NIGHT STALKER
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/2010/09/22/2010-09-22_jet_chemistry_quick_to_blow.html Gary Meyers, New York Daily News It's the phone call every team lives in fear of receiving, but the Jets increased the odds of the early-morning wakeup by cutting corners on character as they constructed their roster in a desperate attempt to sell PSLs and end their 41-year Super Bowl drought. Just two weeks into the season and the Jets are paying big-time for overplaying the risk-reward ratio trying to get to Dallas in February. That's what happens when you believe your coach is a Pied Piper and are convinced your infrastructure of player programs is strong enough to withstand the pressure put on it by some of the NFL's true knuckleheads. And then Braylon Edwards gets behind the wheel and tests for twice the legal blood alcohol limit after choosing not to take advantage of the team's Player Protect program to ask for a ride home. Edwards met Tuesday night with Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum and was remorseful. There was no telling which Jet would screw up first or how he would screw up. But is it really any surprise the Jets' grand chemistry experiment has already blown up with Edwards getting arrested for DWI near the Lincoln Tunnel Tuesday morning at 5:13? The Jets traded for Edwards last year and signed him to a one-year, $6.05 million tender this year. If Woody Johnson really wanted to send a message to his players and fans that the organization has zero tolerance for dangerous and stupid behavior, he would cut Edwards right now and fight any challenge from the NFL Players Association. But the Jets are limited in what they can do because any discipline must be handed down by the league under the substance-abuse policy. Tannenbaum said Tuesday night that Edwards will dress for Sunday night's game in Miami and play. He will not start. That's as far as the Jets can go handing out their own punishment without facing a challenge from the union. It's ludicrous that the punishment guidelines are so strict that the Jets can't deactivate Edwards or simply let him dress but not play without potentially facing a fight from the union. What kind of message is that sending to Edwards? Then again, if the Jets wanted to make a stand that character counts, they never would have traded for Edwards last season a few days after he was accused of punching LeBron James' friend outside a Cleveland nightclub. Do you think the Steelers ever would have traded Santonio Holmes one year after he was Super Bowl MVP if they weren't fed up after finding out he would be suspended the first four games this season for violating the substance abuse policy? Not to worry. Ryan wanted him.

Klecko73isGod
Gary Myers is a megadouche. One of my favorite moments on Hard Knocks was when he asked Rex about the Jets giving him a contract extension when they were having a tough time signing Revis and Rex made his comment about making a deal with Revis that he would give Revis his contract if he could have Revis' signing bonus. Myers was thinking he was outsmarting Rex with what basically amounts to a complete bullsh*t question as everyone knows that Rex ain't getting paid close to what Revis was asking for and Rex just made him look like an idiot for asking the question with his answer. I honestly don't know if I would have handled it as cool as Rex did. I probably would have gone the Parcells rout and flat out called Myers an idiot for asking a moronic question. HessStation
Heres another reporter hammering the entire organization from the Star-Ledger. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/09/dalessandro_braylon_edwardss_d.html LOL. Holy sh*t. Let it all hang out Dave. This guy clearly is not a Jets fan I guess. You have to wonder what it’s like to have a boss like Woody Johnson. Beyond the swell tax-shelter tips he can provide for you, he is also the kind of fellow who gives employees his tacit approval to drink themselves sloppy the night before work, and then provides free rides home in case they have the good fortune and good sense to misplace their car keys after their blood-alcohol level redlines. And if you’re Braylon Edwards and you are dumb enough to decline this magnanimous offer — it’s actually legit, existing under the “Player Protect” rubric that many owners provide around the NFL — this is what you get: a free ride of another kind, while putting your team through another week of stupid. So here we go again. You can hang the opprobrium on everyone involved here, from the owner on down, but this apparently is the way it is with the Jets nowadays. What do they like to say as they pound their chests on HBO? Play like a Jet. On your off-day, drink like a Jet and drive like a Jet. You only have to endure one of those insipid episodes of “Hard Knocks” — with its martial music and earnest-sounding narration — to know that this season is already a study in hubris. Between Sundays, we get to watch football through a Hollywood prism, where it’s more showbiz than documentary, and the Jets have become a parody of themselves like “Animal House” was a parody of a frat house. Only one was funny. Originally, we figured this was a group of attention-starved self-promoters with a narcissism complex, but once the owner gives you the green light to spill your business on television week after week, it becomes more than that. It’s life in the spotlight, and anything goes, and after a while the old rules don’t apply. On the one hand, you appreciate their transparency and candidness and passion, as they follow the lead of a coach who bounces around like a barking mastiff on amphetamines. On the other hand, you can see why it’s devolved into the harassment of female reporters, questionable character guys despoiling a roster filled with mostly good kids, and yes, a DWI. And now, this team has just jumped the shark. In a league that has a really weird vibe right now following Kenny McKinley’s suicide, it’s up to owners like Woody to get back in control of their game. Our guess: They won’t even try. By most accounts, Edwards is a good guy, and not exactly the reprobate that most of us in the media will make him out to be in the next few days. He is compassionate and moralistic, and works