New York Giants co-owners Steve Tisch (c.), Jonathan Tisch (l.) and John Mara stress the importance of fund-raising efforts by both teams leading up to the 2014 Super Bowl.

Take our Poll

Super Idea

Is playing the Super Bowl outdoors in a cold-weather city a good idea?

Yes, the only thing that could make it better is if they play in a blizzard, like during the 'tuck rule' game in 2001 No, the biggest game of the year should not be played in adverse weather conditions Doesn't matter to me, I can't afford the tickets and will be watching from the couch

With the votes counted and the victory secured, Giants CEO John Mara revealed to those gathered at the New Meadowlands Stadium Wednesday why he and others involved in the 2014 Super Bowl bid trumpeted history as the touchstone of their pitch.

"Because we wanted to get the votes!" Mara said, pouncing on a question before Jets owner Woody Johnson could respond.

Now, both the Jets and Giants need the cash. For their part as hosts, the joint committee must raise $40 million over the next 3-1/2 years. Mara, whose voice was running down, explained that the two franchises would be lucky to break even on the deal that the bid committee proffered would bring in $550 million for the region.

"It's going to be the single biggest fund-raising that has been undertaken here," said Mark Lamping, the president and CEO of the New Meadowlands Stadium Company.

Mara noted franchises typically seek private contributions and package tickets to the game with stadium suites. Both the Giants and Jets have endured the challenge of selling personal seat licenses in their new home, which cost $1.6 billion to build.

The bid itself, Mara estimated, required around $1 million.

Debts incurred during construction can also be decreased by the Super Bowl's attraction. No naming rights have been purchased for the facility, but the organizations see the Super Bowl as an extra incentive for companies to invest in the "one-time opportunity."

"We're in very good shape." Mara said concerning the naming rights. "If it means waiting a year, we will, but I don't expect it to."

New York's Governor David Paterson noted that the demand to attend the game will not be dampened by weather or any other obstacle, sharing the passion of his friends who are football fans.

"They would risk mortar fire to get into the Super Bowl," Paterson said.

Lamping left the panel with a thought about fund-raising. He invited interested companies to come forward, "probably starting tomorrow," to make donations to the cause.

A few seats down on the dais, Jonathan Tisch, the Giants' treasurer and co-chairman of the bid committee, interjected to emphasize the immediacy of getting sponsors on board.

"No," Tisch said. "Starting today."

Super Bowl 2014 vote: While New York City celebrates, Super snub leaves Florida feeling cold

While Gov. Paterson (right), Jets coach Rex Ryan (center) and Jets owner Woody Johnson celebrate, Floridians are wondering what went wrong.

The folks in Florida are fair-weather football fans - as in 70 degrees and sunny at kickoff.

So it was no shock that the locals cried foul once the NFL awarded Super Bowl XLVIII to the Meadowlands, embracing Central Park frost over their beloved South Beach cool.

"How could they trade picture-perfect weather for freezing cold and snow?" a befuddled Octavio Cruz wondered Wednesday in Miami. "The fans and the players love it here."

Further north in sunny Tampa, real estate investor George Meyer agreed.

"It's bad for the players and it's bad for the fans," he said. "It will affect the game in ways that have nothing to do with the game, and nothing to do with the players."

Tampa and Miami were the losing bidders in Tuesday's selection of the $1.6 billion Giants/Jets stadium as home for the 2014 NFL title game - the first cold weather, outdoor Super Bowl.

The decision was harder to swallow in the Sunshine State than a glass of rancid orange juice.

"I think it was a conspiracy," said Cruz, a Dolphins season ticker holder. "They had Tampa and Miami running against each other, so basically they canceled out."

Tampa schoolteacher Logan Mabe thought the fix was in, too: "The NFL is based in New York, right? Let the baby have his bottle."

The off-season loss was most annoying to Florida businesses.

They rely on the invading Super Bowl hordes to book their hotels, bask on their beaches, fill their restaurants and swill their drinks for a week (or more) before the game.

And they wonder if New York in frigid February is up to the task.

"New York is the epicenter of the sports world in many ways," conceded Miami ESPN Deportes radio host Larry Milian. "But it certainly doesn't have the allure of South Beach and the climate in Miami."

The brain trusts of the Giants and Jets were already working to change that perception.

"We are going to have an incredible Super Bowl," Jets owner Woody Johnson said. "And we have 3-1/2 years to prepare for it."

Previous Tampa-hosted Super Bowls packed hotels 40 miles outside of town. In South Beach, Beacon Hotel manager Fritz Fandino said his place was booked solid for two weeks before the 2007 game.

"The game itself is just the culmination of the two weeks leading up to the big day," Fandino said. "And I think the weather in New York is really going to hinder the pregame events."

Sports marketing guru Brandon Steiner said the first-of-its-kind qualities of a possible "Snow Bowl" could prove a sales plus.

"It's a true football fan's Super Bowl," he said.

Backup QB Scenarios

Some options would include UFA Mark Brunell (who we would have to wait until July to sign), Jeff Garcia, Marc Bulger, UFA Daunte Culpepper, UFA Josh McCown, and Jamarcus Russell. Signing one decent veteran QB would mean we

Even if Sanchez is better than Clemens is, it certainly isn't by such a margin as to make backup quarterback a concern while taking for granted that starting quarterback isn't. O'Connell is going to be cut. Ainge hasn't shown us much, but O'Connell has never shown anybody anything, and at this point his draft position can basically be chalked up to Belichick whimsy considering a lot of people had the guy going undrafted at the time.

Kellen Clemens was undefeated in 2009.

FWIW

O'connell was the FAR superior QB at OTA's over Ainge and Clemens... by a mile...

