To me, it's not even close. The Beatles...they changed the music world and Lennon and McCartney were two of your best song writers of any generation. Kind of tough finding a group that wrote and performed as they did. Oh for sure that there are other groups that write their own music, but I doubt very seriously as many hits as they had.

This. But, it's all a matter of taste in polls like this. There is no way to argue that any other group had as much impact, but people will vote for the band whose music they like.

Took the Beatles just because of what they evolved into.

Some of their earlier stuff doesn't interest me.

Sadly we never got to hear where they may have gone.

On the other hand, it's the earlier Zep stuff, especially 2,3,4 that interests me.

The Who are quite something too. What I'll call their early/middle era between Tommy and Who Are You were my favs. Quadrophenia, what a masterpiece.

Floyd?

Never got into the Syd Barrett stuff. Wish You Were Here, Animals and the Wall are real gems

I'll stick a vote in for Jethro Tull as maybe my 2nd fav. Ian Anderson through Benefit, Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, A Passion play and Living In The Past = brilliant stuff

I'm sorry but no Radiohead or Blur on this poll is preposterous.

These two groups did nothing in the terms of affecting the world of Rock as did The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, or The Who did. In fact they don't even approach the accomplishments of Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, or Sir Elton John.

Get a grip.

Britpop was awesome, and Blur has a huge influence in establishing that craze in the '90's. A lot of it comes down to how you define the word "greatest" - I mean The Beatles had the greatest impact in popular culture but I prefer the Rolling Stones so I'll select them. They are from my personal standpoint the greatest and Blur would be very high on my list too.

As Bob said a lot of it comes down to tatse. I mean, if I was asked right now who is a greater band - Kasabian or Blink 182 my answer would be Kasabian. Not because of their impact but because I prefer their music.

A lot of modern day crap has a major impact on the music industry, but I don't like it (some of I wouldn't even consider music) so I wouldn't even measure it in terms of "greatness".

I think the Beatles were the greatest band of all time but it's greatest rock band so I went with the Rolling Stones because they came in the early 60s and are still rocking today. Some of you may make fun of the old guys rocking but bands can't even stay together for a couple of years so I find it quite impressive. Honorable mention to Led Zeppelin.

Beatles vs. Rolling Stones is not even a debate for me. You have to sift thru the Beatles' catalog looking for a bad song, much in the way you have to sift thru the Stones' work to find the good ones. There's just no filler from the Beatles. Too many Stones' records are three good songs and a bunch of crap.

The good die young. I don't think Jesus would've caught on as big if he'd been rockin' the Temple Mount in his 60's. And the Beatles are more popular than Jesus - so there you have it.

Britpop is actually my favorite genre.

Oh please. Unless we're declaring the All-Starr Band to be fair play, Steel Wheels is no more relevant to this debate than Coldplay is. The Stones don't lose points for their bloated longevity any more than the Beatles get credit for self-destructing in their prime. You can crap on At the Max and pimp the bigger-than-Jesus mythos all you want, but if you're actually implying that the Beggars-Exile era was replete with filler, then I'd advise you to see an ENT. A thousand John-and-Pauls plinking at a thousand pianos for a thousand years couldn't come up with "Sway."

Well I really couldn't disagree more.

the beatles is greatest of all time..

but if the term ROCK is most important in this poll.. then i have to go with The WHo...

not only is there Tommy and Quadrophenia ( which i think is unbelivably amazing and my favorite over Tommy) BUT they also have Who's Next.. which is an incredible album.. not a bad song on it..

AND if you were looking for something more quirky.. try Who Sell Out..

AND dont forget .. this is a three piece band.. three pieces.. really that is it.. listen to their music.. three f'in pieces..

also.. dont underestimate the amazing bass playing of the late great John Entwistle...

I could go on about keith moon and of course Pete..

this is the best and greatest Rock band...

It's actually not that far off. They've put out 29 albums. That's just absurd, and some of them are pretty bad. The problem is that, like db said above, their best work is so above and beyond the majority of rock music historically that it doesn't even matter.

there's alot of good bands on this poll but they all owe their existence to the beatles.

Define existence. Because if any of the above includes the actual music they put out, Zep and the Stones owe way more to Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon than they do the boys from Liverpool.

You'd lose that one. Maiden over Priest.

I'd come out with some sort of ageist remark about the over 30s but I fall into that category.

While I never cared for Iron Maiden's music, their album art has always been epic! Gotta be in the top 5 if not 3 where album art is concerned!
