Leigh Bodden placed on IR and other Patriots moves

FOXBOROUGH -- The New England Patriots made their roster moves today and there was a surprise among the bunch.

Cornerback Leigh Bodden was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Bodden has battled a knee injury throughout the preseason but managed to play in his first game against the St. Louis Rams last week. But the Patriots have said that Bodden's injury is shoulder related.

The Patriots also placed defensive lineman Darryl Richard (foot), safety Bret Lockett (chest) and safety Josh Barrett (shoulder) on injured reserve. They released cornerback Terrence Johnson to drop the roster from 80 to 75 players.

More to come about Bodden ...

I was happy when we drafted McCourty. This certainly does nothing to change THAT.

Ha, Honestly, I wanted McCourty....but Wilson has looked sharp and he is completely different than who I thought he was after seeing him on HardKnocks.

Bodden hurts. He played well for you last year. So does White start in his place or McCourty?

You mean Wilhite?

Most likely I see it like this.....

Butler - Starter

McCourty - Starter

Wilhite - Nickel

Wheatley - Dime

Arrington -Backup/ST

Of course with BB it will rotate a lot.

Not exactly the strongest CB depth chart in the NFL.

Patriots once again are going to rely more on Brady and Co to score points as opposed to the defense shutting down the other teams offense. Pretty much the opposite of the Jets approach.

Wilhite...yes.

Yeah, not spectacular, but Butler can play...he's pretty versatile. Its probably good news that McCourty is above Wilhite.

The approach is definitely different, but every team doesnt have a Brady at the helm.

the loss of bodden is made easier by mccourty. he's a very solid player too... he and wilson have different skill sets. Mccourty is more likely to make a pick or help on special teams. Wilson is stronger, faster and better in man coverage.

Mcourty is faster. He had a faster 40 time and you should see him return KO's.

McCourty is very solid, I expect him to be an outstanding cornerback next year or the following. This year I expect him to get burned from time to time by experienced wr/qb combos. There is almost no experience in the secondary. When the Patriots are facing Sanchez or Henne I am not so worried about that. When the opposing QB is Peyton that could be a serious issue.

Bodden was a good, physical corner. Not a shut down corner - but a good one. The rest? Butler is a work in progress. McCourtey is a rookie and if the last pre-season game is any indication - he has a long way to go. Wilhite and Wheatley are made of glass. Arrington could suprise - he can tackle and hit for sure - not sure he can cover though...LOL!

The Pats secondary was shaky. Now it's scary - and not the good kind of scary. It would be okay - MAYBE - if they had a pass rush...but they don't have that either. The Pats will have to score 40+ points a game in order to win games this year.

Or Sam Bradford...

they are both in the 4.4 area... fast enough. Kyle was 4.39 on some watches.

I actually saw both players at Senior Bowl, before they were affiliated with an NFL team and thought Kyle was the faster player, take it fwiw.
