SHARKS ADD QUARTERBACK TO ROSTER

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce quarterback Omar Jacobs has been added to the 2011 roster.

Jacobs (6’4, 225, Bowling Green State) joins the Sharks after several accomplished seasons at quarterback in the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA), a minor league indoor football league. In two seasons, Jacobs completed 383-of-672 passes (57%) for nearly 4,000 yards and 109 touchdowns. In 2008, Jacobs was named league Most Valuable Player and led his team to a league championship being named the championship MVP.

Jacobs, a Del Ray Beach, FL native, was a second-team All-Florida selection and Palm Beach County Player of the Year. He was recruited to Bowling Green State University out of Atlantic High School by current Gator head coach Urban Meyer.

Jacobs saw limited action as a true freshman accounting for six total touchdowns (four passing, two rushing). Jacobs’ impact surfaced as a sophomore in 2004 where he completed over 4,000 yards passing with 41 touchdowns. He finished the season as one of the nations top passers, third best in pass completions (309) and passing yards (4,002), the nations most touchdown passes and best touchdown-to-interception ration. As a junior, Jacobs was named a preseason 2nd team All-American and a preseason candidate for the Maxwell, Walter Camp and Heisman trophies. He was a semi-finalist for the Davey O’Brien award in 2005, but his productivity was reduced due to an injury to his shoulder.

Jacobs opted to forego his senior season to enter the 2006 NFL draft. He left as Bowling Green State’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns (71) and third all-time in passing yards (6,938). He still holds the sixth best passer rating in NCAA history (162.5).

Drafted in the fifth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacobs was released after training camp and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad where he spent the 2006 NFL season. In 2007, Jacobs signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and was allocated to NFL Europe with the Berlin Thunder. An injury forced him to miss the entire preseason and was then released. Jacobs signed with the Florence Phantoms (AIFA) in 2008 and most recently played with the San Jose Wolves (AIFA) in 2010.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce wide receiver Jamarko Simmons has been added to the 2011 roster.

Simmons (6’4, 235, Western Michigan) joins the Sharks for his rookie season in the Arena Football League. A standout at Western Michigan, Simmons is heralded as one of the school’s all-time greats.

A four-year starter, the former Bronco started 41-of-47 games he saw action. As a senior, Simmons became the first receiver in Western Michigan history to catch more than 100 passes in a season after pulling in 104 passes for 7 touchdowns. He also set a new mark for receiving yards in a season with 1,267. Simmons also broke the school record for career receptions with 260, breaking Greg Jennings mark by 22 catches.

A converted wide receiver, Simmons was recruited to Western Michigan from Central High School in Flint, Michigan where he was a running back. Regarded as one of the Top 25 Players in Michigan, he was named to the All-State Team by the Detroit Free Press in 2003.

Simmons joined Greg Jennings as he spent time in camp with the Green Bay Packers in 2009 as an undrafted free agent. He choose Green Bay over similar offers from Baltimore, Cleveland and others because of his relationship with Jennings.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce the acquisition of defensive back and wide receiver LaRoche Jackson.

Jackson (5’11, 190, Clark Atlanta University) joins the Sharks with playing experience in two indoor leagues and the Canadian Football League (CFL). A member of the Carolina Speed (AIFA) and Bloomington Extreme (IFL), Jackson brings previous indoor experience for his rookie season in the Arena Football League.

Jackson (first name pronounced La-raw-chee), a native of Irwinton, Georgia was nominated for the Indoor Football League’s Most Valuable Player award after making 41.5 defensive tackles, eight interceptions and returning two kickoffs for touchdowns with the Bloomington Extreme. His performance earned him a roster spot with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats as an import defensive back.

New Franchises Spark Division Alignment for 2011 Season

TULSA - The Arena Football League has announced new division alignments for the 2011 season. New franchises will highlight natural rivalries in all four divisions. The eighteen teams are split into the National and American Conference. The National Conference houses the West Division and Central Division. The American Conference divides into the South Division and East Division.

