I hope this thread doesn't go bad...

NIGHT STALKER

Recommended Posts

I was thinking on this July 4th of two of the greatest founding fathers of this country...George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

So, as I was thinking about those two, it came across my mind, that other than these two, I've never met any white dudes (and let me remind you again, I've been around a long time), with those two surnames...Washington and Jefferson. Have any of you met some white folks with those two last names?

I'm old, but not quite old enough to have met George and Thomas...

Yes, two of our country's founders -two of the most driving forces for freedom in the history of the world- also happened to be two of the largest slave-holders in the most brutal slavery system the world has ever known.

Go figure.

Can we ever have a discussion without it getting spinning into another topic? I asked a ****ing question if you ever met any white people with the names Washington and Jefferson...I don't need a GD history lesson on slavery...I am very well aware of the history back then.

Not sure why you've never come across a white person with those names...

But the fact that George Washington had no children and over 300 slaves, and that Thomas Jefferson had over 600 slaves and no surviving (legitimate) sons, is probably a big reason both names became "black names" in the United States, don't you think?

Listen, this was not intended to get turned into a thread on slavery...it was a simple question that you still haven't answered, but have to remind the thread readers that they were slave owners...we get that.

You on the other hand, if were in their position back in those days wouldn't have owned slaves, right slats? You would have been a man of vision and set an example that slavery was wrong...tell me another western bud.

I'm just giving you the reason why those names are associated with blacks rather than whites today, that's all. It's pretty obvious if you ask me.

And yeah, no doubt I would've been a visionary.

For the exciting "hope this doesn't go bad" purposes of this thread, I've never met a white person named Washington or Jefferson. Does that help?

I don't think I've ever met anyone named Madison or Monroe, either, if you want to start another thought provoking thread.

I sorta remember a guy in school named Billy Madison.

And as far as the slavery thing goes, its sure easy to monday morning quarterback when you have a few hundred years of context and perspective. For the record, this country's beginnings were basically funded by tobacco farming. Yep, good old carcinogenic, stinky tobacco. I find judging the people of the distant past by current standards kind of silly.

By the standards of their day, the slavery system put in place in the colonies was the most barbaric the world had ever seen.

Ok, so you actually think that if Washington and Jefferson were illegitimately impregnating their slaves that the slaves would use and Washington and Jefferson would allow their last names to be used in naming these illegitimate babies?

No, that is not what I'm saying.

By most accounts, roughly 85% of American slaves took the surname of one of their owners when they were freed. So 300-600 black Washingtons and Jeffersons would probably lead to large black populations with those names over time, wouldn't you think?

ohhh. wow. sorry, I didn't understand your point. That Slavery was bad and not at all nice. Geez. I had no idea. Fot the record, you have just changed my mind forever on slavery. I now believe it was not a good thing to do to folks, enslaving them and all. Thank you for the history lesson. Jefferson and Washington should have been stoned to death (and not in a good way).

Now, about the Spanish inquisition and the Holocaust, they were a lot of fun for all involved, no? Or am I wrong this? Help me out.

Actually my point was that Washington and Jefferson had a lot more black namesakes than white ones, but people who hoped this thread wouldn't go bad made it into more than that.

I find when I comment in these things, people prefer reading into what I have to say rather than just reading what I'm saying.

Now, about the Spanish inquisition and the Holocaust, they were a lot of fun for all involved, no? Or am I wrong this? Help me out.

Not a big fan of those, either, but I was hoping we could stick to American atrocities on the 4th. :box:

Slaves took the last names of their owners.

Ever wonder why they are so many different shades of black people, as opposed to any other race? Jefferson and Washington were rumored to have had sexual relations with their slaves.

P.S. I've met whites with the names Washington and Jefferson, if that makes a difference.

A "PS" with a statement if that makes a difference. That was the entire point of my thread...slats had to put his own spin on it with freaking slavery. Believe me, if I wanted to inject slavery into my original post, I would have done that...I've never been one to mince words.

Pretty simple. Slats telling me slavery was awful was a "Thank You Captain Obvious" moment. So asking if the Holocaust and Spanish Inquisition were bad was a sarcastic way of saying, "Duh". Slats then followed up with "please stick to American atrocities" and I was about to make some Hiroshima and wounded knee jokes...but i thought that might be in poor taste.

I can see why they ask you all to avoid political/regligious talk. Happy 4th.

Yep, with a simple yes or no answer if you've ever met a white person with the name of Washington or Jefferson...but no, it's got to go every which way but the one intended. This is a great country, but the people in it just suck.
