yankees2022
Source: Darrelle Revis, Jets Still Talking Contract as Clock Ticks 0 Comments Say Something » 8/31/2010 3:55 PM ET By Dan Graziano PrintAText Size Dan Graziano Senior NFL Writer With just 13 days left before their regular-season opener, the New York Jets and the agents for cornerback Darrelle Revis are quietly continuing negotiations on a new contract. A week after a source told FanHouse the sides were "almost there," the same source relayed to FanHouse on Tuesday that the talks are complicated but still progressing, and that both sides believe they will have a deal done before the Jets open the season on Monday, Sept. 13 against the Ravens. Revis has been spending his time in Pittsburgh, working out and training on his own so that once the deal is done, he'll be ready to jump right in -- despite missing all of training camp and, so far, the entire preseason. In the meantime, while observing a mutually agreed-upon media blackout, the team and the agents have been working on the details of a complex deal intended to satisfy Revis' desire to be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. It's unclear what the deal will eventually look like, but sources tell FanHouse that they believe it will have to set some sort of record in order to reflect Revis' belief, and the team's corresponding assertions, that he is the league's best cornerback. That could mean a deal that pays Revis more per year than the $15.1 million Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha makes, though the Jets have balked at that in the past on the belief that Asomugha's deal is not reflective of where the top of the market should be. So potential compromises could include a deal that's the longest ever given to a corner, or the most in terms of total value, etc. The details are complicated because there's much to be ironed out in terms of guaranteed money and how the deal is to be structured around a potential 2011 lockout, but conversations are ongoing, and it does appear likely that the situation will get settled in time for the regular season. "There are a lot of different possibilities still in play," the source said of the likely final structure of the deal. The Jets continue to observe the media blackout, refusing to discuss the Revis negotiations. But Jets coach Rex Ryan did say Monday that he remains confident the team can still have a great defense even without Revis and linebacker Calvin Pace, who will miss the first few weeks with a foot injury. "We can get it done," Ryan said. "We've proved it all through the years. That's all I know is great defenses. That's what we stand for. It's not about one guy or two guys. Every team is going to go through one or two guys you're going to miss. That happened last year. When we opened the season, we never had Calvin and we never had Shaun Ellis. Last year, we lost [Kris] Jenkins for a lot of it. This is what we do. We're a team defense. That's why I know our defense will play great. There's not a question in my mind that we'll play great." Ryan talks tough, and he means and believes what he says. But there's no doubt he'll feel better once Revis is signed.

I love to hear how he is going to be ready to jump right in because he is working out. Reports have him working out with an Alquippa personal trainer who was a H.S. football player and running around the track. It's possible he's seriously working out, or he could be working out with a guy like me.

Gholston got a $4.35M raise this year in an effort to make it more cap-friendly to cut him prior to next season (should the Jets decide to do that). Too bad they didn't cut him before the year. Yeah, I'm sure if we weren't locked into his guaranteed contract, the Jets' first choice for a backup DE/OLB at over $6M this season would still be Vernon Gholston. And "give up" is a funny way of making it look like he took one for the team given how much he got paid the first 2 years and how much the Jets got out of him. It is in my interest as a Jets fan for the guy to step it up big-time. Unfortunately, still to this very day, he blows. If he was taken later in the draft he'd already have been cut and the millions that went to him would have gone towards someone far more productive. All that aside, the question was how much did we save THIS YEAR on Gholston. The average is zero, since he got a $4M+ raise this year.

Sperm Edwards
Until the Jets recognize this level of talent and pay accordingly, I dont see a change. And an offer of over $12M per season with $40M guaranteed against injury, to someone already under contract for a totally non-guaranteed $6M over the next 2, isn't recognizing this? I think what you mean to say is you think the Jets need to act accordingly towards any demands Revis has set forth that he - objectively and in no way acting in his own self-interest - believes the Jets should pay, and ignore everything else. bitonti
You said the exact same thing about DFat, how'd that turn out? tex i dont know if you've been paying attn to Jets football but Gholston has arrived. as for Drob all told... not horrible. He started 80+ games for the NYJ, started as a rookie, played well in several playoff seasons and eventually wore out his knee. It happens. Not as bad a bust as Jon Sullivan who went at 6 in that draft and was out of the league in 2 years, not as great a pick as Kevin Williams who went at 8 and was a pro bowler. In the grand scheme of things he was mediocre. I also remember defending Bryan Thomas, where would the Jets be without that player right now? But was he worth two 1st's and a 4th? Gholston is still a joke. Jets spent the overall #6 pick on a pure pass rusher and the guy doesn't have ONE sack, including preseason games. The guy is a total bust. BTW, Bryan Thomas (along with Brandon Moore) is the most under rated player on Jets message boards.

Someone asked a question and I answered it. I don't understand what you're arguing with me about; I wasn't advocating cutting Gholston even though he's been a terrible bust so far, only seeing the field due to (1) the injury of another, and (2) unwarranted promotion due to his original draft status. I hope you're right about Gholston, though I would have to categorize myself as pessimistic since he still pretty much looks lousy on defense. Anyone who wanted him cut this year wasn't being realistic. Cap or no cap, unless he's misbehaving no one cuts a #6 overall pick prior to year 3 when he's getting paid as much as Gholston is. You may say it doesn't matter what we pay him because it's an uncapped year. It does matter. Money is money. Even a billionaire like Woody, whose main accomplishment in life was being born, values the $10M of guaranteed money Woody would have to have paid Gholston for the privilege of cutting him early. I don't always agree with Bit, but Gholston appears to be rejuvenated by being moved back to DE this year and he has looked pretty sharp quite honestly Mike. Rex Ryan made a mistake trying him at OLBer for 2 seasons, that did more harm then good IMHO. Should have left him at DE.