“This divisional alignment allows teams to revive some of their old rivalries while creating some natural new ones,” Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz said. “We are very excited about the 2011 Arena Football season.”

During the 18 game schedule, each team will play every opponent in their respective division twice. Teams will also play the opponents in their conference once.

Aaron Garcia's separated shoulder will keep him out of Saturday's Jacksonville Sharks game and could sideline him for another game or two after that.

Bernard Morris will start at quarterback against the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings on Saturday night. Morris steered the Sharks to a 49-47 victory over Tampa Bay last Saturday, passing for four touchdowns and running for another after Garcia left the game in the first quarter.

Morris was named the Arena Football League's playmaker of the week.

As Morris' backup, the Sharks signed 17-year arena football veteran Todd Hammel, who played last year for the Milwaukee Iron in af2 and is coaching high school football in Texas.

At 43, Hammel is 4 years older than Garcia. Hammel said he's treating his temporary gig as a mini-vacation from coaching.

Garcia said his return would probably come down to a "coaching decision."

"I'm resigned to the fact that it's going to hurt," Garcia said Wednesday. "An injury like this would take about four weeks to heal up, and we don't have that kind of time."

After Saturday's road game, the Sharks (10-4) finish the regular season July 30 at home against Spokane. Jacksonville is trying to retain the No. 1 seed in the American Conference and home-field advantage in the first two playoff rounds.

Wide receiver-kick returner Jomo Wilson, who missed the Tampa Bay game, didn't practice Wednesday because of assorted injuries.

"We have to get him right," Moss said, adding that Wilson probably could play but the Sharks want him healthy for their playoff run.

Packing 'em in

The Sharks' season-high home crowd of 13,011 on Saturday night was the largest of the weekend in the AFL.

Jacksonville is neck and neck with Arizona for third in attendance behind Tampa Bay and Orlando.

Bossier-Shreveport, last in attendance with an average of 3,550 in 12,500-seat CenturyTel Center, gave away 5,000 tickets to Saturday's game against the Sharks.

"I hope they get as many people in there as they can," Moss said. "These guys want to play in front of people."

Quarterback carousel

The BattleWings have had a revolving door of quarterbacks this season.

Saturday's starter, Jimmy Welker, is a former backup at LSU and the fifth to play the position.

He follows Raymond Philyaw, Kinsmon Lancaster, Gary Cooper (who has left the team) and wide receiver Randy Hymes. Philyaw, an AFL veteran, went down for the season with a knee injury in the eighth game.

Playoff update

If the Sharks win their final two games, they would not only host a first-round playoff game, on Friday, Aug. 6, they would also be in position to host the American Conference final, too, on Thursday, Aug. 12.

But if they were to finish behind Tampa Bay in the South Division, they would have to play in Tulsa on Aug. 7. Tulsa, having clinched the Southwest Division, is the only conference team assured of hosting a first-round game.

With two more wins and a 12-4 record, the Sharks could still tie Spokane for the best overall record and be in a position to host the Arena Bowl on Aug. 20.

But for that to happen, Spokane (12-2) would have to lose at home to Chicago today, then lose to the Sharks by 11 points or more on July 30 (Spokane won the first match 67-57).

With 6-8 records, Orlando, Alabama and Oklahoma City all have a shot at the final playoff berth in the American Conference. Oklahoma City plays at Orlando today. Alabama is at Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Catching on

With Wilson out and Morris at quarterback, defensive back Dee Webb became the No. 4 receiver against Tampa Bay and caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter when fellow former Florida Gator Dallas Baker briefly left the game with an injury.

Webb said it was his first touchdown reception since his days at White High School. He reached over the wall to grab Morris' pass.

"Once I saw that ball coming, there was no denying me coming down with that one," Webb said.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce kicker Marco Capozzoli joins the Sharks for 2011.

Capozzoli (6’1, 210, Montclair State) joins the Sharks for a sophomore season in the Arena Football League. He signed as a rookie to the Tulsa Talons on June 10, 2010 playing in five regular season games and one playoff game.

