Miami Dolphins: Will Jason Taylor meet with Tony Sparano?

by: Mike Berardino April 12th, 2010 | 8:01 PM So apparently there’s a Chris Mortensen ESPN-TV report out there about a planned meeting between Tony Sparano and Jason Taylor at some point this week.

However, a Dolphins source tells the Sun Sentinel’s Omar Kelly that’s news to him, and we’re still trying to confirm this report with Taylor’s camp.

If true — and Mortensen is as plugged-in as they come — that would be a good sign for Dolphins fans still hoping to see the team retain one of its most decorated players in franchise history.

Really, it would be the first positive sign yet in terms of a possible 13th season for JT in South Florida.

I stand by my report on Friday in which a Taylor associate said a deal with the Jets is “close to done.” Just because nothing has been announced doesn’t mean the two sides have much more to talk about. Basically, reading between the lines, the NFL’s active sacks leader is sitting back and pondering how he wants to close out a Hall of Fame career.

In the meantime, agent Gary Wichard went on Sirius NFL Radio early this evening and had some interesting things to say about Taylor’s two-day visit last week with the Jets and his personal feelings on whether he’d like to see Taylor jump to his longtime rival.

“Truthfully it’s really kind of in Jason’s hands,” Wichard told hosts Howard David and Pat Kirwan. “We told him we’d be speaking to him a little later in the week. Nothing has changed.

“Jason went up there. He’s never been a free agent. He wanted to see what the situation was. Rex [Ryan] was very aggressive in going after Jason, so he wanted to have an opportunity to see what it was. He was pretty excited, to be honest, about their program and what they want to do. Now it’s really between his wife and he and moving the family, etc.”

The hosts did not ask Wichard about Mortensen’s repot about a potential Sparano-Taylor summit this week, but the agent said again that Taylor “and Tony have a great relationship.”

“After the draft, if [Taylor] doesn’t go to New York, that’s probably where he’ll end up,” Wichard said of the Dolphins.

The Jets have not set a deadline for Taylor to make up his mind regarding their offer, Wichard said.

“You know, they really haven’t, which was good,” Wichard said. “A prerequisite of the whole thing was Jason and Katina getting up there and spending time with Rex and meeting the players and seeing what Madison, N.J., was all about.

“Then [the Jets] said, ‘Just go back and figure it out.’ I don’t think it will be anything lengthy as far as that goes, and I don’t think it would be fair to not do it before the draft if that was the situation.”

Asked how he thought Jets fans might receive him and whether Taylor was wary at all about that, Wichard laughed.

“As a matter of fact, he loves playing up in New Jersey there and loves the fans because they’re so passionate,” Wichard said. “He gets a kick out of it. He’s kind of said things to incite Fireman Ed and some of the Jet fans.

What he digs is the passion. He always liked that. He always wanted to play in front of people like that. Whether it was up in New York or in Miami or wherever they went. He got a kick out of it and just enjoyed the kind of banter back and forth over the years.”

And then came the final JT-related question for an agent who also represents likely 2010 first-round draft picks Jimmy Clausen, C.J. Spiller, Taylor Mays and Everson Griffen, just to name a few.

Would Wichard himself, a former C.W. Post All-America quarterback who grew up on Long Island, like to see Taylor sign with the Jets?

“Me? Absolutely. Absolutely,” he said in a typical burst of honesty. “First of all, [Ravens linebacker and Wichard client] Terrell Suggs told me once every defensive player should be able to play one year with Rex Ryan. That’s kind of what I said to Jason, I think, when I finally convinced him to go up there.

“[Ryan] has just got an unbelievable way of motivating guys, and I know sometimes he speaks kind of unfiltered and gets himself in trouble. He embraces his guys and his guys embrace him. I’ve watched him all through the Baltimore days. He’s just dynamic when it comes to getting these guys to play.”

This week, perhaps, we’ll find out how dynamic Tony Sparano can be when it comes to getting an all-time great to stay.

The dude covers his a*s by throwing Miami in there in the end but we get it... Xerxes, would love to play for real passionate fans.

However Jason... KICK ROCKS! be don't want ya... now go crawl back to your "passionate" fan base and beg for forgiveness!!

With the signing of Santonio I think Taylor will be on his way. The bottomline is that this may be his last year. He's looking for a ring. Not to say he's jumping the bandwagon, because if he were then it would be the Patriots he'd go to. However, I think that Jason recognizes how close we are talent wise and we have a coach that EVERYONE wants to play for. This is literally a once in a career opportunity literally for this guy.

This is going to be a crazy season I know that much.

