slats
Broncos’ Bailey: Revis is best corner, right to hold out Jets BlogPOST STAFF REPORT Last Updated: 1:24 PM, August 8, 2010 Posted: 12:47 PM, August 8, 2010 The Champ has passed on his title. Champ Bailey has long been considered the best cornerback in football, but he has admitted that Darrelle Revis has surpassed him. "I was reluctant to give it to anybody because I thought I was the best," the Broncos corner said of Revis on 104.3 the Fan in Denver. "I watched every game he played last year and I've got to give it to him. He's better than anyone right now." And “right now” Revis is nowhere to be seen, a hold out with the Jets. That hasn’t stopped head coach Rex Ryan from signing buses with predictions of a Super Bowl title and him from saying the defense would still be dominant without Revis. Bailey disagrees. “If the Jets want to do anything they better get this boy in camp,” the 11-year veteran said. Revis is seeking to become the highest-paid corner in the game, but is scheduled to make $1 million this season and $10 million each over the final two years of his contract. "If I was making what he's making, I'd probably do the same thing," Bailey said. "I was fortunate enough to play with Deion Sanders," Bailey said. "As a great corner you want to see who's next. They tried to give it to Nnamdi (Asomugha), and I really wasn't sold on it. But I was watching Revis when he played Brandon Marshall a couple years ago, and I was like, 'This kid can play.' Ty Law came up to me, he was on the team, and he said, 'This kid is the real deal.' And that's when I really started watching him, and he is the real deal." JiFtheOracle
Good for Champ. It takes a big man to say that. Too bad his buddy Brandon Marshall still thinks he's the best....but its all good. Hopefully that punk Mevi$ plays this season and B-Marsh gets to find out first hand. Twice!!!
slats
As Revis' holdout drags on, Al Davis gets the blame Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 9, 2010 10:08 AM ETWelcome to day nine of the Darrelle Revis holdout. The Jets cornerback has now accumulated $128,000 in fines, although we doubt the team will ever make him pay. Instead, the Jets front office will work furiously to solve a standoff without an easy solution, only easy scapegoats. Behind the scenes, the Jets have continued to peddle the line that it's all Al Davis' fault for the monster contract he gave Nmandi Asomugha in 2009. The New York Daily News' Gary Myers spoke to a sympathetic G.M. that agreed. "In our league, we let one man's stupidity ruin it," the G.M. said. "I would just say, 'I'm not acknowledging it. It's Al Davis. We are not doing that deal. If you want that deal, do what [Asomugha] did to get it. Wait until you become an unrestricted free agent.' " The Jets have handled it this way, saying they won't go along with Davis' market-setting deal. But how far above market is $15 million-per-season? The Broncos are willingly paying Champ Bailey $12.5 million this year on the downside of his career. The better argument is that Revis hasn't hit free agency, so he can't expect to be paid like a free agent. Quietly blaming Al Davis just distracts the Jets' culpability. Al Davis didn't approach Revis' agent just minutes after the Jets season ended, promising to take care of his client. Al Davis didn't call Revis the best defensive player in football day after day, putting Revis on a pedestal that the Jets now can't reach financially. Wouldnt have it any other way. Dont believe the hype...not that you do...but a 9-7 team being SB favorite in a lot of minds out of the AFC is laughable IMO with or without Mevi$. But, whatevs...I think we do have the most talented squad we've had in my era...and that includes the BP years...we just have more talent.
