SJ Reviews: 'A Winters Bone'...Taught suspense of family survival (3 1/2)

'A Winters Bone' is a Indie that follows a 17 year old girl in search a bail skipping father. It was the Grand Jury winner at Sundance.

Set in current day mountains of West Virginia, the film carries a dreary, stark backdrop of poverty and cultural protectionism. A father with disabled wife and a 6 ,12 and 17 year old (who does all the work), has skipped bail. He put the family shack and more important, land , up for collateral. We find out in 1st few frames, that the family will homeless if he doesnt appear in a week. He can appear in person, or proof of his death will be sufficient.

Here we have the quest to find her father to save the family.

She encounters back woods crime syndicates, meth labs, and everything that can stand in her way of finding her father.

This 17 year old has foresaken her dreams of 'getting out' to save her family. Its a glorious tale of love and honor and the inheritent gene we all carry to want out loved ones to succeed.

the closest one is about a half hour away, but I'd have to check if they are showing this particular film

Do you know what happened with "The Killer In Me" and "Cyrus"? Neither were in regular theaters. Both were reviewed as if they were mainstream films. I don't get it.

cyrus is opening this coming weekend across rest of US in Indie theaters..

maybe it will be in your theater..
