JerryK
I humbly admit my ignorance, but I know I have a lot of company. I caught the end of an NPR piece about the World Cup this morning. The guy said everyone OUTSIDE the USA is pumped about this event. It must be true, because I couldn't tell you if it's soccer, tennis, or sailing. Seems like I've heard 'World Cup' attached to each of those sports. ..but I suppose I could be excited. Is there a particular rivalry/story/drama attached to it this year? Bob
Is there a particular rivalry/story/drama attached to it this year? Well, we DO play England in our preliminary group. I always enjoy sticking it to those bastards. Not getting my hopes up, though.

Saturday, 1:30 PM, ABC. US vs. England. Arguably the biggest soccer game in our nation's history.

Vudu
Saturday, 1:30 PM, ABC. US vs. England. Arguably the biggest soccer game in our nation's history. It's like the Revolutionary War all over again. Hopefully we kick their arses a second time around! Take your tea and shove it LOL
JerryK
First question answered: It's soccer. Ok, so why is US v England significant this year? Have we never played in this tournament? Is this Beckham dude somehow part of it? I'll watch if there's something compelling about this year's contest. (even though it's soccer, and the big socks look like 80's leg warmers..and I can't get the song 'maniac' out of my head when I see game clips on tv)
Bruce Banner
Soccer is a great sport and the WC is the new olympics. The end of the cold war and removing the need for amateur status really killed the olympics. The players in the WC are pros but they are playing for free and there is a real spirit to the games. These guys will lose millions if they get injured and yet 99% of them go out and play harder than they have ever played in their lives. Its cool, and its fun to watch. Jetsfan80
Ok, so why is US v England significant this year? Have we never played in this tournament? Is this Beckham dude somehow part of it? We haven't played England in the World Cup in 60 years (we won the last time we met in 1950). And both are ranked top 15 in the world (US is 14th, England 8th). And no, Beckham did not make the English team. Good news for them.
