Ray Lucas is a good guy. I met him when he played at Rutgers and for the NYJETS. Get Well Soon Ray. This is a quote from the story that I have seen and heard alot of times from retired players. " Lucas says he sought assistance from organizations that aid retired players, but became increasingly bitter when they told him there was nothing they could do for him. Many former players say the NFL's disability and retirement plan, which is run jointly by the league and the union, is designed not to assist players debilitated by injuries suffered during their careers, but to stonewall them. It's almost impossible, some say, to even get union officials to simply return a phone call " I am glad Ray is getting the help he needs. He is one of my favorites on Jets Postgame. THE ILK
He's getting neck surgery, and won't be on SNY for a while. I like Ray, and wish him the best, a speedy recovery and a pain free future!

Honestly, fixing this system is something I think both the owners and player's union need to make a priority as part of the new CBA. I'm not one to ever feel too bad for the players who are out there making millions upon millions playing a game, and if you are one of those guys and just too stupid to save any of it, then that's your problem. But that's not the case for a lot of these guys and especially not the older guys who have been out of the league for years and weren't making even a fraction of what the players today do. Given the physical toll that is taken on these guys, something needs to made a priority by both sides. It's not like they don't all have enough money to pull it off and still be rich. bitonti
there are a million stories like ray lucas. It's sad but not exceptional. The more I learn about the NFL the less I love this game. whats even more disturbing is the Penn lineman who hung himself for no apparent reason. He was 20 and never had an official concussion. When they did the autopsy he had the same CTE degeneration that they found in Mike Webster and many others. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1312256/Suicide-American-football-player-brain-disease-linked-repeated-head-trauma.html enjoy the game now cause it's gonna drastically change... or go the way of boxing. and before you ask no a better helmet will not solve the problem. the problem is the game itself.
