(June 8) -- Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba, has confessed to killing a young Peruvian woman in his Lima hotel room last month, according to police.

Peru's chief police spokesman, Col. Abel Gamarra, told The Associated Press that the 22-year-old Dutch playboy admitted the slaying of Stephany Flores during questioning. The 21-year-old business student was found beaten to death, her neck snapped and her body wrapped in a bloody blanket in van der Sloot's hotel room last Wednesday. If convicted, the Dutchman could face 35 years in prison in Peru, although it is not clear if his sentence will be reduced by his reported confession.

While Peruvian police refused to say why van der Sloot killed the woman, the New York Post quotes La Republica newspaper as saying that authorities believe he flew into a rage after Flores looked at his laptop and saw that he was connected to Holloway's disappearance in 2005. "I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life," the paper quoted him telling officers. "She had no right. She was scared, we argued, she tried to escape and I grabbed her by the neck and hit her."

Police said the two met while playing poker at a casino in Peru's capital, and this weekend released video footage of the pair entering his room in the early hours of Saturday, May 30. Van der Sloot left with his bags four hours later. He then paid the hotel in advance for another two weeks' stay and requested that workers kept out of the room. Soon after, van der Sloot got in a taxi, and paid the driver $600 to take him to Chile.

He was arrested by Chilean authorities on Thursday, and deported to Peru, where he was paraded in front of the media wearing a bulletproof vest. He initially told police that he had nothing to do with Flores' slaying, although he did admit to meeting her.

There are now suspicions that van der Sloot -- the son of a former judge and attorney on Aruba -- may have staged his attempted getaway using money raised through extortion. On the day that he was arrested in Chile, he was charged in the U.S. with trying to procure $250,000 from Holloway's family in return for revealing the location of her body and describing how she died. American prosecutors say $15,000 was transferred into a Dutch bank account in his name on May 10, four days before he arrived in Peru.

Van der Sloot has long been the main suspect in the disappearance of Holloway, 18, who vanished while celebrating her high school graduation on the Dutch Caribbean island. He told investigators that he left her on a beach, drunk. However, in 2007, a Dutch television crime reporter secretly recording him saying that after Holloway passed out, he asked a friend to dump her body in the sea.

I'm pretty sure that the Peruvian police did not use the same gentle interrogation tactics as the Aruban police did. It took them only two days to get a confession out of this POS.

Maybe, or it could have been the hotel security footage involving both of them entering a room and only one leaving.

He has been pretty successful playing the "deny everything no matter what" card, so it would be surprising that he would just crumble and admit everything. No matter what, hopefully prison will allow him to experience the same kind of terror that his victims faced.

What boggles my mind is how natalie halloway's father, nor this girl's father have killed him yet.

I don't claim to be a tough guy by any stretch of the imagination, but, if you killed my kid, you'd be running from me for the rest of your life.

Without going into any details, a made guy once told someone in my family, 'Some things, you just gotta go to jail for'.

IMO the simple answer is that he ran out of money. Tacopina made some TV comments early on and seemed ready to defend him, but if the check doesn't clear this kid is on his own. Dad isn't around and he was extorting money to try and win a poker tournament? Doesn't sound like he had a sound financial plan. The "justice" he got the last time was a direct result of the amount of money spent.

I hope EY, LilBit and LilBit's girl enjoy the airquotes!

You'd better not have more than one kid, then, just in case . . .

I always wonder the same thing. For me it's oddly different with my sons. Don't get me wrong, you kill my boy I'm gonna get to you, but I also don;t worry about them nearly as much.

But my baby girls? Of which I have three. I'm not strong enough to do nothing. An accident would be hard enough to deal with, but murder one of my sweet baby girls? Especially a monster like this? I don;t know what I could do to not do it. I would either die myself from lack of sleep and anxiety or I would be taking a run at them. Nothing I could do to stop myself.

Absolutely agree with this. Maybe there's a chance you try to let the justice system do it's thing first, but if that doesn't work, I can't imagine not taking it into your own hands. If it were me, he would've been lucky to make it five minutes after getting off on those charges.

My point exactly. Im not even talking anger. I've done the anger thing and have the diploma to show Im good now. But the despair. How do you get it out of your mind? After my divorce and being unable to see my kids for 3 months abut killed me. I violated a restrianing order7 times. I also knew I would see them again. No idea how someone can be strong enough to not react to it and go at this monster. Beyond me.

I hear you...I could never understand how OJ was never put to pasture either by the Brown or Goldman family. I would have died trying to get at OJ.

I find it hard to believe this is only his second victim in five years. What explains the long break in his psychotic doosh career? He's clearly a loose cannon. What are the chances he killed only twice and got caught both times?

There's gotta be others. I'd at least make him find Natalee's remains before pounding this worthless dork into atoms.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. I'm surprised it took that long.

This girl's father is very rich and very well connected inside and outside of Peru. He's waiting to get him inside the jail. I'm surprised he didn't confess to killing Halloway to try and get put on trial for that in Aruba instead of Peru.

I agree. But Im also thinking maybe 35 years in a peruvian prison IS like forever.

Watch "Locked Up Abroad" or one of those other prison shows and you will realize that it will take a miracle for this douchebag to survive there for 35 years. Unless of course the jailhouse gang members decide that they enjoy using his ass as a jizz dumpster.

Story is now leaking out that he was only able to travel to Peru because of the FBI arranging the extortion sting. Apparently no one thought to grab his ass once he got the FBI money, giving him the time, money and opportunity to flee to Peru. Plus knowing the priorities of the FBI, sending a few agents to Aruba might have interrupted Diversity Quiliting Week at Quantico.

Solid work for the feds. If I was this Peruvian girl's dad, I'd want the FBI Director's head on a stick for this idiocy.

Really ? In Peru ?

From The Christian Science Monitor:

Van der Sloot could face between 15 and 30 years for murder, with the severity depending on how the prosecutor views the evidence. First degree murder would get him the maximum sentence and few opportunities for parole.

The five-year old disappearance of Holloway could play a big part in van der Sloot receiving the maximum sentence even though he was not charged in that case and has not confessed to her death, say legal experts.

Parole benefits?

A lesser charge could mean 15 years and two-for-one benefits in which each day served counts as two if the inmates works, studies, and is generally well-behaved.