Clemens threw like he was blindfolded with a blitz coming.... lol

O'Connell actually looked pretty decent and worked with the 2's a lot.

O'Connell in OTAs, Ainge in the preseason, Clemens in real life.

I think you're way off on O'Connell. Not that I think he's so great, but somebody in the Jets FO obviously likes him. They didn't give up a pick and keep him around all season as a 4th QB for no reason. Actually even if they did they'll probably keep him around just to avoid admitting the mistake.

Why do you think Ainge is any better? O'Connell actually looked pretty good his rookie camp and then not so good (horrid) last year's preseason. Some Pats fans actually expected them to try him over Cassel when Brady went down.

Mark Sanchez's participation still limited at Jets offseason workouts

By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

May 27, 2010, 1:18PM

jets-mark-sanchez-527jpgjpg-8c8332574c6f6de9_large.jpgChris Faytok/The Star-LedgerJets quarterback Mark Sanchez is working his way back from offseason knee surgery.Mark Sanchez took one rep in 11-on-11s in today's OTA session -- a handoff. The quarterback, coming off knee surgery earlier this offseason, didn't throw any passes in 11-on-11s.

The team has been cautious with Sanchez, who has maintained all along that his goal is to return to team drills by mini-camp. But he has been begging to get more reps each practice, so his first appearance we've seen in 11-on-11 drills this spring -- albeit a single play -- is a sign his recovery is still going well.

Sanchez did two series in 7-on-7s (same as last week). On the first, Shonn Greene had a drop in front of David Harris on coverage, then Sanchez connected with Jerricho Cotchery on an easy throw and catch over the middle.

Sanchez had a really nice second series with a succession of good throws: to David Clowney in back corner of end zone, to LaDainian Tomlinson in front of CB Darrelle Revis, and to Brad Smith first on a shallow cross then in the end zone. LB Bart Scott had a nice break-up on one of Sanchez's pass attempts.

Another player working his way back is Kris Jenkins. Last Thursday, the defensive tackle spent the entire session on the stationary bike. Today, Jenkins -- coming off season-ending knee surgery -- stretched with the team and participated in a portion of individual drills with the defensive linemen.

He spent the rest of his time on the stationary bike or jogging on the side.

Kellen Clemens opened 11-on-11 drills by hitting WR Braylon Edwards on comeback in front of CB Darrelle Revis.

Clemens had two nice completions later to Jerricho Cotchery, both beating rookie Kyle Wilson.

QB Kevin O'Connell hit WR Britt Davis for a really nice catch over CB Dwight Lowery (who should have been called for interference).

Rookie Vladimir Ducasse was still working with the first-team offensive line at LG. He also worked at RG with second-team offensive line.

Could be the end for K Clint St!tser. Rex Ryan suggested he might need to find a new job if he keeps missing -- and he missed from 48, 41 and 33 today. Nick Folk made from 49 and ended practice good from 41 yards.

DE Shaun Ellis spent most of practice on the stationary bike. TE Ben Hartsock also was on the bike and jogging on the side.

Rex Ryan talks shop with Magic Johnson over dinner

By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

rex-ryanjpg-43fd5ae2837184ef_large.jpgWilliam Perlman/The Star-LedgerRex Ryan talked with Magic Johnson about his relationship with Pat Riley and "The Lakers Way."Rex Ryan was talking about how spirited the Jets' practices have been this offseason, when he started referencing Magic Johnson -- and how the basketball great was recounting to him the caliber of practices the Dream Team had back in 1992.

So, wait, he and Magic Johnson are tight? Well, kind of. The Jets head coach, along with team owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum, took Magic Johnson out to dinner at Manhattan's Il Postino Italian restaurant recently.

Magic Johnson had been at the Mayweather-Mosley fight in Las Vegas earlier this spring, where a large Jets contingent also was, and they made arrangements to meet the next time he was in town and pick his brain.

Ryan says Sanchez is ahead of schedule

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 27, 2010 4:15 PM ET

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is recovering from knee surgery and not participating in team drills during OTAs, but coach Rex Ryan says Sanchez has made more progress in his recovery than the team expected by this point in the offseason.

"He's doing fantastic,'' Ryan said Thursday. "He's probably ahead of where we thought he'd be.''

While Sanchez recovers, Kellen Clemens is running the first-string offense in team drills. An overeager Sanchez actually participated in one play of 11-on-11 today, but Ryan got him off the field after a handoff.

"I was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa! What's he doing?''' Ryan said. "It's a run. Oh, OK. . . . Hand the ball off, and get out of the way.''

Sanchez is able to run on the Jets' grass practice field and expects to be 100 percent before the start of training camp.

watch out for UDFA Jeff Cumberland... matthew mulligan's security in a roster spot is tenuous at best.

Brunell likely to become a Jet, eventually

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 27, 2010 5:53 PM ET

In April there was mutual interest between the Jets and free agent quarterback Mark Brunell, but the Jets couldn't sign Brunell because of the "Final Eight Plan."

But the Final Eight restriction (which says the eight teams that played in the divisional round of the playoffs can only sign as many unrestricted free agents as they lose) is lifted on July 22. And Brunell is likely to become a Jet after that.

Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports that there's a feeling around the Jets that it's only a matter of time before Brunell signs with the team. The Jets and Brunell can't actually agree to a contract right now, but the team may have quietly assured Brunell that he'll get an offer on July 22, and Brunell may be willing to wait until then.

So by the time training camp starts, Brunell may be the backup to Mark Sanchez, and Kellen Clemens may be the odd man out. Clemens, a 2006 second-round pick, has said he'd like to go somewhere else because he'd like to compete for a starting job. According to Cimini, Clemens knows the writing is on the wall for him in New York.
