AFJF
I went on my first camping trip this past weekend. Loved it. Hanging out in the elements with a river a less than a hundred feet away. Did some cliff diving, beer drinking, campfire cooking, rafting, etc... I'm buying all kinds of camping gear when I get back to England. Definitely adding it to the list of hobbies. Camping is fun, canoeing is funner cuz you can carry enough food with you that you don't have to suffer. But your enjoyment of camping always goes down after that first time when a bunch of creepy locals show up at your campfire and you find out the only thing in their backpack is beer. Glad to say none of that happened this time. Just some locals (Koreans) who kept to themselves and brought a pet rabbit. The thing was just hanging around the camp and letting people come up and pet him. Surprised nobody got drunk and tried to throw him on the fire. Lady Jet
Love camping. The whole experience. It's also nice to get the kids away from the electronics. We do let them bring their cellphones, however we also try to camp where there is no cellphone service. That usually bums them out at first. Bob
I still have all my camping gear, but getting the wife and kids out to use it has become impossible. I used to enjoy it a lot.
DHJF
Just got back from a long camping weekend in Greenport at the E.L.I. Kampgrounds. Had a great time despite the 90+ degree temps. http://www.easternlikampground.com/

Who the eff wants to sleep on the ground in a bag? You like bugs? You like critters? You like water with bugs and critters? You like not looking your best? You like inconvenince? Well then, camping is for you.

Garb
Gee. Who could have guessed that the Garb Fun Vacuum would piss all over this thread? I can't help it. I think people who enjoy camping have a mental disorder. I mean really - how's your back after a night in a tent? And, spare me the wimp camping winebago thing....I mean REAL camping in the great outdoors. Meh. I have camped several times and I will NEVER camp again. Ever. You could entice me with David Yurman jewlery, a coach bag and several spa treatments afterwards, and I would say NO WAY.
Garb
Nice pleasant commentary provided free of charge by grumpy Pat fan. Yup. LOL!! I feel very strongly about camping suckage. Plus, I am very tired and my boss is putting crazy demands on me. I'm grumpy and rebellious right now.
Maxman
I love camping, actually have two weekend trips planned one in a few weeks and another in August. Like Lady Jet said it is a good way to get away from the electronics for awhile. Camping near a river is the best. Kayaking or going on a canoe...just makes the experience so much more enjoyable. Sitting around the camp fire seems to take most of my worries away for awhile.

Who the eff wants to sleep on the ground in a bag? You like bugs? You like critters? You like water with bugs and critters? You like not looking your best? You like inconvenince? Well then, camping is for you. First off you bring a roll up pad to put under the sleeping bag. Secondly if you worked hard enough during the day you'll sleep easy. And thats part of the whole experience, setting a distance per day goal thats challenging so by the time you go to sleep it feels like the best sleep you've had in a long time. But I know, you hate camping. One more reason to like it.
Garb
Doesn't matter. She'll find something else to bitch about. I'm mostly bustin'.....but I do not camp any more and haven't in many years. I mean, really, which is better? - camping and sleeping in a tent in a musty sleeping bag or getting a massage as a spa, drinking some great wine and sleeping in great bed at a 5 star hotel? C'mon people. The canoeing, kayaking and hiking is awesome....then you go to the nice Inn you're staying at have dinner at a nice restaurant. What is so great about sleeping outside on dirt and pebbles and bugs? Oh, and the camp fire thing is cool...sit around, drink, laugh...marshmello's....blah, blah, blah.....and then you get home and all your clothes smell like sh*t. The Crusher
I love camping. Got me a big O' tent, got me a big'o air mattress, my Avalanche has the adaptor so i can run a fan. Got me Big'o screen room keep the mosquitto's from stealing my damn calories. I love me some damn smores, I really do. Kids love to swim, hike, and fetch daddy beer from the cooler. I like fishing and catching trout cleaning them and eating them, oh yes trout will be caught and will be eating. Got some fancy hiking boots too, don;t like those so much, come with too many expectations, I do like smores though.

Thor99
Sitting around the camp fire seems to take most of my worries away for awhile. I did some field training back when I was a cop that most AF folks never get to do. A few ruck marches and some field time but nothing extensive and nothing that permitted me to drink a few beers with my buddies. I prefer camping with beer. Integrity28
What about smores? What about beer? 2 of my favorite things ever. We vacation on a lake in Maine every year for 20+ years... and beer, lobster and smores are staples on our menu.

We use a 8 foot tall tent with cots and always go to campgrounds with wifi, hot showers etc. Our tent also has electrical outlets in it. We are still roughing it, cooking on a fire, singing songs to the ipod etc. Camping is awesome.

Yes staying in a 5 star hotel is nicer than camping. But financially these things aren't equal. I can go camping a few weekends over the summer. Can't stay at 5 star hotels quite as much. Although I never did the spa thing, Thor raves about GOB's facials.

Camping is relatively cheap. 5 star hotels are not. When you have a family - finances matter more than ever. Plus, kids think camping is fun. Brain dead little phuckers. I do not have kids....but if I did, the only camping they would be doing is going to Summer Camp in Maine for two weeks and hope that someone who enjoys camping takes pity on them because one thing is for sure - Momma don't camp. I'd rather stay home with no air conditioning on a day like today than camp. Bleh.

Air mattresses are good too. Depends on the ground underneath. If its a grassy tent site then its good. Some tent sites are gravel etc. Usually means disaster for the mattress. Internet access is a requirement when camping. Next month we are going to Coeur D Alaine camping and Silverwood. It took some searching but I found a campground there with wifi.
