Caller ID "spoofing"

I guess you can't trust what the caller ID display says.

I had never heard of this before, until I checked my messages a couple of days ago. My answering machine light was displaying that I had a message. I clicked the playback button, but there was no message left, just a hangup. I picked up the handset to check the caller ID list to see who may have called, (thinking it could have been one of the kids) and to my surprise and confusion, it was my own home phone number that had called.

My own home number, listed in my husband's name, our area code, our phone number.

Did a little internet searching, and lo and behold, apparently you can buy "phone cards" of some sort, and you can use them to call someone and have the caller ID display whatever you choose. (Wow, you could have a ton of fun with this, but it can also be very mischievous)

I guess I should have caught on, I have received telemarketing phone calls with strange IDs, (ARIZONIA, CALIFORNIA, 000000000, etc.)

Anyway, I guess congress is attempting to pass a law to outlaw this procedure.

It's probably a good thing, just based on the fraud that could be committed with this.
