I was debating whether to write you tonight or Friday to share my experiences with Kelly on the subject. I think Friday is best as there's just some of it you have to feel. Hang tough and keep one little thought in a corner of your mind ..... it isn't ALL a 100% bad thing to have teenage females out of your house except for holidays and the summer - ha ha

Time sure flies. My son was supposed to go away to a big school to play baseball. His grades and test scores got him in a little predicament. Along came the Jr college coaches once the word got out. So this will be delayed for me for now. Wish you luck and strength at this difficult time.

my dad dropped me off. he was so flustered he locked his keys in the car and we had to get campus security to unlock his car :D

I remember an odd feeling after he left that here I am, 8 hours from home, and nobody here knows my name or could care less if I dropped dead.

2 mins later I meet this nerdy looking guy

we've been best friends for 20 years !

she'll do great !

Cool...what school if you don't mind me asking?

I'm currently going through the application process...this time next year I'll be in one of California, Michigan, Massachusetts, or upstate New York.

My mom will have a fit. I'm her baby and after this year all 4 of us will be in college.

Well, if you come to school in Massachusetts, you can have Garb watch over you. biggrin.gif Your Mom will have nothing to worry about.

Kill me now, haha. It would be one of MIT or BU if I went to Massachusetts. Those two are on complete opposite sides of the desired schools though.

Go to BU. Then you can join Gainzo, PFSIKH and Me on the Hockey East thread! We could have our own little JN get-together before the Hockey East tourney at the Garden!

You really are a smartty pants!

Upstate NY - Cornell?

Michigan - U of?

Cali - Berkley?

Engineering, eh?

Impressive.

I can only speak of the Mass schools:

DO NOT GO TO BU! THE PLACE BLOWS! OVER-RATED!

Going to MIT will guarantee you a well paying job. You may even meet a nice geek girl who will be guaranteed a well-paying job. Actually - guaranteed a great masters program wherever you decide to go.

You're two for three there. Cali's got Stanford and Harvey Mudd, New York's also got Rensselaer and Buffalo. I forgot about Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh though. And...that's my list! haha

If I get into MIT I'm definitely going there...

I have been to all 4 places and Cali wins every time.

War-

You should really look into Cal Poly- San Luis Obispo. Go there right now, not an engineer, but its engineering undergrad is one of the top rated undergrad degrees in the nation. Its a public school too so the tuition is reasonable. And I've been to a lot of Cali campuses and we definitely have the best looking girls. If thats your thing ;)

Know people that go to Harvey Mudd- overrated. Stanford is badass though.

I've looked at it, but I don't think I'll apply there. I don't want to end up in the Cal public system as an out-of-stater with all the budget cuts etc. I don't think it's a fit for other reasons though, especially as I narrowed my list down. Everything I've heard of Harvey Mudd and Cal Poly have been great, but what can you do?

I went to a state school for undergrad, so I didn't have any debt. Now I think it's more expensive though. Only the top schools are worth going to imo now, MIT, Stanford are definitely top. NYU not so much. I didn't realize at the time how important the name of the school was, since I went to a top NYC HS and it didn't help me in any way. But college is really name driven.

My little sister just went off to college yesterday to....Buffalo. It's a state school and the debt load will be low, but I think she made a bad decision. She had a full scholarship at a private in NYC, and though it wasn't ranked well, that's still a free ride and I thought she should have kept it.

The economic climate is really bad now and it's actually even tough for grads from top schools. Going to a non-top is just a bad idea right now unless you've got the connections already in place. You can say you'll work hard and do well, but that's everyone's plan too, so there's no guarantee. I know a LOT of recent grads that are unemployed or underemployed from a lot of different schools at different levels of education. I'd usually have someone ask me to hire them when I'd pass out a business card. Now I just pass out less of them.

I can relate to the HS part of the first paragraph...I have yet to see its benefits. But I think Buffalo can be a good choice, especially in certain programs. I don't know the private school but ~20k a year could be worth it if the Buffalo program is excellent. I don't know the situation though I wouldn't mind Buffalo's engineering, even if it's my safety.
