Stanford RB Gerhardt to have private workout with Jets Monday

it really seems that way don't it Kleck? The Jets always do this with players they are about to get rid of-say he's "in their plans" but let slip how unhappy they are about this or that and then poof: they're gone...they'll never get that 2nd rounder for him but I can see him getting traded on draft day in some slide up the board deal

Im not sold on Gerhart. I'd be pissed if we blew a pick on him.

What possible basis can you not be sold on Gerhart from besides the fact he's white? Honestly the dudes a beast and will be a workhorse in the league for whatever team is smart enough to draft him. If he wasn't white he'd be a sure fire 1st round pick at RB.

Who the fukk said anything about his race? Didnt I explain that I'd much rather a Leon type change of pace back instead of another Shonn Greene clone? Nice presumption there...

I'd doubt they end up drafting Gerhart, but I wouldn't cry if they did. They have to be ready if/when Shonn Greene runs into a hit he doesn't spring up from. Like Marion Barber and Brandon Jacoobs have shown, these new-age physical backs--regardless of how tough they are--just can not last a full season in the NFL. And unless you think Tomlinson is a 250+ carry back, that 3rd running back slot is key right now. Gerhart would look good--and be an immediate fan favorite--in that role.

LOL and a big +1. It does sound utterly ridiculous not being sold on a consensus First team All-American, Doak Walker Winner, Heisman finalist, who ran a 4.53 at 231lbs at the combine, holds every offensive record at Stanford and is supposed to be a super, smart kid and a great teammate.

But dudes definitely white.

Well, in DLJ's defense, there hasn't been a good white RB in the league in, what, 20 years? The dude played at Stanford, isn't a premiere athlete despite the 4.55, and did a lot of damage in a weak conference.

If you want to incorporate the race argument, white dudes just don't have the lateral agility to make it in the NFL. Racist or not, point out the white dude that can do it or has done it, particularly after the inevitable leg injury he'll suffer at some point. It's just not done.

I'm trying to think...Craig James?

Toby is an interesting player, to say the least. He's got a rather unique skillset. IMO, he would be a perfect compliment to Leon and Greene, but not a good compliment to Greene and LT which is what we're probably looking at.

If you're gonna go Greene, LT, then I think you need a Washington kind of guy.

Allow me to say again that LT is a waste of space on this roster. The roster should read Greene, Leon, Gerhardt. LT offers little but pass catching, which we could have if we just kept Leon...

Yeah I have to believe it's some kind of move to sell PSLs. Should have either kept Jones to be Greene #2 or drafted a young back. Tomlinson makes the least sense of any possible move, except if you're just looking for attention.

Back on topic: I think you're right about our situation, but only because we've got Tomlinson.

Crazy, isn't it? Lol I think the Bears had a guy a few years back--can't recall the name. But, it's like the black QB thing, I imagine, where teams don't give these guys a chance until they see someone else do it first. A good black athlete with a feel for the passing game WAS automatically stuck at WR or TE simply because the pro model didn't include a black QB. Similarly, if you're a white H.S. athlete with speed and you wanted a scholarship, you played lacrosse or center field--NEVER RB or WR. But with guys like Welker and Stokley starting to re-emerge as playmakers, guys like Jordan Shipley will get a sniff as a legit second round pick and Riley Cooper might be a 4th rounder. If Gerhart works out at the pro level, more college teams might give more of those lacrosse players a chance at HB. I hope he makes it.

I have no issue with us drafting a RB, I'd much rather replace Leon with a McCluster type player, with speed, agility and escapability rather than blow another pic on a RB who is a clone to the two we already have.

Of course you're right. We're talking about replacing Leon with someone, you have to replace him with someone similar not a power back.

Here's the main reason I don't want to draft Gerhart before the fourth round:

"Tommy Vardell was a star running back for the Stanford Cardinal. In 1990, Vardell was given the nickname "Touchdown Tommy" by then Stanford head coach Denny Green after scoring four touchdowns (all from the one yard line) against Notre Dame. For the Cardinal, Vardell rushed for 1,843 yards with 37 touchdowns in his college career. He never fumbled once for Stanford, and ranks second in Stanford football history for most touchdowns and third for most rushing yards. Until his record was broken by Toby Gerhart in 2008, Vardell held the record for most rushing yards in a season by a Cardinal running back, with 1084 yards in 1991.[1]"

second post I've read of yours were you've given your opinion and when someone has given theirs you jump all over them. No one is saying your's is wrong, they just have a different one. Relax and enjoy the conversation.

Clearly you didnt read the post where he jumped over me saying I didnt like Gerhart because he was white.

clearly I did, and I'm pretty sure he was kidding. Most people in the sporting world don't give a crap about race, they care about winning. If you've ever been on a team, you'll notice we are all brothers striving for the same goal.
