McCourty would do fine at pick No. 29

What if the Jets could fool the draft? What if they could see what they were getting before they actually picked? What if they could watch a player's rookie year before he even played an NFL game?

That is what the Jets could have with Rutgers' cornerback Devin McCourty. You see McCourty's twin brother is already in the NFL. Jason, a sixth round pick a year ago out of Rutgers, started three games for the Titans and will compete for a full-time corner job in 2010. It is like the Jets (and others, for that matter) can see the future.

"It has given them a preview," Jason said from Nashville.

The Jets have had success before with a Big East cornerback, whose first name starts with a "D" and is known for doing things the right way. While he probably won't be Darelle Revis, Devin McCourty -- from Rutgers via Nyack -- could be the Jets choice with the 29th selection in the first round.

Do you think he is a Rex Ryan-type of player? Read how Devin's college coach described him.

"He likes to stick his nose in there," Rutgers Greg Schiano said.

Schiano added Devin, who used to play safety, is as tough as they come.

Still, before Jason made an impact in the NFL, scouts viewed Devin as more of a fringe prospect. He had been an outstanding special teamer, including an excellent returner, but Devin doesn't think many had noticed until Jason did what he did.

"I think it has helped a lot," said the 5-foot-11, 193-pound Devin. "Coming into the season, no one was talking about me being a first or second round pick."

For Devin to be considered on par with his brother, he needed to first fall behind him. Coming out of Nyack, Schiano said that colleges recruited Jason more heavily than Devin. After being dinged up his senior year of high school Devin red-shirted as a freshman in Piscataway. Everyone involved thinks that was the best thing that ever happened to Devin.

"I know it really benefited him," said Jason, who, in hindsight, wishes he had the extra year.

i like Devin Mccourty, but i think it's highly unlikely he's there at 29.
As it gets closer to draft night the more I feel like Tanny will trade up to get his guy, be it McCourty, Graham or someone else. I am among the majority who would like to see the Jets trade down and get more picks to restock the roster but lets face it, its hard to argue with Tanny's record in this regard. And it will be very exciting for the Jets to get exactly the guy they want (Graham?) instead of waiting to see who lands at #29.

Ours might be the hardest spot in the bottom half of the first to project because of the order. In particular it's hard to say whether a particular defensive player is going to be there or not. The teams with needs clearly distinct from ours pick after us, and we're at the tail end of a run of teams that generally have solid offenses, similar defensive schemes, and needs in the secondary, and at the same time there are a couple of stoppers that look to keep a lineman like Pouncey or Iupati from falling all the way to us. I still think we end up taking McCourty, Jackson, or Robinson but I'm less sure than a week ago and if the board falls like I think it will this may be the year the trade down monkeys get their wish.

thats fine, but my argument is that McCourty ran a legit 4.3 at Indy that puts him in a higher tier than Jackson or Robinson, both in the 4.4 range. McCourty is a top tier Corner right now... KJack and Robinson are not as rare athletes.

Okay. Looking at today's Gosselin mock (yes, I know), I'll concede Robinson, because it's pretty clear that any line that makes him the pick at 29 mandates a trade up instead.

:sign0098: I couldn't have said it any better myself. Based on Tanny's track record we'll be moving up to get the guy he's targeted. I HATE giving up multiple picks like that but as you said, his track record can't be argued.

I could live with Alabama's Kareem Jackson at 29.

.

The NFL Network just had the Jets taking him at 29 on their final mock draft.