Capozzoli started his professional career by connecting on all nine of his extra points in a 69-51 victory over the Dallas Vigilantes. He finished the season with a perfect 1-for-1 on feild goal attempts and 38-of-44 extra point kicks.

Capozzoli, an NJAC Special Teams Player of the Year and a First-Team All-Region selection by D3Football.com, helped Montclair State captured its 18th Conference Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Capozzoli led the conference in PAT percentage (.972), while ranking third in kick scoring per game (5.7 points). He connected on 10-of-15 field goal attempts, and a league-best 35-of-36 PATs. Capozzoli is the first kicker in MSU history to connect on three 40-yard attempts in a game as he hit from 42, 44 and career-best 47 yards in the rain.

The left-footed Capozzoli was 31-of-49 in field goals for his career and successfully converted 92-of-99 point-after chances for a total of 185 points. He ranks third on the all-time field goal list at Montclair State and he is second in career extrapoints and ninth in points scored.

2010 AFL Defensive Player of the Year DL Gabe Nyenhuis, Former Sabercat WR Burl Toler, Four Others Added

SAN JOSE – The San Jose SaberCats today announced the assignment of 2010 AFL Defensive Player of the Year DL Gabe Nyenhuis, WR Burl Toler, DL Adam Huebner, FB/LB Chad Cook, WR Chidozie Nwokocha and OL/DL Jason Jones, by the league office. Per team policy, terms were not disclosed.

DL GABE NYENHUIS

Nyenhuis (6-3, 265) enters his fourth year in the AFL and first with the SaberCats. For his career, he has totaled 88 tackles, 29.5 for loss, 28 sacks, 16 forced fumbles and seven passes defensed in 41 games. In 2010, Nyenhuis led the league in sacks (15.5), tackles for loss (13.0) and forced fumbles (9) en route to earning the AFL’s highest defensive honor for the Tulsa Talons.

“Bringing in a player of Gabe’s caliber is tremendous for us,” Head Coach Darren Arbet said. “He is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and will provide us a dominant force on the defensive line that offenses will have to account for.”

A two-time All-Arena selection as a defensive lineman, Nyenhuis spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Soul (2007-08), helping them to an ArenaBowl championship in 2008 against the SaberCats. During their championship run, Nyenhuis led the team in sacks (9.5), tackles for loss (12.5) and forced fumbles (5). He also led the team with two sacks while forcing a fumble in the 2008 postseason.

WR BURL TOLER

A former California Golden Bear, Toler (6-2, 200) spent the 2008 offseason with the Washington Redskins after signing with San Jose in 2008. Prior to signing with the SaberCats, Toler served his first stint with the Redskins in 2007 after spending time with the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. He originally signed with the SaberCats in 2007 before joining the Centurions. Undrafted out of California, Toler was originally signed by the Oakland Raiders in 2006.

“We’ve liked what we’ve seen from Burl in the past and so have many coaches in the NFL ranks,” Arbet said. “He is a diligent worker and a great athlete who will add experience to our young receiving corps moving forward.”

A walk-on at California, Toler finished with 69 receptions for 873 yards and four touchdowns. His best season came in 2003 when he caught 48 passes for 609 yards and three touchdowns. A native of Berkeley, CA, Toler attended Bishop O’Dowd High School (CA) helping his team to two league titles and a North Coast Section championship, earning first team all-league on offense and defense his senior year. Toler also lettered four years in track, attending the League of Champions meet his final three years.

DL ADAM HUEBNER

Huebner (6-4, 300) spent his rookie season alongside fellow SaberCat DL Gabe Nyenhuis in 2010 with the Tulsa. In his lone season with the Talons, Huebner finished with 14 tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.

“Adam was a part of the best defensive line in the AFL last season, playing with the best pass rusher in the league in Gabe Nyenhuis,” Arbet said. “He’ll bring pressure on opposing quarterbacks this coming season after enjoying a solid year with the Talons in 2010.”

Prior to transferring to Purdue as a sophomore, Huebner played in 11 games as a redshirt freshman at Indiana State in 2003 where he had 23 tackles and two sacks.

