Biggest World Cup flop?

  1. 1. Biggest World Cup flop?

France

A disastrous 2-0 loss to Mexico was just the tip of the iceberg on France's issues. Yesterday, it was announced that striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home due to a dispute with the coach, and in response, the players refused to practice.

Now the French attempt to avoid making a complete embarrassment out of themselves against South Africa on Tuesday. In order to advance, they'll probably need to win by 3 goals and hope that Uruguay beats Mexico by a comfortable margin, an almost impossible circumstance.

This means that, after finishing 2nd overall in the 2006 World Cup, the French (ranked 6th in the FIFA rankings heading in) are headed home in complete disgrace.

African nations

One would have thought the host continent would have some form of advantage in the World Cup, right? Especially since all of Africa promised to rally around each participant, not just South Africa.

Nothing could have been further from the case in South Africa, as the "curse of the vuvuzelas" has hit all 6 African countries hard. After the Ivory Coast lost 3-1 to Brazil today, the Africanas fell to a record of 1 win, 4 draws, and 7 losses.

Cameroon and Nigeria are already mathematically eliminated, South Africa and Algeria appeared destined for last-place finishes in their groups, and Ivory Coast appears to be toast in the likely event Portugal beats North Korea tomorrow.

The one country that might be able to carry the torch, Ghana, has a precarious 1-point lead at the top of Group D. In addition, its not as if Ghana has played particularly inspiring.

In both of their 1st 2 matches, a player was sent off, and their only 2 goals in group play have come off penalty kicks. Despite having a 1-man advantage against Australia, they only managed a draw. A loss to Germany likely slips Ghana to 3rd and would mean that no African nations advance to the knockout stage.

So what's been the bigger flop? France or the Africanas?

People keep expecting blacks to take over soccer like they did basketball but speed isn't as important to soccer. The best soccer players would prolly be milers if they ran track, not 100m men. There really wasn't any reason to expect the african countries to do well. France was highly regarded because so many of their players are top pros. But their coach sucks and without Zidane they can't do anything. A coach who won't let Scorpios play for his team is obviously an idiot.

The French for now, but if England somehow doesn't advance to the knockout phase it will definitely be them. Everyone knew the French were in turmoil before the World Cup. The English were considered one of the top three or favorites to win the whole thing.

IrishJet'll probably be along soon to claim the French are the biggest waste of a space as that space should have been Ireland's.

I'd probably go with the Africans, though it's getting a little boring every world cup, with Blatter and co going "This is the world cup where the Africans break through", meanwhile even the Asian teams are winning games regularly..

England and Italy haven't exactly covered themselves in glory either, and now that c**t Terry's trying to stir up more s**t in the England camp.

.

France have done Fifa proud.

:face:

It's not just France, it's the vuvzelas, the half empty stadiums, the utterly ridiculous decisions made by referees, the general poor standard of play, a useless "roundest ball ever" that defies gravity making the world's best free takers look like donkeys, and Sepp Blatter saying this is a triumph. If things don't pick up, this could end up being one of the worst World Cups ever.

Someone should take football away from FIFA.

Unless the second round is classic this is definetly going to be the worst WC ever.

Kim Jong Il told the team he was killing their families anyway, so they have nothing left to play for.

Oh and their goalie defected, I think.

If true then good for him. Stupid , ignorant country run by imbecilic tyrants . They remind me of the movie "The Mouse that Roared. "

So we agree - Biggest waste of space - Sepp Blatter

It is picking up to be fair but so far it has been piss poor.

I agree that the groups stages are a little boring... warm ups. Wait til Brazil/Portugal part II (the finals?) or Argentina/Germany there are some good games brewing in the knock out phases.

as for waste of space it's gotta be the French. at least the african nations tried.

South Africa have as great a chance as they could have asked for here.

If they can get any help from Uruguay/Mexico (Where the two teams seemed to be going for it early on) they can get through by scoring some goals against a 10 man, completely dysfuntional French side.

2-0 now. Wow.

South Africa would have needed to win 4-0 and hoped that Mexico lost to Uruguay 2-0 (or 3-0 and 3-0). Close but no cigar. If only they hadn't imploded against Uruguay with that goalie red card, which resulted in a 3-0 loss.

I think the French players are being hypocrites. In 06 they rallied around Zidane when he got kicked out of the final game for attacking someone who made a joke about his sister. Now when a player tells the coach his mother is a whore they act like its no big deal.

Yeah, but is Zindane's sister a little loose?

And is Domanch's mom a whore?

FIFA deserves France screwing the pooch in spectacular fashion after they allowed France to advance past Ireland on a clear hand(or even 2).
