Tannenbaum was on Boomer and Carton this morning

Anyone hear it? He gave some insight into the two hot button issues of the board right now (Faneca and Leon), amongst other things. He of course didn't badmouth anyone, and even if locker room politics amongst other things did contribute to the release/trade, he only spoke about it from the on-field perspective. Here is my recap:

1. He thanked Faneca for all he did while here and said the team felt it was the best thing for them and him for them to release him now and give him as much time as possible to sign on somewhere else. They said he earned that.

He said that they felt it would be best for Vlad's development and confidence not to have Alan here. He said there would be some bumps in the road like there will be for any rookie and looking over your shoulder at a 10 time pro bowler would definitely not aid in his development or confidence.

He mentioned Slauson as well and said it will be an open competition for the LG job, but went right back to talking about Vlad and how they had him ranked so high on their board and they were thrilled to be able to get him where and when they did. Said with both Miami and New England in their division running very effective 3-4 defenses, they feel Vlad's strengths will allow him to match up very well from a physical and athletic standpoint.

Above all else however he said that everything done was done so because of their confidence in Bill Callahan.

2. Regarding Leon, he said that drafting McKnight is what sealed Leon's fate. They already felt they had the return department taken care of with Brad Smith, but drafting McKnight assured them that they had a replacement for Leon's skills out of the backfield.

He consulted Mark Sanchez prior to drafting McKnight. They loved his athletic skills but heard rumors that he was expected to be the next Reggie Bush at USC and slacked off when he was awarded the job. They asked Mark what he felt about his work ethic and if he would feel comfortable with McKnight protecting his blindside. Mark said that he wouldn't endorse just any USC player becuase they were a past teammate of his, but he certainly would endorse McKnight.

3. He spoke about HBO's Hard Knox and said he was the last to get on board with the idea. Said that they built this tremendous state of the art training facility and Rex throws them a curveball last year by saying he wants to get away just him and the team to small, quiet SUNY Cortland. At first they didn't like the idea but as always, Rex hit a homerun and was right. Now this year we're going back, but now we'd be inviting the hoopla of HBO and it's cameras which would seem to totally contradict what was so great about going there last year.

He said what got him on board was speaking to Ozzie Newsome (Ravens GM) and Marvin Lewis (Bengals head coach) both of whom have participated in HBO's Hard Knox. Both had extremely positive feedback about the experience and said the constantly rolling cameras brought an extra level of effort and competitiveness to every practice, every drill, etc. since guys knew they were being filmed and they'd be damned if they were going to slack it, miss a tackle, or blow a coverage.

Ultimately that was it in regards to important things. You can ask questions if you'd like but that is a solid overall summary.

"Do the Jets have any interest in Adalius Thomas?"

Tannenbaum: "Maybe down the line, but nothing imminent right now. We're gonna stand pat with what we have and maybe down the line we'll add a player or two."

CLASSIC Tannenbaum line...always means the opposite. Like how he said we're confident in our safeties (right before signing Pool) and we're confident in our receivers (right before Santonio)

Expect a signing real soon. :)

The only other things I would add about the interview was that it was clear the Jets no longer projected Alan as a starter for the team, which probably does mean they plan on passing alot more. He also stressed the point that he wants Mangold, Brick, and Sanchez to become leaders of the team. I think if you read between the lines that is another reason why they dumped so many vets known as "leaders", as they dont want to see their growth hurt by the veterans.
