Jetsfan80
The benefit of having a talented team is that most of the issues the Jets have are relatively minor compared to those across the league. The Steelers have to worry about Byron Leftwich being their starting QB for at least 4 games and perhaps more. The Panthers have an injured Steve Smith and basically no one behind him for their very young QB's to build chemistry with this offseason. The Redskins are dealing with Albert Haynesworth's fatness. The list goes on. What are your biggest concerns about the Jets right now with training camp underway? Mine: 1. RB Situation: With Joe McKnight failing a conditioning test, LT already getting dinged up and Shonn Greene's questionable durability, we may be on the verge of a big problem. Let's hope Chauncey Washington off the practice squad is any good or we may be hitting the waiver wire sometime this season. 2. Sanchez: Will Mark continue where he left off with his outstanding postseason play, or will he throw more picks than TD's next season? With added weapons Santonio Holmes, LT and Coles in the mix next season, it is imperative that Mark takes a step forward in year 2, which is typically when the training wheels come off for young QB's. Last year, for instance, Matt Ryan was handed Tony Gonzalez but still saw his production decline from his rookie year. How well Schottenheimer puts Sanchez in a position to succeed in our new balanced attack on offense is crucial. 3. Revis: Can the Jets win a Super Bowl without Darrelle Revis? Yes. But as Chris Rock once said, just because you think you can drive a car with your knees doesn't make it a good idea. It's not as simple as saying "just pay the man" with the looming CBA issues, but it also doesn't look like either side is moving close to a deal. Its not particularly worrisome that this has caused a "distraction" for the team, but it IS worrisome to imagine Revis not taking the field come Week 1. 4. Left Guard: The fact that Matt Slauson continues to be in the mix for the LG spot could mean nothing, or it could mean that Vlad Ducasse needs a lot of work before he potentially wins the job. The Jets need their 2nd rounder, who was targetted at # 29 overall before Kyle Wilson fell into the Jets' laps, to win the job convincingly and be ready for 2010. 5. Defensive End: Its no secret that Shaun Ellis is getting long in the tooth. Mike DeVito is a very capable starter, but it would be nice if Vernon Gholston decided to make use of his physical tools and make an impact at DE. The Jets need to be able to win the battles at the point of attack, because if Kris Jenkins goes down again, the weakened Defensive Line could become pretty porous against the run. 6. Kicker/Punter: Nick Folk has good days and bad days in practice and will probably cause a few nervous breakdowns among fans this season. Meanwhile, neither Steve Weatherford nor T.J. Conley are particularly great options. Hopefully the Jets won't have to punt as much this season. 7. Backup QB: With Sanchez coming off knee surgery, its not very comforting knowing that Kellen Clemens and 40-year old Mark Brunnell are the current backups. If Sanchez gets hurt again, the Jets might not have the luxury of playing Tampa Bay when it happens. Even 1 game can make or break the Jets' season in the AFC East. 8. ST Coverage Unit: With the Jets losing gunner Wallace Wright and several other special teamers, there doesn't appear to be much left for Westhoff to work with. And while the Jets' biggest problem may have been the very players the Jets' let go, including Jay Feely on kickoffs, it is unknown how Folk would handle kickoff duties, and who the gunner will be this time around. David Clowney's name has been tossed around, so we'll see. 9. Kris Jenkins: Sione Pouha did a fine job replacing Jenkins last season, but the Jets seemed to be at their most dominant on defense early on in the season before Jenkins went down, especially in the Houston game. Lock the big man in a cage until Week 1 and hope he stays healthy. 10. Weeks 1-4: The Jets play Baltimore followed by all three division opponents in weeks 1-4, without Santonio Holmes available. Going 2-2 to start the year just won't cut it, which puts added pressure on the team, especially since the first two games are in the new stadium. JMJ
My biggest concern is an injury to Antonio Cromartie or Kyle Wilson which is probably exactly what Revis and his camp are quietly rooting for. This would put immense pressure on the Jets to get Revis in camp and make them much more likely to cave to his ridiculous and greedy demands. JMJ
Neither do I. It is obvious they want Revis there just like all of us do. But an injury to either of those guys makes it more likely Revis gets more money when he finally does sign than he would otherwise, thus muddying our cap situation for years to come. If you don't think Revis and Schwartz will do a little fist pump if they get the news that Cromartie or Wilson injured their knee than you are kidding yourself. MadBacker Prime
I have a hangover, at my ripe old age I should not have a hangover on a Tuesday. That really concerns me. With the Jets, I am concerned about Shonn staying healthy and that's about it. I'm confident in our team with our without Revis.