FB/LB CHAD COOK

Cook (6-1, 265) started his rookie season with the Tampa Bay Storm before being signed by the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. For Oklahoma, he ran the ball 45 times for 140 yards and eight touchdowns, adding 14 receptions for 105 yards and one touchdown. On defense, he had eight tackles combined between the two teams.

“Chad is a hard-nosed runner who can play on both sides of the ball,” Arbet said. “He’s a load at his size who will be able to punish defenses up the middle.”

During his four year career at Murray State, Cook totaled 2,095 rushing yards on 457 attempts for 24 touchdowns, leading the team in rushing as a sophomore (834) and a junior (692) for the Racers. He also caught 24 passes for 185 yards.

WR CHIDOZIE NWOKOCHA

Prior to joining the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League in 2010, Nwokocha (6-0, 200) played two seasons at Ohio (2006-07). In 26 games for the Bobcats, he totaled 45 catches for 562 yards and one touchdown. Nwokocha transferred to Ohio after spending two seasons at Sacramento City College where he was an All-Nor Cal Conference pick both seasons, totaling 119 catches for 1,665 yards and 14 touchdowns in his junior college career.

“Chidozie is a great addition to our team who brings more athleticism to our squad,” Arbet said. “Along with our current wideouts we have the makings of a talented receiving corps as we make our way towards the 2011 season.”

A native of Elk Grove, CA, Nwokocha attended Laguna Creek High School (CA), earning honorable mention all-city selection honors while helping the Cardinals to a Delta League Championship and the state playoffs.

OL/DL JASON JONES

Jones (6-4, 345) played his first season in the AFL with the Cleveland Gladiators in 2010. He totaled three tackles in three games for the Gladiators despite being limited by injuries during the 2010 season.

“Jason can play both ways and is very athletic for his size. He will be a solid contributor for us in the trenches in 2011.” Arbet said.

After transferring from Pasadena Community College in 1999 to Illinois State, Jones then transferred to Idaho where he played two seasons for the Vandals.

Rowley returns to Spokane

The Spokane Shock announced today that QB Kyle Rowley will return to Spokane for the 2011 season

Rowley is the seventh member of the 2010 ArenaBowl Champion roster to re-sign with the team. Last season, Rowley set the single season franchise record for passing yards (4,428) and passing touchdowns (100). In Spokane’s 69-57 win over the Tampa Bay Storm in the ArenaBowl, Rowley was selected as the game’s MVP after he completed 75% of his passes for 237 yards with nine passing touchdowns (an ArenaBowl record).

“I don’t think there is a better quarterback in the league than Kyle Rowley,” Head Coach Rob Keefe explained. “This is the ultimate team sport and you need a quarterback who has good leadership qualities, understands the game and is willing to do whatever it takes to win a game. We have that now with Kyle Rowley.”

Although Rowley did field offers from other teams, ultimately it was clear that Spokane was the best place for him to continue finding success in his career.

“I really appreciate the way that the Shock and Coach Keefe handle their operations. They are all about honesty and telling the hard truth if they have to,” Rowley explained. “I believe this is the best place to play for and to win Championships. Winning championships is the focus of the ownership all the way down to the Coaches, the players and everyone involved.”

Despite all of Rowley’s accomplishments in 2010, his hunger for another Championship has only grown.

“I know that we are going to have go back out and earn respect all over again,” Rowley explained. “Even though we won the whole thing we need to find a way to learn from our mistakes. A lot of people like to look back at Championship seasons and assume that it is perfect but it wasn’t. We could have won those games by more and that’s my focus for the upcoming season.”

ANOTHER DEFENSIVE BACK ADDED TO SHARKS

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce defensive back and wide receiver Scorpio Babers join the Sharks in 2011.

Babers (6’0, 196, Sam Houston) joins the Sharks after spending time with both the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers. Babers originally attended the Dolphins’ May 2008 minicamp on a tryout basis and was signed to a contract on May 5. He was waived on July 30 in favor of cornerback Chris Roberson.

