a show.

When I saw David Bowie a couple years ago, I was kinda bent because he didn't do nearly enough of his old stuff. Opened up with Rebel Rebel, and never looked back again. Way too much from his latest album, which I didn't care about at all. But I liked when he took an alternate take on a couple tunes.

I expected Death Cab For Cutie to be something of a little pop act, and they turned out to be this totally cool noisy guitar band that I didn't expect at all. That was awesome.

Neil Young always seems to do something different with his songs, and that's what I'm hoping to see from him.

I think it's boring to just hear the record live. I used to love The Cars, but they were one of the dullest shows I ever saw.

nah i think it's cool. i guess since i play music myself that i enjoy that kind of stuff.

See, the problem is with a fan/consumer like myself, the only reason I like the song and perhaps purchased it was the way the artist originally performed it...not a new version of that song because he/they felt like doing it differently.

That's only because he is too fried to remember the words

that's probably true but i was talking more about the guitar side of the music, not really the words.

LIke i said, i've never seen the man play, just what i have heard.

I feel you. I hate when artists do it and dont do it right. If they do however they can still make it hot. For example. Jay-z with this song "song cry". He incoroportes Mary J. in it as well as a few beats from other songs as well as a freestyle but at the end it was hot.

I remember at first not liking any changes in the live performance as well. I knew every note and wanted it played that way. Guess I still want it to be close.

Recreating the studio performance with all its tricks can be a tall order. Getting simpler however with today's technology.

You can also think about it this way. The record is a snapshot of the song at that time. You can read a ton of interviews with guys that say 'they wished they'd done this or changed that a bit', but it's history so you can't do anything about the record.

But the song can still evolve during the live performance and if that's where the artist wants to take his song, he will. We might not always like it.

But after saying that, yeah, there's probably some stuff that shouldn't be messed with.

I like when bands cover another bands song and put their spin on it.

I love that! Back when Napster was free, I used to search "cover," and found a ton of great stuff I still have on discs. Ozzy doing Matchstick Men and Staying Alive, Barenaked Ladies doing Gin and Juice. Great stuff!

The last time Iron Maiden played Ireland, it was the AMOLAD tour, and they played the album in its entirety. All 70+ minutes of it. I thought it was a great night, added to that was the fact that for once I was able to see Maiden and not have to listen to Run to the Hills.

I've no problem listening to bands slighty alter things live. If I wanted to hear a song note for note, I'd just stay at home and put on the stereo. One thing I do hate though are medleys.

Did you look back in anger? :P

They're a great band. I saw them @ Radio City as to the above post and had a groove. The singer used to be this really nerdy chubby guy, but he lost a lot of weight since they started out back in '97 and now he's a slim nerdy guy. Good for him. There really aren't any songs of theirs that I don't like. 'Stable Song' is one of my favorites.

I think we were at the same show. I saw them last year (I think!) at Radio City. Loved them.

Haha, Napster those were the days. I wish I saved the ones I had. I think I had a version of Phish doing Gin and Juice. Or some Snoop song.

I've seen Neil Young a dozen or so times and he never does a song the same way.

Bummed to hear that about Bowie...he's one of my all time favs and I'd love to see him live...but that would turn me off a bit. Still cool to see you saw a legend.

The lead singer/founder of Death Cab was also one of the founders of Postal Service. Postal Service was awesome as hell and had a really cool vibe going on.