slats
My #1 concern is easily Mark Sanchez and the passing game. Last year the Jets had the league's #31 passing attack, threw the ball less than any other team and Sanchez only completed 54% of his throws. All of those numbers have to come up considerably this year. They need to have a balanced offense, and Sanchez has to start hitting on at least 60% of his passes. There was definitely some good news, though, like Mark's 6.7 ypa -a very respectable number for a rookie- and Mark's poise down the stretch. Now they have to build on that. I'd spend a ton of time on the two minute drill. That's the difference between winning and losing many games in the NFL, and I had absolutely no faith whatsoever in the Jets offense in that situation last year. They need to be able to move the ball down the field in a hurry when it counts, and score TD's when they do. I believe something will get done with Revis, but that's a concern until it does. People can hate on the team's best player all they want, but the Jets defense is nowhere near the same without Revis out on the field. The sooner the better, too. Rex said he'd start if he signed the day before the opener, but that's how players get injured. The Jets were the #1 defense in the league last year based on the strength of them being the #1 defense against the pass last year. They were only #8 against the run. Really, everything else is minor concerns. The LG, PK, and P spots will all work themselves out. Westoff will field coverage teams. The Jets will run the football. The NFL is a passing league. Has been for a long time. It's all about throwing the ball on offense, and stopping the other team from throwing the ball on defense. The Jets get those settled, and they're in very good shape. Just takes a contract on the defensive side. Offense is going to be a little more of an uphill climb.

After all the arguing you've done with me this offseason about our RB core...Me being negative, you being positive, you come out and list this as your #1 concern? Ih8u. You've wasted an awful lot of my time. RB is definitely the biggest concern. If Greene isnt the real deal, we are F'd IMO because LT sucks and McKnight isnt cut out for the NFL. Sanchez is obviously the biggest piece of the puzzle, but I'm not necessarily concerned about him because we won despite him last year and I cant possibly see how he's going to be worse. That would be tough. Special Teams is a concern. Our kickers sucks and who's going to replace Wallace Wright? Left Guard would be next. But I think they will have the benefit of playing next to the model citizen all around badass Mangold and the studly Brick. They should be fine. Mevi$ means nothing to me, we can win without him. 1-4 means nothing to me, we just picked up Coles. Kris is the man, he'll be fine and we played great without him. DE we will be fine. I dont give a rats a$$ about our Back up QB.

Ih8u. You've wasted an awful lot of my time. That was always the goal. No, but seriously. You can't ever have enough backs, and while I still argue that the Jets did the right thing in bringing in LT and replacing Leon, I'm hoping McKnight is ready to go. We picked a bad offseason to be in need of RB help, seeing as the only RB worth a damn in the draft was taken 15 picks before us, and our only option for a veteran RB that wasn't a UFA was LT himself. We did what we could with the chips we were handed, but now the concern is health.

TJ at the least stays healthy...both die toward the end of the season, but I do like that LT gives the option out of the backfield. I just hate whinny little bitch. I dont see McKnight being a viable option in the NFL. Thats just me. I really like Best and thought he'd be perfect for this system with Greene. He was available but I think CB was a bigger need and Wilson was a great selection at that spot. I think they were looking for something similar in McKnight, but he's just not the guy IMO. Hopefully, Greene wasnt a flash in the pan and doesnt have health concerns and all of this doesnt matter.