Babers was picked up by the Green Bay Packers August 7, 2008 to take the vacancy left by Brett Favre. Babers appeared in three preseason games and recorded three tackles. He was waived during final cuts. Babers was then re-signed to the Dolphins’ practice squad.

A three-letter winner, Babers played three seasons (2003-2004, 2006) at Sam Houston State. As a senior, he was an honorable mention All-Southland Conference after recording 46 tackles, an interception and eight pass deflections. He finished his collegiate career with 67 (37 solo) career tackles, three tackles for a loss.

Babers was a prep All-District 16-2A and team “Most Valuable Player” for Italy, Texas High school. He played both quarterback and cornerback in high school and also lettered in basketball and track and field.

Historic AFL 18-Game Schedule Kicks Off on March 11, 2011

Regular Season Play Spans Over 20 Weeks

TULSA, Okla. – The Arena Football League 2011 Season will kick off the second weekend of March. This is the first season the AFL will be playing with an 18-game regular season schedule, making it the longest season in AFL history.

Week 1 includes seven games stretched over a four day period starting on Friday, March 11, 2011. The first game of the season will be two new teams and in-state rivals Philadelphia Soul at Pittsburgh Power with kickoff time at 7 p.m. CST.

The AFL’s reigning 2010 ArenaBowl Champions, the Spokane Shock, will open their regular season by playing at the San Jose SaberCats, wrapping up the first night of the 2011 AFL Season.

The NFL Network will once again broadcast the Friday Night Game of the Week. The NFL Network Schedule will be released shortly.

SHARKS ADD FORMER SPARTAN

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce the acquisition of defensive back Ross Weaver.

Weaver (6’1, 215, Michigan State) joins the Sharks for his rookie season in the Arena Football League. A four-year letterman at Michigan State, Weaver saw action in 41 games - 17 for starts. He tallied 86 career tackles (65 solo) including one sack as a Spartan. He also broke up 12 passes. forced three fumbles and two interceptions. In his final game in the 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl, Weaver had a career best nine tackles and added an interception and a forced fumble.

Undrafted, Weaver signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins on April 30, 2010 as a safety. He was released September 4th. Two days later, Weaver was signed to the Seattle Seahawks practice squad to be released shortly after. Weaver was invited to private work outs with both the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants in October.

As a high school student in Southfield, MI, Weaver was ranked as the 48th best safety by Rivals.com. Named to the Prep Football Report’s All-Midwest Team and listed amoung the Midwest’s top 75 prospects, the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press ranked Weaver as one of the top 15 seniors in the state of Michigan. Weaver also competed as a track star boasting a 10.68 second 100 yard dash.

LOCAL LINEBACKER ADDED TO SHARKS

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce the addition of linebacker and wide receiver Charles Hunt Jr.

Hunt (6’4, 225 lbs, Florida State) will line up at jack linebacker for the Sharks in 2011. Hunt played for the Utah Saints and Wyoming Cavalry in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Both teams play in the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA), a minor league indoor football league.

Hunt, son of Florida State All-American Charles Hunt Sr, grew up in Jacksonville, FL. He attended Episcopal High School where Hunt Sr. is currently a football coach.

HURRICANE MORSE HEADS TO JACKSONVILLE

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce the addition of offensive and defensive lineman Derrick Morse to the 2011 roster.

Morse (6’5, 310, Miami) heads to Jacksonville after a stint in both the NFL and UFL after a standout career at the University of Miami (FL). Morse was recently released from contract with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL. Prior to being with the Mountain Lions, Morse saw action in four preseason games with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free-agent in 2008.

Starting 29 games in his five-year collegiate career, Morse was an All-ACC honorable mention as well as being the recipient of coach-given awards for commitment, leadership and consistency. Morse played in three consecutive bowl games, including a 27-10 victory over the Florida Gators in the 2004 Peach Bowl.

