SouthernJet
Suffer These Crimes in Oakland? Don't Call the Cops Dozens of layoffs effective at midnight, barring last minute deal Oakland's police chief is making some dire claims about what his force will and will not respond to if layoffs go as planned. Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line. Some 80 officers were to be let go at midnight last night if a last-minute deal was not reached. That's about ten percent of the work force. "I came her e to build an organization, not downsize one," said Batts, who was given the top job in October. That deadline has been extended to 5 p.m. Tuesday. Here's a partial list: burglary theft embezzlement grand theft grand theft:dog identity theft false information to peace officer required to register as sex or arson offender dump waste or offensive matter discard appliance with lock loud music possess forged notes pass fictitious check obtain money by false voucher fraudulent use of access cards stolen license plate embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400) extortion attempted extortion false personification of other injure telephone/ power line interfere with power line unauthorized cable tv connection vandalism administer/expose poison to another's
Vudu
Crazy. Oakland is a weird town. That's the same town where a cop is allowed to shoot unarmed man in the back, say he "meant" to go for his tazer and get off with a slap on the wrist for murder. Only in Oakland CA. How can you not call the cops for burglary/theft, extortions or report a sex offender?
jgb
best part is oakland also has very strict gun laws. but i thought the argument for gun laws was that we are better off with all guns in the hands of the professionals (i.e. the police) - how does that work out when they won't show up if someone is poisoning me or buglarizing my house? ironic that this argument is advanced by those who tend to hate the police and complain whenever the police have to do the dirty part of their jobs. moral of the story: some people simply don't want others to be able to defend themselves. The Gun Of Bavaria
In short, yes to a degree. What you have to keep in mind is that this means that the cops won't "come to your house to take a report", not that they won't investigate it and "let it slide". All this means is that from now on, you'll have to go to a station/precinct to file those forms of reports. We're about to lay off 21 officers, or 1/3 of my department come September, and will be in a similar boat where mere "reports" such as those, will have to be filed in person, at the front desk. The officers on the street will simply be too busy to be taking "Report Runs". Now if you call and say that someone is breaking into your home as we speak, in-progress stuff like that, they'll still respond. But when you come home to find your house broken into, or get mail letting you know someone got your ID and charged your card up $1000, walk your happy ass to the station. Keep in mind though, that at many places, mine included, we in the Detective Bureau do not investigate every report and that the reports are "pruned" for assignment. If there's not a solid chance to solve it, or there isn't a solid lead, it probably won't be assigned and will go to "die". That's just the way it is these days. Gotta pick and choose what to use resources on. It's just like any business...not "Everything" can be a priority.

Vudu
If your talking about the Officer Mehserle case he was convicted of Manslaughter. INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER for shooting an unarmed man in the back, even though it was caught on video? 2-4 years is a slap on the f-cking wrist. But I already know your 'radical' views when it comes to certain 'situations' and certain types of people so arguing with you is redundant. Bugg
With the spread of Compstat-type crime prevention tactics, what is also going on is rampant (and often unjustified)dowgrading of crime. Which allows police to lessen coverage and cut personnel because CRIME IS DOWN,at least on paper. Which is how we now occasionally have reports of 2-bullet suicides and reports of all kinds of mayhem like rape and robbery suddenly missing. Commanders find themselves evaluated on the ability to keep the numbers down, so the nonsense done to keep felony crime numbers down ahs gotten ridiculous. No on in NYC except the Village Voice is covering this story because Bloomberg owns a media company and no reporter wants to be blackballed.
