Favorite B&W movie?

Anyone have any favorite black and white movies? I was just thinking of an old WC fields movie called "It's a Gift" that I used to love watching when I was a kid. I might even try to order it online just for a laugh.

"Harvey" was another one I watched quite a bit as a kid. Oh, and "show boat" too. Some pretty good ones.

Anyone have a favorite oldie or two?

Any old Gangster movie with James Cagney -- Bogart a close second

Angels with Dirty faces is probably my favorite.

I watched a ton of Cagney and Bogart when I was a kid but have a hard time remembering the names of most of them. Angels with dirty faces rings a bell.

I think the one with Cagney I liked most was the one where he played an ex-con who was looked up to by a bunch of kids and there was a priest trying to get him to be a better role model. When they executed him at the end you didn't know if his crying for help was out of fear or to teach the kids to clean up their act. Was that AWDF?

EDIT: Yep...just looked it up on IMDB. That was a good flick.

Yep, that's the one. The kids were the Bowery Boys who, IIRC, had their own slew of B&W movies that they used to show on weekends.

Abbot & Costello meet Frankenstein

My favorite was the one where Costello was a ghost stuck on an estate, and Abbot found the letter from George Washington in the clock that set him free in the end. Don't remember the title, but it was a step above the usual A&C fare.

Ah yes, Horaaaaaatio!!! It's called the "Time of their lives."

My Mom raised us on old movies and monster movies... I know more about these old flicks than a 30-something should.

Two of the three best westerns ever made were in black and white: Stagecoach and Red River.

And the best movie ever made was in black and white: It's a Wonderful Life.

What killed Hollywood was the outlawing of block booking in the 50s, before that they made more great movies than you can count. Studios used to force theatres to buy all their production for the year instead of buying one movie at a time, this was eventually outlawed. In the old days they would give new people a shot by letting them work in one of the low budget movies theaters were forced to buy to get the "good" movies. And if you did well in a low budget movie they would move you up. It was like baseball with the minor leagues. When block booking was outlawed Hollywood lost its minor league system and the talent pool dried up.