Is anyone surprised that the Jets are giving JT all this time to decide on whether he wants to sign? Unless some agreement has already been made, I don't like the idea that we are giving this turd what looks like a week or more to decide.

What are we missing out on? The opportunity to sign Mark Brunnell? That's the only guy we've had in that this effects. Who gives a ****? He can sign or not, no skin off my apple.

The problem I have (and perhaps it's a local one because I live in South Florida) is that if he doesn't sign after all this time, the local media and fans will have a field day on how he made the Jets hang on a string...sort of his MO of what he has thought of the Jets and their fans through the years.

I agree...but on the other hand, if he does end up signing with the phags and falls on his face, we get the last laugh...

What's the rush, at the end of the day, in my opinion signing Taylor would not or should not change our draft strategy. We still need depth, and more importantly youth for our D and O lines, so he can take all the time he wants.

Yeah, it's probably a bit of a local problem. From a global perspective I'm sure I find it much easier to avoid sports radio than the rest of the board. The only times I hear it it's either in Italian about soccer or while I'm watching the channel guide on AFN. The problem you have is that if she doesn't sign with the Jets you'll have to deal with them, but not with that douche on our team.

The thing I missed most last year while in Italy was the sports channels..I had to watch BBC just to get scores and it sucked big ones..

It's the 21st century! Use the damned computer! I have to admit that I'm a caveman and usually watch everything on AFN. If you get a slingbox you can watch your home cable over any high speed internet line. My buddy was able to watch his (cough, cough) Boston cable on the iphone while in the hospital here because they have wifi.

Would not surprise me at all if the Jets have a gentlemen's agreement with Brunnell in place to sign him as soon as the Final Eight Rules expire.

I thought Jets fans were bad with the “Sky is falling” thingy.

Fist the Taylor thing, now, with the Dolphins desperately needing a WR, the Jets snatch Holmes. The fans, and the sports show hosts all want the Tuna fired. Some even are calling shows and saying that Parcells is really a Jets fan, and he and Tannenbaum are good friends, and Bill just came to Miami to destroy the Dolphins franchise to make Tannenbaum look good..

I don't see how someone could think taking a 1-15 disgrace of a football team and turning them into a respectable football team and helping them to a winning record the over the last two years is "destroying the franchise." I, like most dolphin fans, are frustrated that the front office refuses to make a move for a #1 caliber WR, but i've come to the fact with all the WR's that were available this offseason, they simply do not covet the position as much as us. Brian Hartline and Greg Camarillo it is.

Wouldnt surprise me either. I also fully expect us to address DL, CB, OL depth in this draft, going with BPA in those categories... If we still have picks left after that, Im thinking they'll be looking at a WR and a S. I also would not be surprised to see them re-sign Marques Douglas after the draft on the cheap if he cannot generate interest elsewhere...

iphone! iphone! Something you can pretend is your phone, but will get the internet while she is in the shower! If you come back, let me know. I know my way around this country pretty well AND I can keep track of the scores. ;)

Sure. I wouldn't be surprised. I would imagine that have gone through all the options with Brunnell, Taylor, Douglas and Coles. Coles should know to shop elsewhere. Douglas is probably aware of what the offer will be and will come back if he can't top it. Brunnell is probably waiting until July 22 or Taylor makes a decision.

Yet that fat tub of **** sure seemed enamored with Keyshawn.

Meh.

Take a day off from reading the paper. The Jets D was #1 without him. We already upgraded #2CB and at worst have a push at S. We don't NEED Taylor, and that's what puts us in an advantageous position with little to lose, but if he could get 8-12 sacks, he would be a great addition to what should be a great year, w/ or w/o him.

At 1-15, did he really even need to work that hard?

Wow, Coles. He's probably less happy than Clowney about the Jets trading for Holmes - unless he can get himself a gig with the Steelers now. I agree on Douglas, too. I'm sure the Jets are eying his position in the draft.

I'm pretty sure Parcells didn't draft Keyshawn and it's well noted he was forced into taking Terry Glenn.

IMO, we need Jason Taylor.

We don't have a pass rusher and I don't think we can get one at 29.

I also don't think we have the ammo to move up in the 1st round without bankrupting the rest of the draft or without giving away players or without giving up picks next year.

Whats funny about this is all the Jet fans making the gay slurping on testes comments and sounds.....Who's the f****t?

Jason Taylor.

Lucky for him estrogen wasn't a banned steroid all these years.

But I'll admit he is talented. And I'm sure if he does somehow sign here he can show off how truly talented he is by fitting Santonio Holmes' entire elephant trunk down his throat.
