Already beset by contract disputes and a suspension, the Jets could have one less headache to worry about this fall.

Wide receiver Braylon Edwards is likely to escape a NFL suspension stemming from a punch he threw last October in a Cleveland nightclub, according to an Internet report last night.

Edwards, whose haymaker against a party promoter and close friend of LeBron James prompted the Browns to trade him to the Jets just days later, pleaded no contest in January and was given a 180-day suspended sentence and fined $1,000.

Edwards was nervous about landing a league suspension, too, as part of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's ongoing crackdown on player misbehavior, but Goodell appears to favor leniency in Edwards' case because Edwards was a first-time offender.

Edward's seeming escape would be good news for the Jets, who will be without fellow starting wideout Santonio Holmes for the first four regular-season games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Goodell's decision means that, even without Holmes, Mark Sanchez will have a capable receiving corps early in the season with Edwards available and Jerricho Cotchery assuming Holmes' role.

The likely absence of a suspension also would allow Edwards the chance at making an uninterrupted case for a new contract after the upcoming season.

Edwards, a one-time Pro Bowl selection with the Browns, signed a one-year, $1.6 million deal with the Jets as a restricted free agent this spring and will be in search of a long-term contract.

Edwards was something of a problem child in Cleveland but has been on his best behavior with the Jets, including showing up for all of Gang Green's voluntary offseason workouts and organized team activities (OTAs).

That dedication certainly caught the eye of coach Rex Ryan, who repeatedly praised Edwards as one of the most impressive and dedicated performers during OTAs and the recent mandatory mini-camp.
