Rex: ‘We Have a Good Plan’ for Darrelle

Posted by Randy Lange on September 7, 2010 – 7:09 pm

Darrelle Revis returned to work and it was like just another day at the green office.

Well, almost like another day. Except for No. 24 getting some special 1-on-1 tutelage from secondary coach Dennis Thurman.

“I know Dennis took him over today to get some more air time— I mean to work with Darrelle a little bit,” head coach Rex Ryan said, throwing in his sly allusion to the “Hard Knocks” cameras, which filmed their last Jets footage of the year today. “They were using the tackling machine just to get him going a little bit. He’ll work out with Sal [Alosi, head strength coach] tomorrow a little bit in the weightroom. We’re confident we have a good plan for him. We’ll see where he’s at.”

And except for a rare dropped theft.

“I dropped a pick,” he said at his locker for the first time after a practice since the end of the June full-squad minicamp. “I bobbled it, it hit me in my helmet and I was looking for it and couldn’t find it. But I got a couple of PDs today and it felt good to get my hands on the ball.”

“He was all over the place — he was Darrelle,” said Ryan. “An amazing guy, just coming in and out of breaks, fast, quick, change of direction, all that kind of stuff. … It’s sprints, one sprint after another sprint. He is in great shape. Just about where he can set his pads, maybe that’s the thing we have to overcome a little bit.”

So Revis in practice has picked up where he left off before his stay away from training camp and the preseason games. Now the next question won’t be how he’ll hold up on the final three practices this week, from Thursday through Saturday, but how he’ll hold up against Baltimore in the Monday night season opener.

“I think the Ravens will” come after him, Revis said, “because I haven’t been in camp, I haven’t been playing football for a while. I’m sure that’s in their game plan. They might mix a couple of receivers in there. First down they may have Anquan [boldin] or somebody else in to run a go on my side if they get me a little bit tired.”

But throwing at Revis last year was a losing proposition. Ryan said he heard that only two other corners had more passes thrown their way than Darrelle had his way, and unofficially Revis’ 34 PDs not only led the NFL but marked the first time since 1993 that any NFL player had at least 30 in a season.

Ryan also heard something from Ravens fullback Le’Ron McClain that brought out the competitor in the Jets head coach.

“I understand Le’Ron said he’s happy Darrelle’s playing. I don’t know what’s wrong with Le’Ron,” Rex jested about the player who used to play fullback when he was the Ravens’ D-coordinator. “He said something about there’s no excuses, we won’t have any excuses if they beat us. He must have us confused with somebody else. We don’t make excuses. Last year we didn’t have our starting 11 on defense for any one game but we led the league in defense. We don’t make excuses. We produce. That’s what we plan on doing Monday night.”

Revis, needless to say, included.

Jets’ Photo Op

Before practice, the team got together on steep, narrow bleachers to get their team photo taken in front of the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Before the shutters clicked, though, there was the usual byplay. Someone, Antonio Cromartie, perhaps, had stolen Bart Scott’s No. 57 jersey. So Scott came out wearing a gray T-shirt and looking around for the culprit. Cromartie flipped it to him after an appropriate wait.

In the photo on the centerpiece for this story, you can see the Jets’ secondary getting on Brodney Pool. That’s Kyle Wilson pointing to the left, Darrelle Revis to the right, Jim Leonhard from the second row. Not sure what Brodney’s sin was.

Finally, Woody Johnson, Rex Ryan, Mike Tannenbaum, all the coaches, trainers, doctors, scouts, front-office folks, and players — including LB Calvin Pace and DE Ropati Pitoitua, who set aside their crutches for the occasion — sat still and said cheese for brothers Larry and Mike Bashore, who make up the VSN Photography team that has taken the Jets team photo every year since 2003.

And that included DE Shaun Ellis, who may look as if he’s 6’7″ instead of 6’5″ because every time the Bashores took a shot, the Big Katt got up on his tiptoes.

In all some 127 players occupied the eight levels of the bleachers, with a ninth level seated in front.

I still dont understand how this guy wasnt the DPOTY last year.

U know & I know Revis put up one of the greatest seasons ever for a CB.

But, it's a stats driven award and Woodson had bigger stats across the board.

I am a Michigan fan and root for the guy but Revis showed in regular season and especially in the playoffs why he is the best Corner in the NFL.

While Woodson was absolutely destroyed in the playoffs.
