Is anybody watching this excellent series? I watched the first episode late last night. It starts with the Jamestown Settlement and goes up to the end of the Revolutionary War. Tonight is the second episode but they are re-running part 1 at 6PM-7PM again tonight to be followed by part 2 at 7PM.

Do yourselves a favor JNers and watch this, it's the best series since Ken Burns' Civil War PBS documentary series but with a decade hence of unbelievable technology in HD.

The bank of America commercials during it were pissing me off, though. They were trying to pretend to be part of the documentary, and doing a pretty good job of it. I'm sure some people watching didn't even realize.

So far, I think it's a little sugar-coated, too. I want more People's History of the United States kinda dirt when I watch these programs.

Jimmy, I hate to say it, the majority of people (not all) don't give two ****s to the wind about American history. Not calling out people here on JN, but I know from their political slant, they go about their business without giving a second thought about the freedom they enjoy...you, even though we differ our political views, with your rich history of your family sacrifices, I know you appreciate what they have given to this great country of ours.

Fact is, 1/3 of of the colonies fought for freedom. 1/3 sided with the Brits and the remaining 1/3 didn't care one way or the other.

This is a great country, greatest on the planet, screw what anyone else says!

Interesting to see how we got here...though the History Channel usually sugar coats or exaggerates sh!t for ratings.

You know from their political slant that they don't care about their freedom. Which "political slant" is this, might I ask?

Oh, and he started it with the politics. Unnecessary jab with no substance behind it.

politics didn't even come into it for me Bill. They had some big time republicans talking commenting during part 1: Colin Powell, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Guliani and Donald Trump and all I felt was pride for my country when they were talking, because these are some smart and patriotic guys -we're all Americans first and foremost.

He started it, he started it...give me a break will ya. I didn't start anything. Been around the block a few times and I can take as many jabs as I want since I personally had to take abuse back in the 60's from a certain group.

Next time, take a note of when someone takes the time to thank present and past vets on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day and the ones that ignore it...if you have a problem with understanding where I'm coming from, PM and I'll post you some "take it for granted JN citizens".

Calm down, bro. It's a thread about the history of America. There's no need to attack liberals. Seeing as the series seems to be at the Revolutionary stage around now, the "liberals" were generally the ones supporting revolution. Conservatives were loyalists. I mean at least this has some relevance, but it's not the place to rant either way--especially in a no politics forum. My "he started it" was simply to justify my response which is technically against forum rules.

I watched it last week and will watch again tonight. I like it, but they gloss over SO much. I get the necessity for that, trying to pack so much into a short series, but I enjoy History Channel shows dedicated to certain events, with more time dedicated to them.

It's between this or Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking...Hawking won...who doesn't want to hear the smartest man in existence talk about the universe, the existence of aliens, and what he thinks the aliens might look like?

You are 100% correct...I take it way too personal and it's not right to bring it up in this thread. Too many memories of the 60's that I will never, ever forget.

One thing about those "liberals" back then though...they were trying to get freedom from the mother country and all its imposed sanctions. A lot different of the "liberals" back in the 60's who were spitting on military personel who represent the United States of America and don't make policy.

They were seriously wrong, and I don't believe you see that anywhere, anymore. I certainly hope not.

I have the utmost respect for our armed forces, much less for the government -or behind the scenes forces- who send them off into questionable missions and wars.

What I'd like to know is what happened to all those conservatives who told me that I should have respect for Dubya simply because he was POTUS? That conviction seems to've flown the phuck out the window with the Commie, Muslim, Kenyan, abortion doctor we have in office now.

Hey, all these politicians are ****ed up...I'm still looking for "change".

Not really a fact... I admit, I'm not a history buff.. But I am pretty sure that a HUGE part of the war was the Loyalists and Revolutionists trying to convince that remaining 1/3 to join them.. its not that they didn't care, they were undecided.

As someone that payed attention in elementary school and enjoyed history class, most of what they are showing isn't new to me. That said, its a nice reminder - and cool to see them piece it all together. I like how they introduce some of the big figures in US History. The part about the settler chopping wood who turns out to be Lincoln sticks out. And a couple years later they show him rowing down the Mississippi on those make shift shipping rafts as the Steamboat heading up river passes him. Most of the transitions are pretty good, albeit some of them are a bit forced.

One thing I don't remember learning, I had no idea the huge role the Erie Canal played in the growth of NYC. I remember learning about the canal in school, but I don't remember them putting much emphasis on it.

Now, I do understand this is all told with a huge American slant - but thats one of the perks of the brillaint faux-neutrality stand we took during WWII. We waited, We won, We get to rewrite history. One of the things I wish I could do is take an American History class from an English perspective.

I am interested in history as much of reading when not going to school is on past history. Louisiana purchase made this country survive.

YES! I didn't watch the series yet because i was afraid it would be all ethnocentric fluff...I love that book and any other American history book that attacks from angles other than "whites kick ****ing ass."