Morse was a consensus choice as one of the finest offensive linemen in Florida out of Estero High School in south Florida. As a junior in 2001, recorded 74 pancake blocks in a 10-game season. He was rated the 38th best offensive lineman in the country by Allen Wallace’s SuperPrep and a SuperPrep All-American. Morse was rated a Top 30 prospect by SuperPrep, Tom Lemming’s Prep Football Report and the Orlando Sentinel Florida Top 100. He was also third-team selection of the Fox Sports Net All-South Team.

Chicago – The Chicago Rush of the Arena Football League have signed WR/DB Vic Hall (5’9, 185, Virginia) for the 2011 season. He joins the Rush after spending time in training camp this year with both the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets.

“There are very few players that are as legitimate a threat on offense, defense and special teams as Vic is,” said Rush head coach Bob McMillen. “We expect that he will more than live up to his nickname of “Do-It-All” Vic Hall for the Rush.”

Following a brilliant high school career during which he set Virginia state offensive yardage records and was named first-team All-State three times at quarterback, the Cavaliers’ coaching staff decided to maximize the impact of Hall’s superior athletic skills, by utilizing him in all three phases of the game at Virginia. In his first two seasons, Hall played 25 games, including all 13 starts in 2007, at cornerback. He also excelled on special teams in both coverage and as a punt returner. As a testament to his leadership, Hall was named team captain in 2008 and started 11 games at cornerback and one at quarterback, recording 59 tackles and two interceptions. His special teams’ duties expanded to encompass both punt and kick returns.

The 2009 season began with a new offensive coordinator and a return to offense with Hall being employed to great effect as both a running back and wide receiver, compiling 20 rushing attempts and 24 receptions for 376 combined yards. He continued to display “Swiss army knife” versatility with exceptional play at cornerback and as the team’s primary return option.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce the addition of defensive lineman Michael Hancock to the 2011 roster.

Hancock (6’7, 260, Florida Atlantic) comes to the Sharks after being invited to training camp with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL. He was worked out privately twice by the Miami Dolphins and once with the New Orleans Saints. Hancock will play his rookie season in the AFL with the Sharks.

A resident of Parkland, FL, Hancock attended Florida Atlantic University (FAU) where he walked on to the football team in 2004 and finished his collegiate football career as a full-scholarship starter on the defensive line in 2008. His exemplary character, commitment and courage earned him a nomination for the Rudy Award, named after the former Notre Dame walk on of movie fame.

Hancock redshirted in 2004 and was moved to tight end in 2005 due to injuries where he saw action in seven games. Seeing playing time in special teams and as a defensive end, Hancock registered 21 tackles (11 solo), three tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks in 19 games (1 start) as a redshirt-sophomore and junior. As a redshirt-senior, he accumulated 36 tackles, seven for loss, and six sacks. He also returned a fumble recovery 34 yards.

Hancock attended Coral Springs Christian High School in Coral Springs, FL where he was named a two-time all-conference member and the team’s leading tackler. Hancock was a three-sport athlete competing in football, baseball and track. He finished sixth place in the state track meet in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 110 hurdles.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA - The Jacksonville Sharks announce linebacker Tyrell Sales has been added to the roster for the upcoming 2011 season.

Sales (6’2, 247, Penn State) joins the Sharks after spending time with the Montreal Allouttes (CFL) in 2010. Sales was signed as an undrafted free-agent by the Indianapolis Colts in 2009 and had private workouts with the Seattle Seahawks.

Sales, a four-year letterman and two-year starter at Penn State University - also known as “Linebacker University” for consistently producing top-caliber professional talent at linebacker - started 28 of his 51 games played. He finished his career for Joe Paterno with 154 tackles (82 solo), 10 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Sales was also named Academic All Big Ten in both 2005 and 2006.

Sales earned multiple all-county, All-Western Pennsylvania district and all-conference awards for Coach Garry Cathell at Butler Area HS. A three-year starter, as a senior he made 98 tackles, with 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and returned two interceptions for touchdowns. During his career, he made 265 tackles and had 20 sacks and five interceptions. He was named to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Terrific 25, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fab 22 and the Harrisburg Patriot-News Platinum 33. Sales was team captain, won the YMCA Scholar-Athlete Award and played in the 2004 Big 33 Classic. Sales also starred in track and basketball. He placed third in Pennsylvania in the discus and was an all-section pick on the basketball court, where he scored more than 1,200 points during his career.