very well with kids, we’re told. But somewhere along the way, in his vertiginous, football-addled state, he’s come to believe that he’s indestructible. This is the same kid who was with a Browns teammate, Donté Stallworth, hours before the latter struck and killed a Miami Beach pedestrian while driving under the influence 18 months ago. Talk about living and breathing a 100-yard cautionary tale, and — mind if we mangle a metaphor? — dropping the ball in the end zone. Edwards’ own BAC content was .16 when they pulled him over Tuesday morning. That’s double the legal limit. Behind the wheel, at that level of stupid, he could probably see about as far as Brandon Jacobs can throw a helmet. Jacobs received a $10,000 fine from the league for his act Sunday, but unless Edwards is found guilty of violating his probation from that Cleveland nightclub incident last October, the Jets receiver is subject to no more than a $50,000 fine from the NFL if this is his first violation. He is not subject to a suspension, because the league doesn’t regard this as a violation of its “personal-conduct policy.” How is it that he can endanger the lives of four passengers — and himself — and not be tagged with a suspension? The league will tell you that it’s in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. We’re sure the union lawyers would do a good job of quoting that provision. Here’s our interpretation: In the world of showbiz, they use different scales of justice, based on celebrity, money and the power that goes with it. The Jets should invent their own code of behavior, starting today, and the directive should come from Johnson himself. They’re off to a bad start. Mike Tannenbaum claims the team will impose “the appropriate disciplinary measures,” and a few minutes later said Edwards will play on Sunday against Miami. Fine, if you can’t suspend or deactivate the kid because of the rules — and he doesn’t suspend himself, as a responsible, honorable person should — let him play. Our choice would be for him to line up four times at nose tackle, just to get an idea of the kind of collision his passengers might have experienced Tuesday morning. jussssstme
Here is a much better take on this crap. Based on history, the Jets are below average with bad character players. My take is that Edwards is an idiot, but the Jets themselves are not at fault. Edwards was with Donte Stallworth and one would figure that hard lesson learned would educate him enough to call for a ride. If this was Edwards first scrape, I would be more understanding about the DWI. People make mistakes. I would bet that at least 20% of the people posting have had a DWI and that at least 60% have driven when you probably shouldn't have. Is it wrong, yes. do we still do it, yes. Should we, no. But let's not get holier than thou with the rants reporter people. http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/22/the-lawless-jets-the-numbers-dont-back-it-up/?ref=football The Lawless Jets? The Numbers Don’t Back It Up By KRISTIAN R. DYER New York Jets The Jets made headlines with the signing of Braylon Edwards, Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes — players with troubled pasts. The news that Edwards was arrested early on Tuesday morning in Manhattan on suspicion of drunken driving seemed to confirm for many that the Jets were and are the bad boys of the league. But is that just a feeling or is it based in fact? In November 2008, defensive end Shaun Ellis was arrested in Whippany, N.J., for possession of marijuana. This past spring, after being traded from San Diego, Cromartie avoided a court date by paying off child-support debt, after the Jets fronted him $500,000. Holmes is sitting out the first four games of the season for a substance-abuse violation. The weekend before last, some Jets engaged in what the league called unprofessional conduct with a television reporter from Mexico, with catcalls and rude comments when she was in the locker room. Combine that with Edwards’s arrest, and it looks like a team that is out of control. No excuses for lawlessness and bad behavior, but let’s put it in perspective. Since 2000, according to research on N.F.L. arrests by The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Jets have had eight players arrested, including Edwards on Tuesday morning. Three stemmed from bar fights and three on charges of drunk driving. Over the same stretch, the Jets’ neighbors in the New Meadowlands Stadium, the Giants, have had 11 players arrested, with seven in just the past two years. This is a Giants franchise often hailed as a model team and noted for its character players. Cincinnati has had 32 arrests over the past 10 years, four times the Jets’ number. The league-wide average for arrests is slightly over 16 per team over the past 10 years, so the Jets are at half the average. There is no correlation between winning and having a lower arrest number. Three of the last four franchises to win the Super Bowl — New Orleans (18 arrests ), Indianapolis (18) and Pittsburgh (16, including two arrests of Holmes and another two by former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress before both players were shipped out of town) — all have numbers equal or above the league average over the last 10 years. And all five of the most recent franchises to lift the Lombardi Trophy, adding the Giants and New England to that list, have had higher arrest counts than the Jets. In short, the Jets are not the first and won’t be the last team to make questionable personnel moves in an effort to win.

Biggs
Why? Because you don't want to hear the truth? The truth is while reporters would like to get convictions based on their leaked stories and their ability to sway public opinion, in this country we have something called due process. People aren't convicted nor should they lose their jobs because Police spoksmen or prosecutors leak information that may or may not be correct for their own political advancement. There are facts and than there are facts that are entered into evidence in court and weighed by judge or jury or by plea. The press gets it wrong all the time. Prosecutors and Police leak information for their own self interest all the time. That's why we have procedures to weed out the BS as best we can.