Sperm Edwards
Weren't people saying, mid-season, that Greene was a wasted draft pick? Now it's pre-season for McKnight? He's just a kid. Lots of kids don't take things as seriously as they should the moment school's out and they see (or are about to see) more money they've ever seen before. IF he's lousy in repeated games then I'll worry about him. But in the meantime I see at least 1 of the same people complaining about our draft pick(s) being among those complaining about how we don't have enough "home grown" talent. LG doesn't bother me, or it certainly doesn't bother me after 1 day of camp. It was announced there would be a competition. So after 1 day of practice to even bring up that the competition will last at least into day 2 is hardly reason for any concern - or even worth mentioning. Also I noticed that the only 2 options/concerns for Ducasse not winning the job seem to be: (1) Ducasse sucks because he's too raw (2) Ducasse sucks because he's going to be a bust. I think Ducasse will end up winning the job but it is hardly inconceivable that Slauson might actually be good and that ends up being the reason the LG competition drags out or Ducasse outright loses it. Sanchez is the #1 concern. If he slumps worse than last year, or if he's still reckless enough running out of the pocket that we're in the hands of our questionable backups, it won't matter whether or not Revis holds out. This team could make the playoffs without Revis. Unless the stars magically align like in 2009, they won't without an improved Sanchez. P/K excluded, the rest of these concerns are no greater than those any playoff team has. You could point to ANY contender and say, "If ____ gets hurt then we're in trouble" for a handful of starters. #27TheDominator
Not only don't I think that RB is a concern, but I think it's a strength. Sure I'd be worried if Greene went down, but I wouldn't be happy going into the season with only Thomas Jones either. I'm fine with LT carrying the load for a few games if necessary. If any starters get hurt it's a concern. I think depth at tackle is way more of a concern, both in general and for the running game. I have more faith in LT and McKnight than I do in Wayne Hunter. Mandarinia
Here are my concerns regarding the Jets 2010 season. 1. Sanchez -- Sophomore Slump? Better decision making, better pass completion percentage. 2. RB Depth -- Is LT done? Greene staying healthy. 3. 4th Quarters -- Finishing the game on both sides of the ball. 4. Off the field issues -- Braylon, Cro, Holmes, etc. 5. Should I spend the money to go to the Superbowl this year -- Jets will be there.
Fifth Amendment
1. Sanchez. With only one quality RB, the Jets wont be able to run the ball 60% of the time (36.3 times/g) without losing Greene to injury/wear and tear. Compounding the issue is that Jets' opponents will no doubt crowd the LOS and try to force MS to throw. MS will need to carry the offense at times this year, a burden he didn't have to deal with last year. If he's able to handle it, the Jets should thrive. IF. 2. RB. Piggybacking off of #1, Greene will have to not only stay healthy, he'll have to stay fresh. Meaning no more than 18-22 carries per game thru the season. The Jets dont have any back ups who can get the job done in his absence, so it'll fall to the passing game, see #1. 3. DL/OL Depth. Simply, its not very good. The Jets OL is one of the best in the NFL, but there's not much behind it should an injury occur. Defensively, Pouha showed he is a capable back up last year, good insurance if Jenkins goes down. But Shaun Ellis and Mike Devito must stay healthy b/c there's not much behind them either. I'm not buying Gholston as a 5 tech DE. IF injuries do crop up, look for more 4-3 looks, thats a role where Gholston's talents will be more useful. 4. Revis. Not much explanation needed. DR allows Rex a tremendous amount of flexibility with his ability to cover #1 WRs without safety help. Losing him is obviously a major loss, but I rank it 4th because I seriously doubt Revis misses any regular season games. 5. Schedule. Baltimore, NE, MIA is a tough way to start the season, especially in a media market like NY. The Jets performed better as underdogs all of last year, and seemed to falter whenever expectations began to creep up. How they will handle the lofty expectations that have been placed on them remains to be seen, but suffice to say they enter 2010 with a target on their chest vs. a slew of teams that are very capable of pulling off an upset.
