Jets strongly consider deactivating Braylon Edwards on Sunday

According to Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, the arrest of Edwards for DWI at 5:15 a.m. on the West Side of Manhattan has so infuriated Rex Ryan, according to sources inside the Jets training facility, the team is strongly considering deactivating the trouble-prone receiver for the game.

Sources told The Post the Jets, who are highly image-conscious and intent on making a strong and swift statement, were speaking to NFL officials today to explore disciplinary options the team could take, including potentially deactivating Edwards for Sunday’s game.

If the Jets want to suspend Edwards without pay for a game, that could be complicated by resistance from the NFL Players Association, which would undoubtedly fight that action -- with Edwards’ blessing -- because Edwards has not been convicted of the crime.

If the Jets deactivate him, that would seem to be their prerogative based on making a personnel decision and likely would leave the NFLPA no grounds for appeal.

Not surprised one bit, with all the bad light being shed on the Jets, they are going to do something.

Sucks that this fool had to jump to the front of the line!

I hope they just fine his a$$, Cro has 2 picks and he may want to be the highest paid CB next year.

They'll hit him with a very hefty fine. Rex will chew his a$$ out and they will move on.

I remember how greatful he was coming here and escaping Cle. Now he's going to tarnish his rep here? Rex loves his players and trusts them. For him to beget his trust must just royally piss Rex off beyond belief.

I'd be surprised.. this seems like a purposeful leak for PR

+1

Scream and yell all week about it, and then be consilatory on Sunday and let him play.

BTW, Cannizzarro is off in the article. Disciplinary deactivations for substance abuse violations aren't permitted under the CBA either. NFLPA can challenge that as well.

I hope the Jets don't overreact to the "loose ship" hyperbole and do something rash here. Fine him and let's move on, we need to win football games not make a move to please the outside world. Suspend him after the legal process has run it's course(and Santonio returns).

I can understand Rex Ryan and the entire organization being upset right now.

But hope cooler heads prevail.

The best way to go about this is to not start him for this game on the first play or at worst keep him out of the first series of offense.

Anything beyond that is just plain and pure overreaction!

I agree with that. I also agree that this sounds like PR more than anything else.

Primetime against the fish for first place this week... passing offense just got untracked against NE... and you're going to bench Braylon?

Some quiet, in house discipline is more in order. Letting the league handle a league matter is the best way to go about it.

I don't care about the opponent this week

rex needs to lay down the law, this frat house thing is going to cost this team dearly if it keeps up

I say make a strong example of him and do whatever is allowed by the NFL

we don't need anymore BS distractions

I guarantee you woody rex and tanny are super pissed, and they should be

You can't suspend him because the NFLPA will come out and challenge it. Deactivating him is a stupid move also since you are still on the hook for the money and you just shoot yourself in the foot. Let the progress work out. You knew what you were getting into when trading for him. This is why we got him on the cheap. So don't be surprised when he does something stupid. I want him on the field this Sunday. The Jets organization is hated by the rest of the league/fanbases anyways. This is not going to hurt our image anymore than anything else has. I wanna beat Miami, win this division, win the Super Bowl and after that you do not resign him. He cost himself a contract with this, but lets not cost this season in which we went all in for.

Well if they deactivate Edwards they should also deactivate D-brick and the Ghost for contributing to the delinquency of a moron

Why? Ghost and Ferguson were responsibly enough NOT to drive. You can't put the blame on them. They were not the one who were DRIVING while being intoxicated. Not fair at all.
