Exile on Main Street

One of my favorite albums of all time was re-released earlier this year and entered at #1 and #2 on the UK and US charts, respectively, nearly 38 years to the day since it's original release. Simply amazing.

I just was curious as to how many posters here actually have the album (in any form) as well as their favorite song off of it. I've also always found it fascinating to listen to those who grew up with the album in the 70s and how their initial reaction to the album has changed over the years.

*Shine a light to me is not only one of the best Stone songs, but the best off this album. A rock-gospel song, which brings one of my favorite artists ever in Billy Preston to the table, just shows off Jagger's raw vocals and lyrics. Originally titled "Get a line on you," this song had been through a lot.

Should have started this thread a while back when they got #1 in the UK charts. Such an amazing piece of work. Love so many songs, Tumbling Dice, Happy, Shine A Light, Let It Loose. Just ******* LOVE that album.

Favorite ever, great job for the thread on it, A true masterpiece.

I really enjoyed the re-issue from earlier this year. The bonus disc had some interesting stuff on it, the alternate Soul Survivor with Richards singing...etc.

My two favorites would be Just Want to See His Face, which is incredible with a good pair of headphones; and Stop Breaking Down, which is the Stones at their best. Richards is brilliant on that track.

It really is just an absolutely brilliant album and I really have been digging the alternate version of Loving Cup they released, just amazing. Just the vast styles of music they touched on here, from true blues to straight forward rock n roll to country and a funky blues rock, I just can't speak highly enough about it. It showed a lot of maturity and growing from Sticky Fingers...speaking of which, as a fellow Stones fan, you've gotta check out this Wild Horses video.

Not anyone that I've talked to can tell me whether they think it was Keef and Gram Parsons or Mick and Mick. Regardless, still a pretty cool insight into where they were and their mindset back in those days.

Good call Joe- my first couple hundred plays of Exile came off of double 8 track tapes. Lousy technology - but the only way you could play it in your car at the time. Put many miles on the 69 GTO Judge cranking Exile on the ( probably 25 watt) 8 track stereo.
