Sharks QB Aaron Garcia sets arena football touchdown record in 64-56 victory at Chicago

Garcia passed for seven TDs to become AFL's all-time TD passer

On a record-setting night for Jacksonville Sharks quarterback Aaron Garcia, Sharks special teams scored two touchdowns and made another key play in Jacksonville's 64-56 road victory over the Chicago Rush on Friday night.

Garcia passed for seven touchdowns, five of them to Dallas Baker, and became the Arena Football League's all-time TD passer with his third of the game, to Jason Willis early in the third quarter. That gave him 932 for a 15-year AFL career, one more than Clint Dolezel. It gave the Sharks a 39-28 lead and completed a run of 19 unanswered points.

But by then, the Sharks (7-2) had scored two touchdowns without any help from Garcia. Irving Campbell recovered the opening kickoff in the end zone after kicker Paul Edinger had drilled the ball off the upright and put it up for grabs. Later in the first quarter, Jomo Wilson returned a Chicago kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown.Edinger, kicking in his first game after missing five with a leg injury, recovered his own kickoff in the fourth quarter to set up the Sharks' final touchdown. Again, he clanged the ball off the upright, and it bounced free until he recovered it at the Chicago 17. Three plays and a holding penalty later, Garcia hit Baker for a 19-yard touchdown. Slightly shaken after being tackled on his recovery, Edinger missed his fourth extra-point conversion.

"We planned to have a good night on special teams, but you can never count on two balls off the iron like that," Jacksonville coach Les Moss said. "He [Edinger] just has a knack for it.

"I'll trade four missed extra points anytime for two balls off the bar like that."

For the game, Garcia completed 27 of 45 passes for 304 yards and the seven touchdowns, a career total of 936. He was intercepted twice.

Baker caught 11 for 150 yards.

The Sharks, with the best record in the AFL, have a week off before playing in Orlando on June 18.
