A Prophet is the current megahit French Indie thats in Art Houses now.

It has a 90 on Metacritic and its been embraced by many especially in Europe.

Its the story of a 18 year old French-Arab juveenile who is somewhat innocent as he enters the French Penal system. Ye sI get that the film is trying to appeal to Prison reformers by showing that the Systems breed criminals more than it reforms them. Newsflash: I knew that.

Its somewhat entertaining, as a Syndicate is run form inside the Prison. I also learned the uiltra Liberal French system allows passes to pretty hardened criminals which they use to further criminal acts. I have this feeling that the reviews are more for the subject matter than for artistic content.

I thought it dragged on more than was bearable and 2 1/2 hours of a moribund pacing was too much for me.

I saw this at the Angelika a few weeks ago. I left there thinking "So, that's French cinema." Good acting, ridiculously slow pacing and a story that just meanders forever. Again, spot-on review, SJ.