SHARKS CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY

The Jacksonville Sharks are celebrating the first anniversary of the franchise. November 18, 2009, the ownership group of the Sharks, comprised of Jeff Bouchy, Larry Payne and Steve Curran, stood at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena with head coach Les Moss and AFL commissioner Jerry Kurz to announce the birth of a new team.

“We are extremely excited to bring the highest level of arena football to the Jacksonville market,“ said Bouchy at the press conference last year. “While the football will be fantastic, fans are going to love the entertainment we bring to them. It is a hybrid of a KISS concert and football game rolled into one that is affordable and fan-friendly.”

The message was received by Jacksonville loud and clear. In the inaugural season, the Sharks won a record 12 games as an expansion franchise and captured the South Division championship, arguably the toughest in the Arena Football League, and earned home field advantage for a playoff game. The Sharks were near the top in the league in attendance, creating possibly the loudest arena, selling out three games. The Sharks were featured as the AFL Game of the Week six times on the NFL Network and had five additional games broadcast locally on WCWJ, CW17.

Les Moss told Jacksonville “we are going to bring fast-paced, high-scoring, hard-hitting arena football action to the Jacksonville area fans. We will have the top talent in Arena Football playing right here in Jacksonville.” He delivered on his promise. Signing several veteran players, including quarterback and AFL legend Aaron Garcia, the Sharks won seven of their eight regular season home games on Sea Best Field, a mark unbested by any other team in 2010.

Finatics, a term used to describe the Sharks faithful, saw record breaking action in their first season. Aaron Garcia set the new standard for quarterbacks breaking both the all-time passing yardage record (45,086 and counting) and the passing touchdown record (962 and counting). Garcia also finished the 2010 campaign third all-time in passing completions (3,582) and passing attempts (5,685). He also reached the top 20 all-time in rushing attempts (220) and rushing touchdowns (45).

The fun of a Sharks game is more than just the football. With theme nights like Halloween in July, Military Appreciation and Disco Fever, the Sharks entertained Finatics from the time they took their seat until they left the post-game autograph sessions. 2011 will feature the same great themed atmosphere and continue to offer great discounts for appreciation nights.

“It’s an honor to have the Jacksonville Sharks back for the 2011 season,” said AFL Commissioner Jerry Kurz. “During the team’s inaugural year in 2010, the Sharks proved they were devoted, not only to winning, but the entire Jacksonville community.”

The Sharks are continuing the momentum from the 2010 season. With training camp starting in late February, the Sharks have re-signed eight players from 2010, and several other AFL veterans. One of those veterans, Jeff Hughley, has already been productive in Jacksonville. As a Tulsa Talon last season, Hughley scored five touchdowns (four receiving, one special teams) against the Sharks on Sea Best Field. The Sharks have signed 14 AFL rookies, many with previous indoor experience.

“While we had a fantastic first year,” commented Bouchy. “Our goal for 2011 will be to continue offerring Jacksonville an exciting product for the best value in town. If you did not attend a game during the 2010 season, you missed out on an unbelievable show with lots of exciting and thrilling football. The good news is, we get to do it all over again starting in March, only better. The city has opened it’s arms and hearts to the team as we have already surpassed last year’s season ticket numbers. March cannot arrive fast enough for all of us!”

The Sharks will surely deliver another memorable year offering a family-friendly environment at an affordable price. With an 18-game schedule for 2011, the Sharks are offering season tickets as low as $50 for a 10-game package. The Sharks will also continue promotions like the Coca-Cola Family 4 Pack - a package including four tickets, four hot dogs, four bottles of Coke and four bags of chips for one low price.

Though the Jacksonville Sharks are only beginning the second year as a franchise, they have already established themselves as one of the top franchises in the league.
