Integrity28
I spent the weekend going through the garage. To give you some context, we went from 1200 sq feet with a 2nd bedroom devoted entirely to storage out in Indiana... to 700 sq feet here in Boston. However, our unit does have a detached garage. When we moved here EVERYTHING except the daily essentials went into the garage and over the past 4 years we have whittled down the piles by making many donations to Goodwill. This past weekend I was able to crack into the boxes of CDs that my girlfriend owns. Mind you, I grew up on underground music in NY... and while I have a robust appreciation for all kinds of music, I never spent my money on it. (Except for Blues, that I buy.) My girl, she (I thought) listened to garbage... but low-and-behold I am in the process of adding tons of classic great music to my iTunes. This is huge. At a time where I have NO INTEREST in pissing away money re-buying a lot of the stuff I had on vinyl, cassette and CD... its like striking it rich with all sorts of new stuff. Some of what I have found: Aretha Franklin Beastie Boys Sublime Chili Peppers STP Steve Miller Gladys Knight Otis Redding Billie Holiday Dave Matthews Foo Fighters Everclear Here I was thinking it was all: Dance Club Mix Party 17 and Coldplay (who I can't stand). In some cases, I don't love everything by these artists... but there's a song here and a song there that I want... this is better than when I was a kid and I would find money in the pockets of my winter coat when we took them out of storage from the season before. Integrity28
Did ya happen to find yer yambags on your little hunt? No? well **** you then I don't know what a yambag is, or why I would have more than one. If I stumble upon anything conspicuous, I will immediately treat it as my yambag(s) and will report back to you for confirmation... as I can only assume that you are an expert in yambaggery and if I get this/these thing(s) in front of your face... you'll know exactly what to do with it/them. To each his own. Thats what I love about music. What I think is a masterpiece someone else might think is complete garbage. However, I will admit I do tend to judge people and what I think of them based off of their music taste..lol. That might sound weird, but you can generalize to an extent what someone's personality, interests or upbringing is based on their music taste...if ya know what I mean. I was just VERY into the punk rock / NYHC scene when I was younger and realized it was NO different than any other clique... in fact, it was MUCH more judgmental... ESPECIALLY if your musical interests ventured beyond the static list of "cool" bands that were accepted by and large by everyone in the "scene." Then I realized that they could go **** themselves, and I was going to listen to as much John Lee Hooker as I wanted. A bunch of people brought together by their "love" of a certain type of music... with a closed mind about what constitutes "good music." Just made no sense. So... like I always have... I continued to march to the beat of my own drummer... right into a different circle of friends. One that was diverse in its interests and wasn't a bunch of a-holes all trying to be the same person. Sounds like we had similar experiences with music. After my family moved from New York to Orlando, my brothers took to the surf/skate culture that is very popular in Florida. Being the youngest, I wanted to be exactly like my cool older brothers, so I natrually took to that scene as well. That scene is very much influenced by punk rock/hardcore/reggae bands. So like you said, all my friends were trying to be the same person with the same taste in music. However, I was always an athlete...so while my friends were skating after school or trying to get to the waves, I was often confinded to the gym or the field and becoming close with people very different then my crew. So all of a sudden, hip-hop, r&b, classic rock...all sorts of music was introduced to me that I'd never even given a chance and I liked it...so I started to take it step further and started finding influences of those bands that I was digging...and would just keep going further and further with expanding my horizons. So now my music library is all across the board. However, my roots are still my roots so punk/hardcore/reggae is probaly 75% of my library but I have what I think is the best of every genre out there at this point. JohnnyHector
Killing Time reference? Nice!!! Yes, even though it's a cover. I still remember my cousin taking me to the record store and buying The Brightside on cassette when it came out. I later swiped a copy on vinyl from Bleeker Bob's. This statement in and of itself is profound... when you consider both the experience of "acquiring" new music being a simple download these days... and the lawsuits perpetuated by the music industry against regular Joe's who "steal" music. Made me crack a nostalgic "**** the industry" smile.

Integrity28
Love me some Otis. Otis Redding might be the ONLY musical artist that my girlfriend turned me on to... she loved his music when I met her, and I've grown to love it since. Good stuff.
